I wasn't surprised. I think it will prove interesting considering Germany has a rather large Protestant population.

Yes we have a Pope! (a bit slow on the uptake.....) I just hope he will not turn out to be way to overly conservative and as long as he does not condemn people and say they are going to hell then he's fine with me.

not really.... only about 34% Protestant. There are about the same amount of Catholics there

As I said in the poll I have going, I think he looks scary. I don't like that fact that he's so consevative, but we'll see what happens.

I'm sure there's some kind of irony in having a German pope right after we had a Polish one.

Well, okay, it's just that I've got a gut-feeling that he ain't stupid and knows what's going on and thus - I mean, he's been like the head-inquisitor, how much more conservative can you be?!? - Now has the freedom to do God's will however he pleases.

If it's good, I like it, if it's not comprehensible to me - don't know!

After all, it all depends on the world's population as well to see what happens. And you all know it: It's a crazy world out there - and He smiled and saw that it was good! :D

Yeah. I also find his choice in names amusing. Being an American, I associate the name Benedict with the Revolutionary War traitor Benedict Arnold who defected to the British. So that gives me pause as well. But, thats just me.

Okay, well in Popes' names there are many to choose from (You could even make one up if the Holy Spirit told you to).

Benedictus XV. was Pope during WW1. The Great War. He tried to bring Peace to the stupid European people waging war amongst Christian Nations.

He could have chosen John Paul III. - but that would always cause a direct comparison.

John XXIV. or Paul VII. are pretty good too, but high numbers.

During the 1930s we've had a Pius XIII. - a German Pope could never call himself Pius XIV.

Next on the list would be Benedict XV.

It again is a time of change, like it was back at the last turn of the century, thus: Benedict XVI. - Benedictus XVI - Benedikt XVI. (Roman numbers rock!)

Actually it was Pius XII and was accused of being passive and condescendent with Nazism. (Certanlly no german pope will)

John and Paul would mean he is a reformer in a vatican II style (taht he isn't)

I Woulda went with something like: Pope Mystical Underwear

I guess it should be "Wir haben einen Papst" now

Without knowing anything about him, he does look like someone the Ark of the Covenant would melt when its opened.
