No decision yet. :)

I think three days would be a likely minimum time period for this decision to be made. Today might be seen as a bit hasty.

You can't rush these things. One conclave ran for almost 3 years!

One thing about Papal elections, you can't predict the result.
Makes them more exciting!

What's with that smoke signal stuff? Why can't they just fit a big electronic message board to the side of the building and tell people what's going on with that instead?

You're talking about the Roman Catholic Church.

Considering the past life-span of earlier popes, what would they call the conclave if the new pope were to die within the year? Conclave 2005: Redux?

Maybe you're right...

...maybe the next pope should be someone younger than usual, with some sort of... I don't know, remotely modern outlook on the world? The chances of that happening are slim, of course...

We had two in 1978, one in August (Pope John Paul I) and October (Pope John Paul II).

Just to note Pope John Paul I and Pope John Paul II are the only Popes with TWO word names in the entire history of Catholic Church.

I think that there should be a proper election of a pope!! Some thing like the eurovision, marks for miracels, multiple languages and illegitimate children( we want a human after all!). Also a bonus round-the task at hand would be to design a new pope costume as well as a pope song-something along the lines of 'hail to the cheif'. Pray to cheif if you don't I'll have to kill you and so on!!

All things considered, the burning of the ballots is a perfectly modern practice. Even at the CIA, papers are shredded and burnt, just as at the conclave. That's how you ensure secrecy. With all cameras aimed at the chimney, it's just as quick, too.
