Just how uptight is the new catholic pope and how is this going to effect the world? Just curious on everyones thoughts on this.

I'm not happy, but I coulden't have expected profound change. I'm a little disturbed about his past Nazi history, but that's a little muddled.

Even if you look beyond his nazi past, his ultra conservative stance seems like a backwards step for the Catholic Church. Lots of debates are going on about this guy.

Being Catholic, i'm not sure how i feel about the new Pope. Truly, i'm a C&E catholic and i haven't even been that in awhile. I'm not sure what true power the church has anymore in the world of politics. I don't keep up on Papal activities, but i have to ask myself, what has the churh done for the world lately? My hope, that this Pope will take an active role in the world and world decision making.

C´mon, give this guy a break.

He was in the Hitler Youth. So what? It was COMPULSORY at this time. And he was DRAFTED into the Luftwaffe as a "assistant flak loader". Yeah, sure, blame him for that.

Anyone who tries to draw conclusions like "he was in the HJ therefore he HAS to be a stern faced, jew-gassing nazi" is a dickhead and has no gripe on history. Mind you, he´s actually pretty popular with the Jewish world. He´s hailed as a major champion of "christian-jewish" reconciliation.

So much for that.

Those dickhead UK newspapers just couldn´t resist to snipe a cheap attack against the Germans again, that´s all.

Hear, hear!

Couldn't have said it better myself!

I think I'm more concerned with his conservative stance than anything. His past in WWII is troubling, but not dire. His beliefs in women's roles is dissappointing, his views on other matters such as contraceptives ect. is equally narrow. I'm wondering how much he will change during his reign.

Oh, c'mon. I was chatting with some Catholic friends just yesterday, who opined that if (well, not 'if' really, but it's a turn of phrase) the Church has been having trouble keeping their numbers in North America and Europe, Ratzinger'll be driving 'em out in droves during his Papacy. I have no idea how he'll play out in the rest of the Catholic world - most likely fairly well...but Europe and North America?

Bad Choice.

Despite his conservative views, his claim that he'll follow in the footsteps of his predecessor seemed quite promising, as John Paul II took quite a few positive steps concerning community and peace. Who knows what'll happen.

He's big on Opus Dei. Read the writings of the founder of Opus Dei and let me know if you think he'll follow in the footsteps of John Paul II.

My only thought on this is he was born into a nazi family so thus he was nazi but just cause he was nazi as a youth dosen't mean that he is going to cause doom to the christians.

I'm not surprised in the least that they voted in an archaic, racist homophobe as pope. At least he's 78 so we get to have another shot in 5 years or so.

Membership of the Hitler Youth was compulsory. COMPULSORY. And he also deserted later on.

If you are concerned with the choice then perhaps you should look elsewhere for your spirituallity. If you truly follow the Catholic faith then you must believe that this Pope was choosen by God. All the cardinals said they felt the divine presence in the room while the descession was being made.

Practice what you preach, have faith in Gods plan, show forgiveness for his Nazi past. This is the basic trachings of your faith.

Or

If you can't do this......Then find what you truly believe in another faith. End the hippocracy.

I was raised Catholic. In fact I was asked when I was 16 to attend a pre-seminary workshop because 8 people at my church put my name in to be a preist.
I did a lot of soul searching & discovered I disagreed with many of the practices of the Catholic faith. I knew I had to discover where I belong & fit in. I knew remaining in the church would be a big mistake so when I was 18 I started searching for a faith of my own.
I am still on this journey but I have learned to listen to my inner voice & let it lead me instead of following something I only half heartedly believed in.

Marriage is for a man, and a woman. If you want to pack fudge with another man get your own bloody word. They probly voted ratzinger in because he would ensure the church held no sway with pedophiles OR gays. As for your racist remark, Ratzinger actually planned pope John paul IIz forgiveness to the jews. You know nothing so get your facts straight.
I wouldn't be surprised if you burnt in hell for flaming a pope.

As to Benedict XVI;

Ars longa, vita brevis.

I rest assured that we will be posting messages long after this pope will have festered, like any other mortal, in the crypt next to St.Peter.

What is far more worrying is what the church's intentions are in the long run, if they so readily and impromptu agreed on this transitory pope.

long live relativism.

I don't care what anyone says, the Pope is still but a man, and the Cardinals that elected him are men as well. Believing that a man is the the absolute choice of God is old dogma, useless in today's world.

You sir, have issues. You are also a closet homosexual. I know this is painfully obvious to anyone who read Drahken's post, but I think he's the kind of guy who needs things pointed out for him - like the dickensian plot-twists in the Flintstones.

I was raised a Catholic...as for considering myself a Catholic, I have no idea. Alot of the things that have happened recently have alienated me a bit.

I hear ya.

I'm just saying this is the belief of that church. As outmoded as it is it's church law & their beliefs.

I have to say a lot of things I learned through life about the Catholic past have alieniated me.

He was NOT born into a "NAZI family". His father was a police officer who actually got into trouble because he didn´t agree with what the nazis wanted him to do.
