I had a Seiko for the last 25 years. It looks like it may have ticked it last beat today.

Who makes a nice self-winding watch for around $250?

Victorinox makes pretty good watches and they come with a lifetime warranty.

Fossil makes excellent watches, at decent prices as well. I've got two of my own.

Ive had a citizen eco-drive for years that is around that price range, it is solar-powered, very nifty.

Ive been saving up off and on for Tag Heuer, i'm thinking i'll be getting one at last next year.

Anyone have experiences/feelings about Tag watches? I've heard nothing but good things.

I strapped a sun dial to my wrist.

The thing weighs a ton, but it's always on time....unless it's really cloudy...or at night.

Come to think of it, this thing sucks.

I have a very nice Omega self-winding watch. It was my grandfather's, and it is now in its forty-first year (about 35th year of use, since there was a gap between him dying and me acquiring it) and still going very nicely. Having just had a look at the Omega website, I have no idea how much a typical Omega costs - they seem to be curiously reluctant to give any prices. Possibly if one has to ask...

I just looked up Omega watches on google and the average price seems to be about $950.00

Actually I was wrong. They're priced even higher. I must have been looking at the cheapo ones.

It uses a long life battery, but unless you're into the whole "style" thing, I highly recommend the "G-Shock" by Casio. I've worn them for years now and they take one hell of a beating ... water, dust, heat, pounding. They look like something the military would wear ( which may be why I was originally attracted to them ) but if you're into extreme sports, or just enjoy the out of doors and working out, they're among the best. And the best part is they're only about $35.00! :)

I have a Cartier watch (it was a gift from my g/f), and it keeps pretty good time. As you would expect.
Cartier Tank Vermeil (http://www.orolus.com/cartier-tank.shtml)
(It's the Tank Vermeil one)

I want to get a Bvlgari watch this year, a Diagono model. I really like this one:
Bvlgari Diagono Chrono (http://www.orolus.com/cgi-bin/ShoppingCart.cgi?action=ShowPic&search_for=CH35BSLDAUTO&search_brn=BVLGARI&search_sty=Diagono%20Chrono&lowest_price=0&highest_price=99999&ori_action=Go&detail_category=.&detail_sizes=.&detail_keyword=.&search_logo=)
Or maybe something a bit less flashy, like this one:
Bvlgari Diagono Sport (http://www.orolus.com/cgi-bin/ShoppingCart.cgi?action=ShowPic&search_for=LCV29SSD&search_brn=BVLGARI&search_sty=Diagono%20Sport&lowest_price=0&highest_price=99999&ori_action=Go&detail_category=.&detail_sizes=.&detail_keyword=.&search_logo=)

If not Bvlgari, possibly another Cartier, a sport model this time. I particularly like this one:
Cartier Must 21 (http://www.orolus.com/cgi-bin/ShoppingCart.cgi?action=ShowPic&search_for=W10125U2&search_brn=CARTIER&search_sty=must%2021%20Chronoscaph&lowest_price=0&highest_price=99999&ori_action=Go&detail_category=.&detail_sizes=.&detail_keyword=.&search_logo=)

Dear, dear me. I think mine is a very old version of the Seamaster - so, although it probably not worth much itself anymore, it would in theory cost me between one thousand and four and a half thousand dollars (£500 - £2500 ??) to replace. Aaargh. I think I was happier not knowing.

You're right. When I was in the army that was our preferred watch. Mine went through dozens of jumps out of planes and banging onto rocks and so forth and it never broke.

The watch that I have now was a present for my 18th.

its a Seiko Kinetic Titainium Sports, with some gold plating too.

The kinetic system works fine, and its as tough as old boots too after being run over by a car and not one scratch on it! :D

Which was bloody lucky... ;)

Yes, well, I might forgive you one day. Or I might kill you. Unpleasantly. Who knows. But there again, you would probably kill me instead, seeing as you are the Angel of Death. Great. I am rabbiting. It is amazing the lengths that one will go to to avoid working. Enough!! *slinks away*

I have a Swatch, and I love it. They're cheap enough to get a new one every couple of years and they have so many different designs. Plus, they're cool. ;)

You'd be surprised. If it's 40 years old and in very good condition, it may well be worth more than a new one.
Sorry it that upsets you even more. ;)

Well, it could do with a little polish, and it has picked up some scratches (more in the few years I have had it than all of the years before, I think!), and the strap lost the end few joints; but I still have those joints and it could be repaired good as new in about ten seconds - a matter of sliding something somewhere and then twisting it, I am told (!). So aside from scratches on the glass, is almost perfect. I hate you!!

You should really take it into an authorised Casio dealer and have it cleaned and serviced. Good watches should get this done every 5 years or so, to keep them in top order. I think yours is probably well overdue.

When I was flying in the Marine Corps, I used to wear a cheap digital watch all the time. It was easy to read time and calculate time to target. Much better than using an analog watch.

But, I don't drop bombs anymore, and I really like any analog display better than any digital display. Funny thing for a digital designer to say, but even while I can think in hex, I'd rather tell time in analog.

I might just do that. When I have some money to spare, that is. Perhaps in three years, when I finish my degree. Or perhaps I'll ask for it to be paid for as a Christmas present.

I bought a pocket watch for a fiver. It's stylish, sophisticated, and gets me odd looks when i fish i out in the middle of public areas.

We're very happy together. *pats pocketwatch*
