I have supported Chelsea since 1969 (When I first became interested in football.) They were the closest team to where I lived in the, at the time, first division. Later Wimbledon entered, but I never could adopt Vinnie Jones and company as a decent team.

Just sick of it being assumed that I support Man U wherever I go in the world just because I say I'm from Manchester.

Is Nottingham Forrest in the Premiership? If not, I sort of keep my eyes on Leeds United if they're in.

I'm a D.C. United (United States of America's Major League Soccer) supporter personally...

(Never would have pegged you for a Liverpool fan Frangland)

one thing about being fairly new to the EPL (and Euro soccer in general) is how I can cheer for teams who are rivals...

for instance, I like both City and ManU. (I prefer ManU, but when City are playing I often find myself pulling for them... Wright-Phillips is awesome and they have an American, Claudio Reyna, playing for them)

I see Arsenal/ManU as a large rivalry and with this one, I have tken ManU's side... I am not a fan of Arsenal.

I want England to do well in europe and when I see EPL perennial powerhouse Arsenal do poorly in the Champions League nearly every year... well that makes me think poorly of them.

So with Liverpool... how can a team who just beat a Euro top-5 team, Juventus, TIE SPURS AT HOME?

it makes no sense.. it's almost as if the Reds are putting more effort into their Champions League games than they are their EPL matches.

so i guess these are my favorite EPL teams, in order:

Liverpool
Tottenham Hotspur
Manchester United
Man City
Newcastle United
Southampton (even though they suck)

I too am an american... you can watch the EPL on Fox Sports World (AKA Fox Soccer Channel)

they have live games on Saturday morning... play replays throughout the week from about 8-10pm EST.

the difference in the level of play between MLS and the EPL is like this:

if an average EPL team -- say, Aston Villa -- were to play DC United, Villa would beat them by probably 3 or 4 goals.

A top EPL team like Chelsea or ManU might beat DC United about 6-0 or 6-1.

so get into the real soccer! hehe

You are new to this if you think of Arsenal as a "perennial powerhouse". The two English teams that could justifiably claim that title are Manchester United and Liverpool. Arsenal have been, for most of their existence, a competent, top half of the table team, but not exactly a powerhouse.

Rivalries in English football are not as clear as they could be. Man U vs Arsenal has only recently become important. If you ask a traditional gunners fan who they have to beat, the answer would be Spurs most of the time, and Chelsea some of the time. London clubs tend to compete more against other London clubs.

Man U have to beat Leeds U and vice versa. Man U vs Man City is important, but it does not generate the same passion. Liverpool vs Everton is also a traditional rivalry.

i've been told that Liverpool/Everton is the most heated rivalry in England.

as for liverpool, i know that they have the most European glory, winning the CL 4 times.

here's hoping for a return to glory! (though i fear chelsea will be too tough to handle)

Chelsea/AC Milan should be great

As a Man U fan I can say I don't give a damn about Leeds....but Man City.....grrr.....thats most definitely the more heated rivalry.

Ha, my boyfriends banned from my house when Man U have got a big match... whenever he's here and they play, they lose :(

OK. My opinion was based on studying in Leeds and the local reaction to Leeds U vs Man U. It may be that the hatred was more one way.

Well, out of the English teams, I have to say my favourite is Liverpool. Despite their general crappiness at most times, it's nice that they can still pull it out of the bag when it really counts, e.g. Juventus.

However, I don't support Liverpool. That honour is bestowed upon the great Arminia Bielefeld, who take on Bayern Munich in the semi-final of the Pokal Cup tomorrow evening. Come on, beat them again!

Hey, a football thread! yay!

I can't beleive you didn't put Blackburn on the poll.
I became fan when the they won premiership (95)
I was 9 at the time. My love for football has grown ever sense

While I root for Blackburn I can't say that I would be huge
fan. I'm more of fan of the sport rather than team. So
I like watching many teams for theyr style of play.
Arsenal matches are always good. I didn't like when Chelsea
started buying players by bulk, but Now it seems like they
really made something out of it. So good players that you
can't not like them.

Edit: And newcastle cause of the Shearer. My fav.

That's like narcoleptic cricket, right?

Seriously, comparing baseball to football is, well, ludicrous.

Football and ice hockey maybe. Golf and baseball, definitely.

Cricket's more exciting than baseball, and more interesting.

Well... what to say. Since I have found another football thread (praise the Lawd), I'll launch into a long, pointless rant about the EPL.

Arsenal - Arrogant (at least to me), for no real just cause. Played well one season, and that made them believe that every other team should polish their boots. Take out Henry, and they are a Spurs quality side... and Pires: STOP DIVING!!!

Man Utd. - Always a neutral when it comes to the Red Devils, but it seems that squandering 30 million pounds on Rooney was one of Fergie's worst blunders. Buy a keeper, Sir Alex.

Chelsea - Supportable (not a real word) before the Mourinho phase. Their success seems somewhat fraudulent to me because half of their starting 11 came to be because one of their supporters happens to be one of the world's richest team (then again, I support Real Madrid, so perhaps I should close my mouth). Sounds crazy, but they are the second least English team in the PL (behind the Trotters), and this counter-attacking style is a big reason for their CL success...

So, to summarise: In the EPL, I support Tottenham.
