Are women becoming men?

I see so many women who don't wear makeup, wear pants all the time, and have short hair!!! Some even refrain from shaving their legs. I don't wear much makeup, does that mean I am becoming a man?

isn't it horrible? we may even reach a point where people dress and groom themselves based on their personality and individual comfort level, rather than adjusting their appearance to conform to traditional gender roles!

NO you tool: It simply means you couldn't be arsed to go to all that trouble or perhaps you don't have the time, I don't wear make up every day to college, it would destroy my skin, I have never worn much make up and have always had pretty good skin compared to some of my friends, I wear pants most of the time becos I have horrible legs, I don't have short hair, I love my hair.

Hmmm, let's see...

I usually hate make-up and thus barely use it (only on very special occasions and then not really a lot).

I usually wear pants, you see me in a skirt usually only on Halloween if it's part of the costume.

I usually have short hair, just currently letting it grow because I don't want to wear a wig on this year's Halloween. I think that short hair is more comfortable.

And... I don't shave my legs that often either.

*checks self* But I don't look male... so...

Let me see....

Makeup is a waste of time and money. Why should I give my hard earned cash to rich cosmetics corporations just because I'm a woman? I wear makeup on special occasions, and that's it.

I wear jeans because they are comfortable, offer freedom of movement, and allow me to wear running shoes instead of high heels. So, when I'm 80, I won't have to have operations on the tendons in my legs because wearing high heels constantly shortened them, and I won't have to have my little toe chopped off so I can wear shoes with pointy fronts. Also, I don't have to wear nylons which are hot and snag on everything all the time.

What else? Ah yes, shaving. I don't see where that's anyone's business, but I do shave my pits, and my legs on the rare occasion that I wear a skirt. And if you have a problem with pubic hair, there's a good chance that you're a closet pedophile and just haven't realized it yet. Adult women have hair. It's a characteristic of sexual maturity. Get over it. No one I've slept with has ever complained about hairy legs -- in fact, some preferred it, since I rarely had stubble, which means no razor or stubble burn in sensitive places.

Oh my god, I must not be a woman, I don't do anything right. /sarcasm

That pedophile thing is a load of crap. I have heard many people make that argument. Some people just don't like body hair. It's not comfortable. It makes you sweat. It makes you stink.

I don't really think body hair is all that unattractive, I just don't prefer it.

Of course not. It just means you're expressing your personality and preferences, and doing what makes you more comfortable.

I don't know about other men, but I for one prefer women with little or no make-up. Or, if they wear some, only very discreet make-up. Lips, for example. I've never been attracted to women with red lips. *shrugs* But maybe that's just me...

No, no it's not just you.
I like country-ish girls. And since I live in Iowa, that's not hard to find.
Not the stupid, country-loving only put on this earth to birth children kind, but the sensetive, down to earth and *mostly* all natural ones. (I don't expect for them to totally lack hair, but if I start comparing the ammount of hair on our legs, then it's kinda gross). I know that the hair thing is a double-standard piece of crap by society, so call me a tool. It's just a preference from a normally very "out there" in terms of society guy.
But being down to earth is VERY important to me. That's what I like about this state.

Wait, how is it that wearing jeans, not wearing makeup, working outside the home, having careers, etc. does nothing to diminish a woman's femininity, yet when a man slaps on moisturiser, he becomes a girly-man and grows a vagina? I'd like Tink's take on this.

Legs?..uh-uh. Didn't need to. Now epilate maybe in the future. (evil English genes)
Make-up...special occasions.
Music...classic & soft rock mostly, starting to get heavier.
Computers. Need I say more?
Diets? What are they? Might not always be bothered to eat, but never intentionally diet.
Toning/scrubbing/moisturising: when I have time/can be bothered.
Cleaning/ironing: I suck, now leave my stuff alone!

My feminine side: nail varnish, dresses and flowers.

The characteristics I'd suggest have more to do with women becoming men or at least like them is their increased promiscuity and willingness to be involved in uncommitted relationships, career orientedness rather than people orientedness, material aquistion mentality, willingness to use anything and everything in a cutthroat selfish manner to aquire what they want when they want it.

I'm not saying that women working and or holding the highest of position is a bad thing. I believe woman kind is losing its feminity and relational superiority very rapidly though.

I've never been arsed to do any of the things that most girls started doing as they started into puberty.

Makeup: Only happened if my sister attacked me, or for formal events. And for the formal events it was because people said I should.

