All right, picture this. You are travelling from A to B in your transport of choice. It's a lovely sunny day, with a slight northeasterly breeze. As you drive/hurtle/float/gallop towards your destination you notice a man further down the road. He's about 6 foot 6, with a new haircut and slightly in need of a shave. He's wearing a pair of jeans, a dark green shirt and a bomber jacket. His right arm hangs by his side. In his right hand is a box containing bottles containing saline solution. His left arm is extended fully. His left hand is in a fist, with only the thumb erect.
What do you do?

And for the pedestrian: do you go thumbing often?

I ride a motorbike. Bit difficult without pinion seat or passenger footrests.

Sorry...I used to hitch-hike a lot, and I appreciate 'most' of the people who gave me rides, but now that I drive around with my daughters, I won't take the chance that someone might hurt them. It's a bad world and it makes me sad, but that's the truth :(

run him over!

not really, I'd probably honk my horn, wolf-whistle and shout something obscene out of the window at him as I drive straight past him

Any self respecting hitchhiker would lower their arm at the sight of a Ford Ka.

I don't pick up hitchhikers. It is not a safe practice.

*Slowly backs away towards the shadows*

*Comic running footsteps can be heard, before the roar of an engine, and squealling tyres peeling away from the thread*

I dont pick up any hitch-hikers. I did stop on the highway a few weeks ago and changed a flat tire for a woman. It was obvious what the problem was and she was standing there looking terribly distressed as her cel phone had no signal. If she didnt have a spare, I would have given her a ride as the parkway is no place to stand and wait for help.
Last week I gave another woman and her son a jump start in a parking lot-the battery was dead, but took a jump.

Neither of these people were hitching and clearly needed help, which was a small effort on my part to correct. I'm leary of hitch hikers though.
I hope if my wife ever needs road side assistance and I'm not there, someone like me will help her out. I would never let her pick up a hitch-hiker either.

well my ride of choice would be an Aston Martin DB9 coupe...

which i could probably get with a metal detector.

so i'd ask him to pass through the metal detector mounted in the passenger door frame

if he passed, i'd give him a ride

hehe
