The last Pope???

Eutrusca
19-04-2005, 17:16
There are prophecies and traditions, both in and out of the Catholic Church, which say that this Pope will be the last. This is just one more indicator that the world will change forever in some way in the year 2012. Some of the other indicators are the Myan Calendar, the I Ching, and ( according to some ) the prophecies of Nostradamus.

A new Pope has been selected, although at this point we don't know who it is. Will this one be the last?

What are you talking about? Don't be superstitious and believe into that stuff like Maya Calendar and Nostradomos? Didn't Nostradamos predict the world would end in 1999? Apparently that hasn't happened. Please, be reasonable... :)

I'll start worrying when a prophecy unequivically(sp?) comes true. Since it hasn't happened yet, (none of the bibilical ones, nor nostradamus, have without massive amounts of interpretation and fudging) I'm not worrying about it.

I wouldn't count Nostradamus as a reliable source for anything (since nobody has ever broken the code, if there's even one).

The whole thing with prophecies just doesn't work. There is no way that someone could foresee the future, there are too many factors for something like that.

Now the question is, what will happen in 2012? Of course, nobody knows that and the usualy answer is "the world will change significantly". Mhmm... I'll believe it when I see it.

If it's the last pope?

Do you really think I care enough?

IIRC according to the prophecies of St Malachi this will the penultimate one, with "Peter the Roman" being the last

The thing with these 'prophesies' is that they usually weren't meant to predict the future at all. they are, in the most part, comments on what is happening in the world all the time. when these prophesies 'come true' it's just the old "history repeating itself" thing rearing it's ugly head (again).

List of things wrong with this
1) The more obscure the prophecy, the more likely it is to "come true" For instance, if I made the claim in 2003 that "Something significant will happen in 2004" I couldn't NOT be right.
2) You watched that damn discovery channel movie didn't you >.< Listen people "eruption" does not mean "catastrophe". Yes, Yellowstone Park will erupt, but chances that it will be a MASSIVE explosion are slim to none, the reason that movie exaggerated the damage it would cause is because worldwide destruction makes good telelvision (I am so pissed at the discovery channel for throwing logic out the window on this one though).

Regarding such massive volcanic explosions, that happened twice in the past two million years (Yellowstone volcano - and the Toba volcano), and i don't know of any visible impact on the ecosystem. I may be mistaken, though.

Perhaps you haven't heard about the last 3 eruptions of Yellowstone?

1.8 million years ago it erupted with a crater about the size of Wyoming.
1.2 million years ago it erupted with about half that.
600,000 years ago it erupted with about 1/4 that. (about the size of present day Yellowstone park)
If it follows the same pattern, sometime in the very near future we'll have a crater the size of half of yellowstone park, which means roughly 25-40 miles in diameter - which is at least about 25 times the size of any other crater worldwide. It also happens to be about the size of Yellowstone Lake...

They have found rock from the 600,000 year ago eruption in Nebraska...

EDIT: Actually, I just double checked my figures. They're off a little bit. 1.8 million years ago the crater was about 200 miles in diameter. 1.2 it was about 100-150 miles in diameter. 600,000 it was about 75 miles in diameter (about the size of yellowstone)

Yup. This is the last pope, because five years from now he will become... a cyborg!!! And then rule the Church forever!!!

And, yeah, it was St. Malachy who predicted the next popes. This is the last one he predicted, although it's unclear whether that's because he ran out of paper to write the others or because there will be no more popes.

Later, much later, another pope was added to the prediction, "Peter of Rome" who would be the anti-Pope just before the end of the world.

About Nostradamus, he wrote in a very confusing style, very opened to interpretation. Anyone can say Nostradamus predicted anything and it would never be clear.

The 111th prophecy is "Gloria Olivae" (The Glory of the Olive). The meaning of the olive is unclear. The Order of Saint Benedict – not St. Malachy – has claimed that this pope will come from its ranks and Saint Benedict himself prophesied that before the end of the world his Order, known also as the Olivetans, will triumphantly lead the Catholic Church in its final fight against evil.

