Mine weighs in at around 9 gig, although I couldn't tell you how many specific songs there are, one of my housemates decided to "clean house" and ran a program that put em all into alphabetic folders.

Well, I don't keep all my music in the music folder, it's scattered all around my computer and some on a separate harddrive as well.
I'm guessing it's around 8-10 gigs of music, but it might be less. I'm not sure.

I keep Bearshare up (not the best client, but it will actually continue to function if you disable the stupid spyware it comes with) and I also use Azureus!

Risky? Yeah ... but I am a recording musician, a member of ASCAP, and am a loudly outspoken advocate that music should be free. :) I say to Lars, "Bring it on!"

I also don't have a cd burner, so I purchase all of my cds...which makes me old fashioned, I know, but I'm proud of the fact that I'm the only person I know (in RL) who actually owns all the cds of several of my favorite bands.

That said, I've been burning all my cds onto my x-box lately...I love listening to my own damn music when I play video games! :)

It's the way to go!

I get my CD's either from second-hand stores, markets or a discount place that I discovered earlier in the year that's in the inner city. I've picked up some reasonably hard to find stuff there that i've never seen in normal record shops for a mere $10...new CD's here usually cost $20 *minimum*. If all CD's cost that much, I almost wouldn't bother downloading music. Almost ;)

P2P is a generic term describing technologies which allow easy transfer of data from one client to another, either through a central neogotiation server, or through peer/node searching.

Bittorrent is simply one of the protocols which can be described as P2P.

What exactly are the differences between P2P and Bittorent (http://www.bittorent.com/)?

With p2p programs you dl directly from one host and as such when you share one person is uploading from you. This makes it tricky for sharing as if the FBI or the RIAA dl a complete file from your computer they can get a warrant to search your hd for more pirated files. Either that or they send you a nasty letter to stop. (happened to me before)

With Bittorrent you are dl and ul from many different hosts making it harder for said organizations to catch you. Also, with enough seeds and a good connection its possible to dl enormous files very quickly (I got the entire series of Monk in about 3 hours; 3.4 gigabytes). The downside to torrents is that you need to have a library of sites where you can dl the .torrent file. And it consumes a monstrous ammount of bandwidth. (1/3rd of all internet traffic is from bittorrent; many isps also complain that around 5% of their users are taking up around 95% op their bandwidth)

Why thank you. I started with the first version of Napster, and still have the very first song I ever downloaded somewhere. I used to run a Shoutcast radio station, which did requests (I wrote a winamp plugin which auto-downloaded songs as they were requested). Now I mostly download entire albums.

The RIAA hate me. I already have one warning from them, and one from the MPAA too. :( They sent me a letter threatening me with American laws. Silly people.

10, 745 tracks split between a few drives...I think its about 25 GB, but it could be even higher, quite a few of the tracks are in WAV. format (10 X the size of an mp3)

If you like techno, electro, DnB, Gabber or Ragga Jungle, search me on slsk, username: Disinvite. I have almost all the early Underground Resistance tracks from 91 to 96... of course there may be one person on NS besides me who even knows what UR is. :headbang:
