Are men becoming women?

Lately I've been noticing an increase in the number of adverts for male beauty products, to start with it made me laugh, now I'm starting to feel slightly disturbed by it. Nowadays you can get moisturiser, anti-wrinkle cream, cream to make you less shiny, cream to make your skin look less tired, make up, all for men! I've always thought that men look better as they get older, wrinkles add character, plus it's all just so girly!

That was basically my point. Are women who don't take care of their skin "masculine"?

Edit: Yeah, the consumerism side is what's wrong, not any screwing up of gender roles. :p

I'm going to age gracefully. Only fools and the insecure try to hide their age. Therefore no age products. They cost a fortune anyway.

Marketing firms will certainly try and convince men to spend their disposible income more like women do (e.g. on skin perfume) if there's a dollar in it for them. We can be assured of that.

I am SOOOOO happy to hear a woman say that. I thought I was an endangered species of male that refuses to cry at every hug in a movie and didn't need pretty gold highlights in his hair or his hands to be oh so soft. *takes a deep breath* It makes me want to cry with happiness...*sniff*

Not really - it's more likely that 'somebody' tries to conquer a new market and apparenty it works...

BTW: Did you know that beer most likely contains female hormones? Excessive enjoyment creates symptoms of pseudopregnancy in growing a belly and tits! And males lose their natural ability to drive their cars properly...

Men becoming women? No way.

There will always be some members of both sexes that feel a need to prettify themselves.
And, Poettarrarorincoaroac had a point; marketing firms will try to sell things. It's just our economic system at work.
But that doesn't mean that men are becoming feminine, or "becoming women". It's just as likely that this has always been happening, just now everyone's more aware of it.
Men are still fufilling the same gender role they have in the past, and aren't becoming more feminine at all.

On a side note, since I have you all here... does this make my bum look big?

What's so bad about a guy wanting to look attractive for his woman?

Keep in mind I don't put on make up or anything, but I do put on lotion to keep my skin moisturized since I'm full of scars and all that manly stuff.

I also trim what little body hair I have since 1. I don't like it and 2. Most women tend to vomit when they see burly hairy men, or maybe they just vomit when they see me.

I also clip my nails, shave, and shower. Is showering seen as metrosexual these days?

The only thing in society that separates man from woman is the forced appearance. Men are "expected" to be strong, emotionless, and rugged. Women are "expected" to be fragile, pretty and childbearing--these stereotypes are very common in America. Any exeptions to this psychological throwback make the society grumble and scrutinize the questioned peoples. its a sadly pathetic way of society saying "i dont understand, nor do i care".

well scars are sexy so that makes up for the moisturising i guess.

trimming body hair is ok, shaving (except on the face) and waxing is where it starts to get too much.

As for showering, keep it up, that's perfectly ok!

If your woman demands it of you, or strongly prefers it, then most would agree that nothing is wrong with more-exhaustive-than-average grooming practices. I think most choose women that don't demand this, though.

I use a facial cleanser, skin lotion and a facial aftershave balm (which is basically lotion for the face). Trim body hair / but never shave, and that's only once in a while when I think anything starts looking crazy. And you know, shaving anything but my face is far too much work for me, and it comes back worse. I'm somewhat concious about my appearance and dress, but I don't consider myself a metrosexual.

I mean, hey, Elvis was concious about his appearance and dress. He didn't seem to get that bad of a deal.

My woman doesn't demand it from me, but I do pay attention to what women like and seeing my woman happy makes me happy. By the way, women don't wax because it feels good, they do it pretty much for us.

I sure as hell won't wax, or start plucking one or two excessive eye brows. I just like keeping my body a little maintained, women seem to like the dedication I put into it.

Bullshit! I called it. Women do not wax because of me. I have never asked a woman to wax her body. I never will. *shivers* Women do it because they think it looks sexy. lmao, yeah right. Women do all that stuff to instinctively attract men. Why do women wear high heels, well it's not to be eye to eye with me, it's to make their legs look longer and their asses firmer.