Prophecy-Schmophecy. Nostradamus was so oblique virtually anything could happen and it would be "in accordance with Prophecy".
Likewise, there was a goodly amount of speculation in 1940 that Adolph Hitler was the Antichrist-because he fit so many of both Nosty's and St. John the Divine's loose 'criteria'.
Were I to be a Christian (instead of an Agnostic Deist), I would highlight to those shouting "Revelation" this: Jesus himself said that no man would know the hour or manner of his coming, that he would be arriving by the sneaky way, instead of the blatant-overt-here-I-am way. Taking it in what I believe was the context, Revelations wasn't about "This is going to happen", as much as a warning of what can happen if we let things get bad enough.

Free Will, folks.

People predicted that Haley's Comet was the end of the world several times, and committed suicide in terror that the world was ending.

Need I mention the people who committed suicide when Hale-Bopp passed, thinking it would beam them to the Mother Ship?

People hate change. Therefore, all change is viewed with suspicion and horror. I don't give much credence to any "end of the world" prophecies, especially not with any specific date in mind.

To quote a certain snake:

"Beo-ay sunami-ay, dona-ay es requiem"
translating roughly as:
"Death at the end (apocalypse?), let them rest"
And that's from my Latin teacher :P

This is the same quote from Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Where the monks hit themselves in the head after each verse)

Sorry...carry on... =)

Yeah, but if you believe the hype about St. Malachy - not that I have done any research into it - he was accurate about all the other Popes thus far. Sometimes spookily accurate. And now Ratzinger goes and calls himself Benedict. That's a pretty incredible coincidence - unless, of course, ratzinger has a warped sense of humor.

Actually, St Malachy was clearly and demonstrably wrong (if he didn't just run out of paper). He only prophesized 111 popes after Innocent II. That would have been John Paul II. And he said that in JP's time, 'peace would reign in the Middle East'.

Not that I noticed.

It wasn't until 1820 that a Benedictine monk added the 112th pope to St Malachy's list, because St Benedictine had prophesized that the final pope would be from the order of St Benedict. Thus the implication that the new pope does believe he will be the last -- or has an unexpected sense of humour.

Hm, Nostradamus has been obscure, yet entirely accurate about all popes so far, and the mayans were right each time. There is rumored to be an unstoppable asteroid headed to earth that will destroy all life, just like with the dinosaurs. also, yellowstone ppark is overdue to erupt, which will cause destruction on a worldwide scale (ie america to europe and asia - opposite sides).

[Bolded for emphasis on my answers]

1. Proof? There is no evidence of an asteroid on a direct course for Earth for at least the next 25 years.

2. I assume you watched "Supervolcano" on Discovery too... Well, they explicitly stated that the next eruption shouldn't be for another couple thousand years at least, as the changes seen in the park today are nowhere near the scale to present a problem.

Check your facts before making stupid posts.

Oh, and all I hope is that the Church colapses. I don't want the work do end though!

Again, I have done no research into this, but I am fairly sure that the only thing Malachy said about JPII was from the labour of the sun. Nothing about the middle east. (But I could be wrong).

I think the popes simply follow Malachy.

John Paul should actually have been Carolus(His Polish name Karol becomes Carolus in Latin) Instead of Benedict Ratzinger should be what, Julius maybe?

I think they follow the damned list to prove Malachy right. I would have been scared if he predicted their actual names, not their pope names. If he said that a German named Ratzinger would become pope in 2005 AD, I'd been impressed!

All the doomsday talk makes me hungry! Pizza anyone?

Malachy's Prophecies - The Last 10 Popes

1. The Burning Fire. PIUS X. 1903-1914. This Pope showed a burning passion for spiritual renewal in the Church.

2. Religion Laid Waste. BENEDICT XV. 1914-1922. During this Pope's reign saw Communism move into Russia where religious life was laid waste, and World War I with the death of millions of Christians who were carnage in Flanders Field and elsewhere.

3. Unshaken Faith. PIUS XI. 1922-1939. This Pope faced tremendous pressure from fascist and sinister powers in Germany and Italy, but he was an outspoken critic of Communism and Fascism which enraged Hitler.

4. An Angelic Shepherd. PIUS XII. 1939-1958. This Pope had an affinity for the spiritual world and received visions which have not been made public. Peter Bander says Pius XII "has emerged as one of the great Popes of all time," and he "was in the truest sense of the word an Angelic Pastor to the flock..."

5. Pastor and Mariner. JOHN XXIII. 1958-1963. John was a pastor to the world, much beloved, and the Patriarch of Venice. The connection to "mariner" is thus remarkable.

