Would the human race, as a whole, be lost if there were no religon? Why or why not?

Religion is the #1 cause of death. That may sound like a condemnation of religion, but think of the population problems we'd have if that never happened.

No, it isnt required for survival. I think that religion is something that ties people together, but that can be found in other things.

No, but certain people would be lost without religion.

I'd laugh at them.

I think a total lack of religion could only be a good thing. It's one less thing to fight over, one less reason to deny logic in favor of superstition. We can get all the good parts of religion, community, morality, etc. from secular sources.

...I think humanity as a whole would be better off without religion. Perhaps more people would take responsibility for their actions instead of saying, "God told me to" or "It was fate which caused me to do it" or whatever. Maybe more people would make their own dreams come true.

We would not be lost without religion. We are lost because of religion.

Human kind would probably carry on just fine.

NS would be dead though.

Well, if there never WAS religion, I doubt humanity would have had the unity to establish anything in the earlier days.
If religion just disappeared right now?
Well, I'd miss it...I think we would have a less more society (not significantly, but not slightly either), but pretty much everything in the world would be the same.
I don't think we'd end the world.

NS would live on. We'd still have bush, sexism, and cultural imperialism to argue about.

I think if we lost religion right now the world wouldn't change much because of how secular most of the "religious" people of the world actually are. To most people today relgion really just amounts to not being free on Sundays. It's more a label than an identity any more.

Yeah, and those annoying Christians vs. Atheists threads would finally end.

I would not be lost without religion. I would just find God in my own way.

The Christian vs. Atheist arguments would go a hell of a lot smoother if both sides would read up on logical fallacies before trying to debate.

But, I know atheism is true because there is no god.

well had there never been religion... I wonder if our laws would even resemble what they do now.

also... everyone seems to think that religion serves no useful purpose... i was raised to think of mine as a guide for how to (generally) live my life... to respect others, be kind to others, take responsibility for myself and my actions, keep my word, etc... and to get to heaven.

Are you saying that our morals come from religion?

What you're talking about there is just basic morality and respect, which religion certainly doesn't have a monopoly on.

We would be much better without religion. Different, but better.