Shaving: Never shaved my legs. Too troublesome in my opinion, especially since I wear pants. Armpits if I'm going to be wearing sleeveless shirts. There's something more obscene about armpit hair...

Dresses/Fashion in general: I started disliking dresses and skirts at a young age, and now only wear them on very rare occasions. Like once a year. And fashion? Pfft! I'm probably the least fashionable person out there, of any style. I just wear what's comfy. And has lots of pockets. Mm, combats...

Boys: Only a passing interest and maybe 2 or 3 crushes. These rarely even involved thoughts of kissing. Died out after age of 12.

Heck, I didn't even get into bras until it became absolutely necessary.

But in no way do I think this makes me male, or even particularly masculine. Sure I'm not exactly feminine, but I am most definitely a girl. If anything it moves more towards androgyny. All in all though, I sometimes think that my complete lack of interesting in making myself attractive as a girlfriend probably goes along with my lack of interest in sex. It's an interesting thought.

Ew. That was a lot about myself...

When were those attributes ever truly in the domain of one gender?

I'm not saying that women working and or holding the highest of position is a bad thing. I believe woman kind is losing its feminity and relational superiority very rapidly though.

Could that, perhaps, be due to the fact that "femininity" never really applied to many women anyways? Perhaps it was always a made-up ideal that most people didn't really fit?

"Femininity" is the essence of being a woman. Perhaps what the essence of being a woman is is changing, but I do believe it exists.

What I would refer to as the relational superiority of women, is their capacity to form relationships on the basis of a combination of factors more likely to include intuitive knowledge rather than a list of verified facts. Using a greater level of perception than observation and allowing feelings to provide validation for decisions. That isn't to say that feelings are always valid or properly understood mind you, but they are tied to an interpretation of information in a manner that in some respects supercedes anything that can be empirically validated.

Also of note, I don't believe men to be incapable of the above, just less likely to utilize it...

That makes you masculine, you are not feminine so you must be masculine, a woman who is interested in her job or career or herself more than others is no more admirable than a man with the same qualities, a woman like that is just a man with breasts and a vagina.

I don't think women feel the need to conform any more. We work in the same environments as men - I'm in the electronic industry - why should we not enjoy the same comforts as men - short hair is much easier to manage, shaving of legs causes ingrowing hairs and waxing is so painful, pants eliminate sweaty thigh chaffing. I get dressed up in my little skirts and my make up when going out, but if you look like that all the time, who are you impressing on a night out? Women aren't becoming men, we're liberating ourselves!

But would you consider a man who liked to keep his skin nice, maybe even wear makeup, hell - maybe even wear skirts occasionally to be any more odd than a woman who wished to do so?

I'm not actually that masculine, nor am I anywhere near a man in a female body. I have male friends, and I often notice the differences in how we think. In the same vein, I also don't think like a lot of females, but I mesh with more of them than with males.

Also, I never said anything about being more interested in myself or a career (I am insufferably lazy, actually), and I care deeply for my friends and family. I do however, have no interest in sex, and therefore no interesting in MAKING myself desirable.

But you're not very attractive either, you're just one of the guys, you might have alot of friends, but, no offense intended, I personally doubt that they see you as an attaractive person, the most likely possibility is that they see you as just one of the guys and treat you like one of the guys. (I don't know you're friends, I'm basing my assumptions off of my personal experiences, not any real knowledge of your personal situation, so please do not be offended.)

Well, I am similar. I shave my legs only when necessary or they start to itch too much. I had short hair for quite a while (currently growing it out - it kind of cycles). I rarely wear skirts and wear very little, if any makeup.

With many of my guy friends, maybe I am just one of the guys, although most of my hetero male friends have expressed some degree of attraction to me at different points. According to my boyfriend of nearly 4 years, I am the perfect female. =)

Nice to see the Feminine Mystique is alive and well. Some people seem to think it doesn't exist in the wild, but only in captivity.

Now, let's see if we can find some Red Scare!

Actually, I didn't say that second quote. I believe it would rightfully be attributed to Miehm.

I'd have to disagree with your boyfriend, :p but it is good that he believes it. ;) I'd have to insist that my wife is the perfect female or at least the closest approximation that exists this side of Heaven.

Yes, you are becoming a man. *lol*

But look on the bright side. Dressing up like a woman will be a rare treat for you. Even if you don't make a habit of being 'girly', at least try it every once in awhile. It'll make you feel good about yourself.

(a) What does "dressing up like a woman" mean?

(b) I do traditionally "girly" things when I feel like it, and leave them out when I don't.