By the way, I am all for a woman's ass looking firmer, tighter etc. etc.

Meh. If men are becoming women, I'm not one of them. All I need is some water, a bar of old-fashioned soap and a razor and I'm set. Combing your hair with your fingers, of course, once a day is mandatory. No combs for me. None of that perfume stuff, either. I prefer to just smell of nothing, but aftershave is as close as I'll get to being scented.

If women don't like that I have stubble instead of baby-soft skin, screw them. There's no way in hell that I'm plastering as many chemicals on as they do. I don't want to have to chisel my face off every night. It might well look good (though, I don't think so), but I can't imagine it is any good for your health. Before you say anything about women doing it for me, I'm not a big fan of women who are plastered in make up and stuff. Shower 'n shave, that's all they need to do so far as I'm concerned. Blue skin around your eyes and bright pink lips just isn't natural, I tell you... And not being able to breathe for all the perfume isn't particularly pleasant.

A little bit of exercise and healthy eating for both genders would be far more beneficial than all these chemicals, I might add. I feel pretty weak if I don't at least do 40-odd press-ups (and preferably some jogging) when I first wake up.

Well I don't moisturize, I don't know. Is putting lotion seen as moisturizing? I just put some on my joints, arms, chest, abs and so forth. I don't dip myself in a tub of moisturizing cream though, that takes away from my video game time.

It is a bit of dedication, you're just looking to further the well being of your body a little. There's nothing wrong with that.

There at least two explanations for this if it is a real change. Something in the environment (e.g., toxin, pollution) is changing hormone levels in human males shifting their preferences slightly toward a feminine side. Alternatively, there may be sexual selection occuring whereby females prefer to mate with males who are more willing to invest in children (a slightly more feminine trait due to female mammalian ancestral adaptations; e.g., hormones needed for internal gestation and breast milk investment is a mammalian female adaptation). Females may benefit from mating with males who show indicators of feminine qualities because they (the male mate) are more likely (on average) to invest in children. This would give mothers a bit of a relief of the massive amount of parental investment they give because they are female mammals and may explain female choice for feminine males.

Then again maybe the whole thing is entirely socialized (i.e., determined by the social environment) and has nothing to do with hormones, brain and behavior. What confuses me about the socialization argument is that feminist scholars tell us that we socialize boys to be more masculine and if they are becoming for feminized then this would be the opposite effect.

On a related issue go vote for Saint Lucius Malfoy's UN proposal (I have friends in that Nation and the deadline is Friday) if you are a UN delegate (see proposal reprinted below):

Right to Learn about Evolution

In honor of the late Pope Maximus Aquinas V of the Holy Empire of Saint Lucius Malfoy we propose the United Nations endorse the idea that the teaching and learning of evolutionary theory is a fundamental human right. Our dearly departed Pope endorsed the theory of evolution as “more than a hypothesis” in his speech to the Saint Lucius Malfoy Pontifical Science Academy on December 25, 2003. A paraphrased excerpt from the Pope’s speech is below (it was published in the Annual Journal of Royal Anthropological Society: New Brunswick: United Free Press of Saint Lucius Malfoy, Volume 1, No. 1 January 2004):

“My faithful parishioners I want you to know that God would not be so malevolent as to plant evidence for an ancient Earth of approximately 3.5 billion years. The splendor and study of natural variation should be enjoyed by all children.”

The Holy Empire of Saint Lucius Malfoy believes that freedom to teach and learn is a basic pathway toward a healthier and more peaceful co-existence between nations.

It is not the intention of this proposal to enforce a curriculum upon nations which have varied cultural and societal tastes. However the United Nations must collectively discourage the suppression of this grand unifying theme called evolutionary theory. Teachers of the idea should also be free from imprisonment and persecution.

