A problem with "Supersize Me."

Many of you have seen the movie "Supersize Me" myself included. And, up till now I have seen it as very informative. But I have just recently changed by mind.

Now in the movie the guy says he must get everything off the menu at least once, and they ask for supersize he must take it. But here are the problems; nobody is being forced to order supersized. Just because someone asks you doesnt at all pressure you or put you in a funny spot, or make you a bad person if you say no thank you. If anything it will make you look bad to say yes. Here is problem #2, the guy, in the video, gets NO exersize, none, except walking to and back from McDonalds, and I believe he does it on purpose. Now I saw no law that when you go to McDonalds you had to also get no exercise, so whos fault is that, the producer, or the consumer? And third. I dont care whos cooking, it could be McDonalds, Greecy McGreecers or your mother cooking but if you eat milkshakes or sodas and burgers and fries twice a day (Im talking about lunch and dinner, Im not even counting bacon for breakfast.) You will get fat, you may get more fat from McDonalds' burgers and fries, but either way you will get fat. And as for having bacon, maple syrup and sausage for breakfast, thats not exactly health food either.

This is why SS me is bogus.

If you have any questions, ask.

McDonald's obvious isn't as damaging in realistic circumstances as it is in Supersize Me, but it's still junk food. I would not, however, sympathise with people who try to sue McDonald's for making them fat. Besides, McDonald's even makes salads nowadays, so people can't really blame the restaurant if they get fat.

Yeah and going to McDonalds once in a while isnt bad for you either. Actually, in the movie, they interviewed a couple of black guys talking about how much they loved McDonalds, and how they went there once a day, even more, but they were fit, not fat, thats because they exercized.

That struck me when I watched it, how he seemed to have a large shake with every meal, and then go take a nap. He was clearly stacking the deck for shock value. After all, who'd have watched the movie if it didn't make him fat and sick and all that?

But the McDonald's People have POWERS!

The only power the McDonalds people have is the power to make a delicious big mac!

As I recall (I haven't watched it, it's as stupid a concept as reality TV), the guy was also a vegetarian beforehand.

Of course suddenly jumping in to a different variety of food is going to be hard on his system, most of the flora in his body designed to digest that is DEAD, if not ALL of it, by then. It's like us trying to suddenly switch to the foods our appendix was designed to eat.

First, pay attention to the narration when you watch. It helps you clear up questions.

Remember the pedometer he wore? It indicated the average distance walked by people in a day.

Remember the case that prompted the experiment, the why he did this in the first place. Someone had to demonstrate possible harm from consumption. He wasn't suggesting that there was some parralell to the 'Subway' diet.

Remember that only getting super-sized when asked was part of what McDonalds promoted and was never an attempt to prove that McDonalds thugs where roaming the streets forcing people to get larger french fries.

Remember the marketing breakdown, where McDonalds relies on what they called 'heavy users'? People that more or less do what this guy did?

On the DVD there are some deleted scenes. One of them is worth mentioning. The guy takes a Big Mac, a Chicken McGrill, a Fish Filet (personally I think those things look nasty), some fries, and a burger and fries from some "restaurant" restaurant grill. He puts them into separate jars to see how long they take to mold over. The real fries, i.e. not McD's, mold over the next day, all black and such, and the burger does too. The fish and/or the chicken show some signs of mold, but the Big Mac doesn't. A few days later it starts to mold, etc. etc., the restaurant food was ahead until it got so nasty it was thrown out. The burger buns got all oozy and bubbly. Anyways, long story short...in 10 WEEKS the McDonalds' fries never showed any mold, not even a hint. Now if something doesn't mold you know something's wrong with it as far as edibility goes.

For those of you who have the DVD, look under "The Smoking Fry" in special features for this clip.

Storage being large Shipping containers sitting out in an Industrial Field in the hot sun. While closing up, one person forgot his McDonalds Breakfast sandwich. he had taken a bite outta it but put it down to help with some stuff.

the next year, we opened up the trailer and found that rats had been inside. they ate everything... including the insulator of our refridgerator. but sitting on the counter... looking as if it was freshly bought... with only that one bite in it... was that person's breakfast sandwich.

How bad is it when even the Rats won't touch it?

nobody is being forced to order supersized.I believe he was test to see if the staff asked him to supersize it. True, he didn't have to accept it to do that part of the test, but also the fact is he was trying to emulate an american lifestyle, do you think a REALLY "heavy user" would turn down a supersize offer? This is also his reason for doing no exercise, and i'm suprised he evens bothers to walk, how many taxis do those americans need? :p

if you eat milkshakes or sodas and burgers and fries twice a day (Im talking about lunch and dinner, Im not even counting bacon for breakfast.) You will get fatYou missed the point, the failed lawsuit stated that unless it was proved that eating a diet of pure macdonalds food for 30 days was harmful to your health, there was no chance of a sucessful lawsuit. They couldn't prove it, so it was dropped. He proved it, but too late.

Supersize Me was funny but not really a good indicator of the effects of McDonalds. Who the hell, other than complete idiots would eat McDonalds like that. Having never seen the movie I can speak with some authority when I say it was all propaganda and treehugger lies!!!
The real reason for not eating McDonalds is that Taco Bell provides cheaper, better tasting food that won't biodegrade!

I like the fact that even w/ this 'movie', McDonalds posted a 42% increase in profits. I bet he contributed to at least 5% of that.

His experiment was flawed, as he had another variable that he never took into account. He exercised well beforehand, and then barely exercised when the experiment began. This added an additional variable, so what caused the deterioration of his health could not be ascertained. The experiment was flawed.

I don't think he was. His girlfriend was vegan, but I'm pretty sure he was an ordinary omnivore.

Of course, that movie completely ignored the most important reason to avoid eating McDonalds... all their food tastes like salted cardboard.

YOU ate THEIR food. YOU don't HAVE to eat their food. YOU ate TOO MUCH of their food. YOU didn't have to eat too much of their food. It's YOUR damn fault. :)

Experiment was a bad term to use. Demonstration, spectical is perhaps better. It was not even presented as a real scientific study-mostly because it was just one guy. If you're going to nitpick his scientific method then you really missed the point of the film.

when did he try to pass it off as an experiment.
as i recall an experiment implies a control group and an experimental group. it also implies that the sample tested on is supposed to be representative of the actual population. he didnt even pretend this was the case

I think it was my bad, he was responding to a post I made where I erroniuosly refered to it as an experiment.

Has anyone else heard of a counterpoint to that movie? I remember reading an article about a man who did the same experiment, but he exercised, didn't supersize everything, and chose healthier things. I think he actually lost weight.