(c) Why would I have to meet your notion of "dressing up like a woman" to feel good about myself?

This post is rather true. Though of course most of the derision would probably come from men.
Not at all, as Tink's thread "Are men becoming women?" proved.

The definition of a woman lies between two things: her legs. Daggum, buy an anatomy textbook. The human female, no matter how she appears, is a female for one reason. To quote the Webster Dictionary, it is to be the sex that bears young or produces eggs. Women are the only ones that can have babies. Almost all female/male differentiations come from this defining fact. Procreation, being the natural goal of a species, plays a major role in cultural development. The deemphasizing of procreation as a goal of society is a major reason for the current lowering of the divide between the sexes, as it makes men and women more inately equal in purpose and abilities. I hope y'all understand that.

How does "you can have babies" translate into "you should wear frilly dresses, makeup, and panty hose - and you should shave your legs every day"?

Meanwhile, I don't see how procreation has been deemphasized. It's all I can do to wait until I am better prepared to do so.

I certainly don't disagree.

But would you consider a man who liked to keep his skin nice, maybe even wear makeup, hell - maybe even wear skirts occasionally to be any more odd than a woman who wished to do so?

Certainly not, I encourage my husband to use skin care products, but he thinks they make him a pussy. Men need to take care of their skin just as much as women do, I think the shaving rash they sometimes get looks quite painful and not very attractive, products help

hear hear

A lady friend of mine gets annoyed at me because supposedly I'm allowed to scratch myself in public, but she can't (I don't, but hey...)

She was very happy earlier today when she got inside my dorm room and gave herself a quick scratch. Was funny as heck.

Wow. People actually hold off scratching an itch just because they're female? That's different... I mean, if you're that worried about image, you can just be discrete. It's not that big a deal. Iiiinteresting...

isn't it horrible? we may even reach a point where people dress and groom themselves based on their personality and individual comfort level, rather than adjusting their appearance to conform to traditional gender roles!

Because we all know personal experiences constitute proof
Honestly if a woman is beautifull no amount of clothing will change that (and if she has a great personality that makes things 10 times better) and that cant be hidden behind the outer shell

Ahhhhh...I'm pretty sure she wouldn't be 'one of the guys,' because she's...she.

Well, if women aren't spontaneously sprouting and losing as necessary to genetically morph into men, I think it's safe to say that women aren't becoming men.

My god, I hope not.

I can't believe that this is even an issue. I have short hair, don't shave my legs, and love to wear guys cologne & deodorant) and baggy clothes (unless I'm going out to the club, though I do wear a ton of makeup. :P (I look like shit without it) And I'm not a lesbian, I'm just ME.

A man is not my ideal partner, I do not want to go out with a woman who looks like a man, female bodybuilders for example are very scary and very masculine, they are not attractive, if I wanted to marry one of the guys I'd marry one of the guys, not a woman, if a woan looks like a guy she's not likely to have a very successful love life.
This reminds me of an episode of "whose line is it anyway?", where this guest star came and she was so goddamn built, she had gigantic relief muscles.

That was a funny episode, they did some dance, and in the end, a male host jumped in her arms. Then, after she left(!), they were making fun of her:
"Honey, what time do YOU think I should be home?"
and so on.

It was a little bit mean, but very funny though

I don't think women feel the need to conform any more. We work in the same environments as men - I'm in the electronic industry - why should we not enjoy the same comforts as men - short hair is much easier to manage, shaving of legs causes ingrowing hairs and waxing is so painful, pants eliminate sweaty thigh chaffing. I get dressed up in my little skirts and my make up when going out, but if you look like that all the time, who are you impressing on a night out? Women aren't becoming men, we're liberating ourselves!
Hey, women created all those fancy things anyway(long hair, nails, etc). IT's your fault you suffered! notice how a woman has to pick out a stand out dress for an official party, but all men dress alike.
Another point for the men (YEA!!!)

No... not unless men who get manicures and take care to keep their hair trimmed neatly and dress well are becoming women.
Half the guys in our school use hand lotion and so forth. they share too. ( I am part of the other half). Anyway, the biggest reaction to that, was from the girls, who complained that all men are becoming women and there is more competition to them. It was all fun though, they weren't too serious

:D Go Bottle!

Go Bottle, indeed!

I dress however I want. If I feel comfortable in certain clothes, I'll wear them, regardless of how they look (they have to be clean, though!). And, I feel better when my hair isn't brushed/combed, so I go with the "messy" look.

It really pisses my dad off, and I like that! I just wanna be me.
