Are there any Americans here who seriously think the UK head of gov is the Queen?

I was just in the thread about gun control and an American in there stated that the UK was a monarchy and that he couldn't imagine being in a country governed by one family. Seriously! Are there actually people who think the UK is some kind of absolute monarchy?

She does have a certain authority - it is the monarch for example who appoints the PM - but her role is mostly ceremonial.

To my understanding, the monarch in the UK is primarily a figurehead, with the real political power being held by the PM and Parliment. Yes?

I'm under no illusions that the Queen runs the United Kingdom; however, I believe she's the ceremonial head of State while Prime Minister Tony Blair runs the Government. Then again, I could have it mixed up. I know that for all practical purposes, Blair is the country's leader for better or for worse.

Being an American, the role of head of state and head of government in your case are not seperate. Queen Elizabeth II is head of State, the Prime Minister, Tony Blair is head of Government.

I am a Ameriacan but I do know that the United Kingdom is not a full monarchy. A reason to believe that the UK is a monarchy is in its national anthem:

It might be, but then again this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/country_profiles/1038758.stm#leaders) might have something to do with it.

She is the official head of state, but it's a symbolic position these days. Like how for hundreds of years the Emperor was the Japanese head of state, but it was the Shogun who did everything except in England it was a bit more organic and transparent.

Acutally, she has other powers too. She can have people executed still for High Treason and Piracy (as in of the high seas, with eye patches and peg-legs). They still even have an official hangman, but of course she never would exercise that power because then everone would flip and storm Buckingham Palace and step on her dogs or something along those lines...

I haven't really read to many of the post's on this one, but it seems like I learned in school that even tho she does have the power, the Queen in the UK is there pretty much just to carry tradition. If I am wrong then let me know, but as far as I know thats about all she's there for.

Whats to be educated about. You have a royal family who 3/4's of your country idolize and worship. You have a princess who was murdered by the freakin "love of royalty" driven paparazi. It's like a never ending reality show with you guys. Who is Prince Harry going to be seen with next? Will Prince William smoke a joint? You guys actually shut down shop to wait outside some town hall while the "crown prince" who will NEVER rule you gets married. That and you all wear some completly FUGLY looking train wreck type hats. You have orange juice comercials with half naked lesbians and their "bobs". You guys are freaks of nature.

Like I said - just, not directly.

The PM (in theory) relies on her approval for the post.

Effectively (again, in theory) that makes her 'head' of the government by proxy...

But what if she is forced by law to sign the approval?

I live in belgium, and the king - he is a joke - has to approve the prime minister and has to sign every law before it comes law. 10 - 15 years ago i think, our king refused to sign a law because it wasn't 'moral' according to him. He was declared insane for a couple of days and removed from his function during that time ...

That's why I say 'in theory'. I'm sure, if the Queen of England DID decide to take her powers in hand, it would be a fairly short episode, brought to a swift finish through SOME means... be that legal appeal, declaration of insanity, or SAS hit-squad...

She does have a certain authority - it is the monarch for example who appoints the PM - but her role is mostly ceremonial.

She's like a franking machine - the letter won't go in the post till it's been franked, but this is controlled by the post office not the franking machine.

The monarch's role is that of 'supreme ambassador', akin to the role of the Irish president.
