Yes, spam! Behold its spammy goodness! Spam it up! Woo.......okay, I'm going to level with you; this isn't really a spam topic, I've just noticed that spam threads get more notice than non-spam, so I decided to cash in on their instant appeal.
The real topic title: The Leagues version of the War of the Worlds
As I'm sure most of you know, the H.G. Wells Science-Fiction story The War of the Worlds details a Martian invasion of Earth. It takes place at the turn of the 20'th Century, before humans have even achieved rudimentary flight, and the Martians thouroughly trounce humanity through advanced technology and complete lack of morals. In addition to heat rays and whatnot they also use poison gasses, the likes of which we've finally managed to stop using once we saw its effects. Anyway, after the Martians have torn up Earth (Well, they've really only torn up England so far, they haven't gotten to the rest of the Earth yet) they suddenly cease their destructive activities and drop dead. The cause: They caught a cold. I'm serious. The Martians had no immunity to Earth-native bacteria and viruses and were easy prey for the microscopic killers. Yay for Earth, we kicked Mars's ass! w00t!
In The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Volume II, the League is faced with that same Martian invasion. For those who don't know, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a graphic novel which involves several fictional heroes (and villains) of 19'th century literature joining forces and doing nifty things in the service of the British Crown. Among the Leagues membership is adventurer Alan Quatermain, explorer Captain Nemo, The Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, and Mina Harker (maiden name: Murray). In Volume I the League ends up being duped by and combating Professor James Moriarty (Of Sherlock Holmes fame) and in this volume they find themselves fighting alien invaders. Well, after some keen things happen (Some of which are, frankly, quite sickening) the League is dispatched to contact Dr. Moreau (Yes, the Dr. Moreau) and retrieve H-142, a creation of Moreau, to bring back to London to hopefully halt the alien onslaught. They meet Moreau (Funnily enough, Moreau's creatures stumble upon Quatermain and Murray when they're in a....uh....compromised position) and get H-142, bring it back to London, and unleash it upon the aliens. What is H-142 you ask? Why, a mixture of anthrax and streptococcus, of course. Biological warfare in 1898. The Crown denies any knowledge of such a creation and claim that the aliens did, in fact, die of the common cold. Everybody wins! (Well, except for the poor souls who were still in London when they gassed the place)
I think that the League truly did a good job of adapting The War of the Worlds, and I find it interesting how humanity is now responsible for the defeat of the Martians, instead of us just getting lucky. Your thoughts?
