Ape/human hybrids

I was indulging my love of the paranormal earlier today (yes I know its BS, but enjoy the stories, myths etc) when I came across this article....
click Here (http://paranormal.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.fatemag.com/2005%5F04art1.html).
I know the source is very unreliable to say the least and the story itself is probably 110% rubbish but it did get me thinking if cross breeding between humans and apes would be in the slightest way possible.
I'm not a scientist or biologist so have no idea about any of this stuff but from what I do understand humans and chimpanzees do share 98% of DNA (I could be wrong with this, so please correct me if I am), and we are both mammals, so wonder if there are scientists out there trying to create monsters. The very thought of it both facinates and scares me.
I'm not in any way saying this would be a good thing to do, hell no. I am sure very few people would even if it was posssible, so please don't fill the thread telling me that. You would be preaching to the choir :D.
I will also ask that the religious elements be kept to a minimum as it goes without saying that religions would be against anything like creating these type of creatures, again you would be preaching to the choir ;).

I would think that it would be completely impossible -- though our genetic code is 98% the same as a chimp's, that 2% is quite obviously pretty important.

You're probably right but it was'nt that long ago that cloning was thought to be impossible and then Dolly the sheep was born. A bit further back and IVF was thought to be impossible too so I can't help but wonder if there is any shred of reality in this story :).
I certainly hope not though. If (and its a huge if) these creatures are feasible, I can only imagine what they would be used for and how they would be treated. A new slave race perhaps.

to put it in perspective, we have like 60-70% same DNA as wheat lol (that figure may be higher or lower but i remember it was pretty high)

I highly doubt that, given that the US patent office (and I would think, any other gov't's) has rejected patents for human-animal hybrids on ethical bases. However, this link explores why such things are not possible:

That was an interesting article Katganistan even though I only understood about half of it. A scientist I ain't :D.
It probably is impossible. I just don't put anything past the scientific community these days, especially after all the hoohaa about human cloning thats been all over the news lately. I'm also sure that if rogue scientists want to do this or any other kind of very negative research, they'd find a way to do it and circumvent or avoid any government restrictions, by moving it to another nation if necessary.
Yes, our DNA may be 97% same with a bird, blue tit, but that doesn´t mean we´re 97% birds. Actually, most of our DNA is non-coding rubbish.
In theory it might be possible to create a man-ape hybrid. Even after solving the problems with incompatible chromosomes and fertilization it would die very soon in familial diseases (we all have in average 10 to 15 lethal genes). After solving that problem the outcome would still be infertile and unbalanced.
Would it be a good slave then? No. Gorilla would be better and much faster and cheaper to get. Robotics would be even better worth the money.
And one more thing: cloning and hybridization is different things. In cloning you take a functional nucleus from living organism and try to get it to produce a new individual. In hybridization you try to create a functional nucleus from DNA of different species and even get it to develop.
I'm also sure that if rogue scientists want to do this or any other kind of very negative research, they'd find a way to do it and circumvent or avoid any government restrictions, by moving it to another nation if necessary.
These projects are so big that you´d need a big team of those rogue scientists to get any results...

We're probably still genetically similar enough with chimps that you could get cross-fertilization to occur (edit: through artificial means of course), but I'd say there was next to zero chance of the result being viable.

If you must though, please make sure you get the right cage. Would hate to see the injuries if you try it on with a polar bear by mistake :D:D.

It's possible. Chimpanzees have 48 chromosomes, and we have 46, and if you did a hybrid it would be sterile (like a mule) and have 47 chromosomes.
Don't know who would be stupid enough to do something like that.

I don't know. Why would someone want to inject blue color into the brown eyes of a small child?

It would quite obviously be a hape. Or an aman. Either way it would have two heads, three arms and fifty-six legs. Or so I would imagine. The only way you could prove otherwise would be to make one. And I doubt that would be legal! So HA!

yea, that sounds about right to me too....
i say there is no way to know unless we try it! would you like to volunteer for the experiment? we could keep you and the ape out in the barn where the law couldnt find you. plus you get 3 meals a day :)

Hell, I wouldn't know. That was done to check whether non-Arians could be turned into Arians by their bodily look. Still doesn't make any sense to me, though.
Neither would the crossbreed of an ape & man - just out of curiosity is not enough a justification. There are certain ethics to abide to - otherwise we're back to ink-injections...

Why would the luminaries of Soviet science laud Ivanov’s uncanny research? According to Potapov, the Bolshevik elite wanted to destroy the belief in God, and subject nature to serve the new Soviet Man. As a former Soviet citizen myself, I can affirm that neither general ethical concerns nor Judeo-Christian beliefs would be of any interest to Soviet Marxists. Stalin, whose bloody star was rising in the crimson world of Soviet politics, would get hybrid slaves who would be completely obedient. The GULAG and its network of concentration camps would not be a necessity for the hybrids.
According to the article I linked to in the first post this is the reason this mad Russian scientist was experimenting with producing hybrids. For slave workers and to discredit religion. Though after saying all that I'm not even close to being convinced that the article is true. Makes an interesting story though :).

If you want a slave but you haven't got time to wait for gene-splicing biologists and horny bacteria to make babies, you could get a stay-at-home wife. I hear they make those now.
I intend to get several when I get my tax return.