The theory connects all living things great and small. Humans can ill afford to construct artificial conceptual boundaries between themselves and the natural world. Environmentally sustainable activities may also be furthered by endorsing this "Right to learn about evolution" proposal as future generations may better understand how and why we are dependent upon the natural environment. Such understanding may be a first step toward preventing further destruction of our planet from selfish human endeavors.

pax vobiscum - peace be with you

What confuses me about the socialization argument is that feminist scholars tell us that we socialize boys to be more masculine and if they are becoming for feminized then this would be the opposite effect.

I think it's more to do with corporations than changes in society. Or rather, corporations cause the changes in society. Companies have this incredible knack of dictating what's 'cool', what's 'attractive' and whatnot, getting people to believe that their lives will be enriched if they buy certain products, and then charge the Earth for them. The biggest example is popular culture. That must be the greatest example of corporate innovation I've ever seen. It's truly brilliant. They don't even have to listen to what their customers want, because they just tell their customers what they want, and how much it will cost. Seriously, I can't commend them enough for that.

Women think that men aren't under any pressure in regards to their appearance. Or at least, some women do. Obviously the one who started this thread must at least have an inkling. The difference is, of course, that some of us just couldn't give a damn about it, so it doesn't bother us :p.

They're just pants! I am one of the last of a dying breed. There are few like me any more. I am a warrior as men are meant to be. All the rest are just sissies.

I use the word cute to describe babies. Like "hey baby, you're cute. Wanna shag?"

Ahh metrosexuality. Male beauty. PFAH! Yes, men are becoming womenly, but all in the name of 'sexual equality.' Which I guess means people will expect me to wear a sanitary napkin soon enough.

I think I'm on the border. I don't own a comb but I have gotten bored and died my hair before. I have tons of scars and I seem to be getting more all the time, but I also own expensive clothes and get a fifty dollar haircut every month (they massage my head). I also hate body hair on men and women so read into that what you want.

I'd like to point out that age cream or special hair products that are supposed to keep you from going bald are too much.

so basically what you are saying is that women should spend thousands of dollars a year to try and prevent a natural thing because people thinks it looks bad, but on men "it adds charactor" women in this country arent allow to grow up! from the age of 17 up, they are supposed to look the same, and sometimes at the age of 15! if women can do all this, then men can too. wanting to look "beautiful" has never been just a woman's thing. that idea is stupid and u are very shallow and closed minded. just grow up and realize that their isnt that much that seperates man from woman, in truth we want the same thing: to be desireable to sexy people of the other sex. its that simple.

nowadays there isn't much that seperates men and women, you're right about that, but I don't think that's a good thing and I think this just makes it worse. I like my men to be men, but that's just me, everyone finds different things attractive in the opposite sex

Fortunately, there is a broad spectrum of men to fit the needs of any woman and a broad spectrum of women to meet the needs of any man (and mix and match). That's the nice thing about humans. Aren't we just lucky?

Men have always primped and preened. It wasn't until WWII that there started to be a strong decline in men doing their best to be pretty.

Just look back throughout history. Men have pretty much always, up until very recently, powdered, beauty spotted, wigged, make-uped, creamed, and performed all manner of beauty things.

Just look at the pics of the Founding Fathers ... wigs, make-up, lace, etc.

I have to agree that all that stuff makes us men into "girlymen". I don't know what "group" decided that having hair on your chest, arms, back, a few wrinkles around your eyes, gray in your beard or hair made you less of a man.

I think all the stuff mentioned makes you less of a man. Then again I have callouses on my hands and a farmers tan, (no I'm not a farmer) I work with my hands and do a lot of manual labor projects. Maybe all that stuff is for those stuck behind a desk types who don't know what "REAL" work is.

I don't think using moisturizing cream and other beauty products makes a male less of a man, anymore that cooking, cleaning, and taking care of kids. I think I'm a man, I play rugby, drink beer, do long canoe trips, work out at the gym, do a manual labour job, and I don't think that when I cook or clean or use moisturizing cream all of a sudden I'm not a man. I don't even see how many people could get by without moisturizing cream, in the winter my skin is so dry and ichy without moisturizing cream I would be uncomfortable all the time. If you don't take care of your body your abandoning your responsibility and I don't see that as manly.