6. Flower of Flowers. PAUL VI. 1963-1978. Paul's coat-of-arms depicts three fleurs-de-lis, corresponding to Malachay's prophecy. His coat of arms included three fleurs-de-lis (iris blossoms).

7. Of the Half Moon. JOHN PAUL I. 1978-1978. John Paul I was elected Pope on August 26, 1978, when there was a half moon. He reigned 33 days, that is, about one month, when he died, although many think he was murdered. He was the 109th Pope - is "De Medietate Lunae" (Of the Half Moon). The corresponding pope was John Paul I (1978-78), who was born in the diocese of Belluno (beautiful moon) and was baptized Albino Luciani (white light). He became pope on August 26, 1978, when the moon appeared exactly half full. It was in its waning phase. He died the following month, soon after an eclipse of the moon.

8. The Labor of the Son. JOHN PAUL II. 1978-2005. Pope John Paul II was the most traveled Pope in history. He circled the globe numerous times, preaching to huge audiences everywhere he went. He survived an assassination attempt. He has written a book which has enjoyed a large circulation. Like the sun which never ceases to labor and provides light daily, this Pope has been incessant. He was born on May 18, 1920. On that date in the morning there was a near total eclipse of the sun over Europe. Prophecy - The 110th Pope is "De Labore Solis" (Of the Solar Eclipse, or, From the Toil of the Sun). Like the sun he came out of the East (Poland).

9. The Glory of the Olive. The Order of St. Benedict has said this Pope will come from their order. It is interesting that Jesus gave his apocalyptic prophecy about the end of time from the Mount of Olives. This Pope will reign during the beginning of the tribulation Jesus spoke of. The 111th prophesy is "Gloria Olivae" (The Glory of the Olive). The Order of Saint Benedict has claimed that this pope will come from their ranks. Saint Benedict himself prophesied that before the end of the world his Order, known also as the Olivetans, will triumphantly lead the Catholic Church in its fight against evil.

10. PETER THE ROMAN - This final Pope will likely be Satan, taking the form of a man named Peter who will gain a worldwide allegiance and adoration. He will be the final antichrist which prophecy students have long foretold. If it were possible, even the very elect would be deceived. The 112th prophesy states: "In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Petrus Romanus, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End."

Malachy's final words, "Rome, the seat of the Vatican, will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people."

I kow all these diffrent prophecies and calanders all agree in their own fashion that the world will end December 22, 2012, and that one even said midnight. I have. And quite frankly, it's the result of some serious drugs.

Besides, according to it, the only people who get to go to heaven are 144,000 virgin Jewish males. See you in hell, kid.
Some Christian religions do believe the book to be literal, but I think that most consider Revelations to be an entirely figurative book, and not literal at all. That, combined with the significance of numbers in the bible, leads most scholars to believe that 144 000 refers to a great multitude. After all, it seems rather illogical that John, an apostle who had been 'spreading the gospel' would believe such a limited number would get to heaven.

Edit: I really only posted because I want the free dinner when the world ends.

Which ones? Other than the Mayan one I keep hearing about.. the Yellowstone thing could be whenever, lord knows (ha) how long Benedict will reign, Nostradamus never used dates (except for 1666 and 1999, neither of which are relevant here, obviously), and somebody mentioned but didn't spell out what the I Ching is supposed to prophesize. So really... what is there here besides the one Mayan thing to point at that date?

It's been stated that this Pope is the last predicted. Malachy prophecied 266 Popes. Pope 263 "the cresent moon" lived and died during one lunar month Pope 264 "Lunar eclipse" John Paul II was born during a Lunar eclipse. Pope 265 is prophecied to be pro Zionist and 266 is prophecied to oversee the last days including the destruction of Rome...see Revelations

Get the facts straight.

1. Malachy prophecied 112 popes.
2. 109 "Half Moon" - Became pope and died within one month.
3. 110 "Sun's Labour" - Was born and buried during solar eclipses.
4. 111 "Glory of the Olive" - where's the Zionism in that?
5. 112 "Peter the Roman" - Okay, you got this one right.

Personally, I don't think that the end of the world is going to be an asteroid or a battle of mythical proportions between good and evil.

Rather, I think that the end of the world will really just be the end of the world as we know it. I think that the human population will be culled greatly by a virus, perhaps one similar to the Ebola virus, only airborne (which will spread much more effectively).

All in all, I think that human existence will, as T.S Eliot said in his poem “The Hollow Men,” end with a whimper.

“This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.”
