In New Jersey there's a small town in the pine barrens called "Ong's Hat". I don't know who Ong was, or what was so special about his hat that they had to name a town after it, but there you go.

Are there any strange town names near where you live?

Hmmm... I remember a vacation trip my family went on where there was a town called Chunky. And yes, there were signs on the side of the road that said, "Chunky River". :p I don't think it counts as local, tho, as it's in another state.

Nowhere, CA the population is 0.

Trona, CA this is the worst city I have ever seen in my life. It is supported by sulfer and salt mines and the mixing of the two smells is vomit worthy. In the town they had three different kinds of businesses, supermarkets, bars and churches.

The Pine Barrens are the home of the Jersey Devil, and the final resting place of some Italian-American businessmen who seem to mysteriously disappear.

There seems to be tons of weird stuff in NJ. I wonder if it's an interdimensional portal?

Plus, the search has revealed some very interesting paranormal occurences and links in Ong's Hat.

Such as Ong's Hat & the mysterious Incunabula Texts (http://www.marsearthconnection.com/ong.html)?

I particularly liked this page (http://www.incunabula.org/ebooks.html), personally.

...wait, isn't Incunabula an album by Amon Tobin?

New Jersey is damn cool. If I was going to move somewhere based on the local legends and oddities, it would probably by NJ.

Well, there's Embarrass (http://www.embarrass.org/), Minnesota. The capital city, St. Paul was originally called Pigs Eye, and we have the illustrious Bong Bridge, which connects Duluth with Superior, Wisconsin.

Waxahachie
South of Dallas means "Buffalo Dung" in Comanche. The early settlers asked the natives what a good name for a town was. The natives are probably still laughing

Mong Kok
A neighborhood here in Hong Kong seems to make Aussies laugh. I've been afraid to ask why.

For that matter: Hong Kong means
"Fragrant Harbor" in Chinese. That really funny :)

Burke Burnett
A town on the Texas Oklahoma border may not be the weirdest name but the sell t-shirts that say "Burke Burnett, it isn't the end of the world but you can see it"

Buffalo NY
Actually a mangeled bit of French because there were never any Buffalo in that area. The name comes from "Beau Fleur" or beautiful river.

Smackover Arkansaw
Comes from the French words for "Covered bridge.

Mong, as in mongaloid: defective, broken, invalid, of poor quality, mangled, smashed, defective at birth, wrong shape et cetera

Kok: Cock, a penis

Thus mong kok would be something like 'damaged penis' or a description of someone who was born with a handicapped penis

Not a town but with a population of several hundred it it could be.
There is a public housing estate in the Hong Kong area of Tsuen Wan called Fuk Yiu Estate.

You'd think they'd have thought that one through a little bit more given that English is the OFFICIAL language here. However, I think that it is probably a pretty good name for a public housing estate given that it is not a great place to live.

Nasty clothing chain
The French Connection United Kingdom which goes by its initials of FCUK. Don't get me wrong, there is a place in the world for cursing in appropriate situations. (Striking ones hand with a hammer, realizing you forgot make the mortage paynment for the last six-months that kind of thing) Marketing clothing to teenage girls doesn't appear to me to be one of them.

Wierd personal names
In Hong Kong kids that go to English schools often get to pick their own English name. Sometime they pick some rather strange ones.

In Hong Kong I've met women with the following names
Lingerie
Malaria
Wincy
Pinky
Irate

And my all time favorite: Ping Pong

Bog Row, Northumberland, UK.

Given that the vernacular for toilet is 'bog' in that part of the world, I alays thought it was an unfortunate name.