Do most people still care about that whole "manly" crap anyway?

It's all in the upbringing. I tend to be a sterotypical male in many ways. I have never said "now I need to do such and such to be a guy", I just act the way I was taught to. Hopefuly that's the way most folks are, otherwise they aren't being true to themselves.

I have a lengthy deal on this, as it is one of my observations as well, but I'll spare you. The short of it is-someone figured out that they could sell to men the same way that they sold to women. (I blame Maxim. GQ and Details tried but it was Maxim that mixed the formula of undermining confidence/re-enforcing with products and selling to us like we where still 10 (a jet that turns into a razor? C'mon...and look at pick-up ads....)

So, as a market-yes, we are.

Plenty of women looking for a understanding man

I know plenty of jackass "males" that women dont want as well (both extremes like most things tend to be un atractive in the long term)

I'm not talking about men who are understanding. I'm talking about spineless, weak, cowards who won't ever stand up for what they believe, will bend over to take any abuse from anyone, and who have low self-esteem and no self-confidence.

You know, a complete wuss.

Ok we are geting confused ... the origional quote was about being unmanly which does not directly = wuss (uless you are calling all women wusses)

Of manly traits caring is not generaly concidered one ... but there are plenty of women desiring it
So yes someone can be un-manly and desired

A manly man must be caring and strong at the same time.

Not nessisarily can still have a manly man that is not caring unless your deffinition is different then my percived norm (we are not working with an exact deffinition here so there are possible differences)

Well, there isn't much point in being "strong" if it isn't going to be used. Being caring and supporting is a good way to use one's moral strength.

If it isn't something that is part of the overall appeal to women, it isn't "manly". Watching too much sports, or drinking a lot of beer, or driving way too fast all the time isn't "manly".

If a woman observes the behavior, and thinks to herself, "you don't see that every day, and boy would I like a man who was like that", then that's manly.

Could be something as simple as being a man who keeps a clean and organized apartment, or a man who is caring and non-judgmental, etc.

I don't think so, afterall, it was quite commonplace for the ancient egyptian men to wear makeup. Moisturiser isnt totaly about vanity either, if you get realy dry skin, it will itch, flake and sometimes crack and bleed. COnsidering those consequences, I wonder that more men dont use the stuff. The same goes for lip balm (i am NOT talking about lipstick, lipstick is a vain product). A lot of anti wrinkle products incorporate spf 15 at least, and this is good for our men...we dont want them to die of skin cancer now do we?

I think that men should be able to use whatever kind of product they want without feeling like they will be mocked. Our society should be such that people won't discriminate against other people just because they like to make themselves look better by whatever means necessary. That' s what i think that this boils down to.

Whats wrong with a bit of good ole' body hair? ;)

If I wanted to become a woman, I couldn't, cuz' I'd be one rugged ass woman. I get stubble within two hours of shaving. Yeah, and after a week of a shaveless face, I get more facial hair than most guys do in a month.

Narcissism is a different thing all together. Men like that tend to be all around douchebags anyway. what I mean is that if a man wants to make himself look better when he goes out or when he goes out to meet his girlfriend, he should be free to do so without being laughed at.

After a day of playing paintball or surfing I am totally messed up. Mud, sand, and grit all over my face, body and paintball gun. Nothing more satisfying than driving back home with the top off the jeep and the sand sifting away in the wind. Then coming home to take a shower, eat a ton of food, and then crash. As the adrenaline subsides I become a ragdoll unable to move. It's a very peaceful feeling.

Right, sure, um, what? >> Last time I checked, caring how you looked was a good thing.... I mean, personally, I couldn't care less if my clothes clashed worse than horseback riding in the pacific ocean, but most people do. Since when did it become "feminine" to not have wrinkles. And about that men becoming women thing..... ever heard of the Fab 5? ^-^ :fluffle:

Nothing more satisfying than driving back to base with the top off the Hummer and the sand sifting away in the wind.
