Something I have recently thought about.
I haven't been around as long as a lot of you guys but in my short time on the forums I have learned a couple of things.
I think the one thing that has become most apparent to me is that there are a lot of very angry people in the world. People who hate many things and seem almost obsessed by these things that they hate.
I just can't understand why many people let this anger dominate them so much. They react violently (at least as violently as one can when posting on a forum) to any provocation. Then the mods have to step in and nail them. I don't get it. Why start getting into a fight, why let this anger get the best of you when in the end you will get tagged for it and not accomplish much?
Any thoughts about this? I don't mean this thread to insult or point out anyboy in particular.
I don't know, maybe I am just rambling.

I haven't seen too many threads shut down due to irrational hate-flinging.. Back during the election season there was some frustration and ridicuous statements and whacky accusations and things, but I don't see a whole lot of anger brewing anymore..

yeah, maybe cause the mods are nailing people more recently or something. I haven't seen as much of it recently either.

Ever seen Serial Experiments Lain? Digital communication is still new to even our psyches. It's impersonal. People lose restraint, especially if they are not “old hat” at the forum gig. You know those letters people say you should write when you get angry, and never send? Ever made one, then gone back and read it and discovered that you are a pompous moron? Forms can do that to people. They'll likely never meet any of those they fight with, and since this removes the penalty paid for getting snotty in face-to-face communication, and the guilt trip involved even when you can only hear the other party's voice, people often find that their self control is not as great as they thought when those barriers were in place. Not to mention the fact that it's just one helluva angry world out there.

that makes sense.
if i were insulting someone on a forum, i could think nothing of it. in person, however, i can see the reaction my words are provoking in the person, be it sadness or anger (in which case in person i might have to pay for my insult, or feel guilty).
so the thing you gotta remember on the net is that at the other end of your keyboard is someone else, another real person with feelings, their own views and life, and to treat them with respect.

Should respect be a freely given thing, or should people have to earn it?

put it this way. don't disrespect anyone you don't know - show them a minimal level of respect. of course, respect can still be earned, so respect those who have earned it more (if that makes any sense  )

I just think interacting with people --especially such a wide range of personalities and ideas like on this forum --is a learned skill, and some people haven't got their learning in yet.

Pure Metal – Exactly. That's the root of the “alternate personality while on line” phenomena.
Bodies Without Organs – The standard among civilized people at this time is that one gives someone one does not know a default “medium” amount of respect, and that this person may gain or lose respect as one gets to know them. Note that this system currently allows for a different default based on one's hearsay about that person. A person who the public has enough collective knowledge of to give a higher or lower default we refer to as “famous” or “infamous,” respectively.
Willamena – Learning to overcome the split between one's on line personality and one's real personality is a difficult process, but it can be a very enlightening one. Again, watch “Serial Experiments Lain.”
some are just juvinile in their responses... resorting to name calling because they cannot support their claims/points. (flamers)
others like to get a rise in people... they post the most shocking thing they can to see who bites. (trolls)
a few see the waste of time it is and would ranther make jokes about it. either as a self defense or to get others to lighten up. (spammers)
and what few are left are actual debaters... taking time to research and post without trying to offend
the thing is, one person can be all of these things.
The one thing I gotta learn is not to post in anger.
