Before I let you suggest movies to me, I have to know if you are qualified. So, I am going to list a number of movie titles, and you have to let me know if you've seen it, and liked it or not. In this way, I will be able to tell if your movie-interests mirror mine.

Here is the rating system I'd like you to use.

S (seen it, no S if you haven't)
O (overrated)
G (good to great)
T (terrible)
Just so you don't think this is a test or something, I'll give you my rating of the following movies so you can see for yourself if we match. If they do, you can go ahead and suggest some movies for me to view.

Feel free to do this yourself, so others can make some suggestions to you too!

I still have never managed to make it through the Big Lebowski, and I've tried like six times. :(

How can you not? It's brilliant. The music, the cinematography, the acting. I can't even eat popcorn during it because I'm afraid I'll choke to death watching John Goodman roll down the street with a machine gun shooting up the Dude's car.

I've only seen 4 from your list, and I don't agree on the first 2:

The Titanic (S,G) (Not my favorite, but still a good movie)
The Bourne Identity (S,O,T) - The book was sooooooo much better!!!
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (S,G) (I don't remember much about it, except that I enjoyed it)
Finding Nemo (S,G) (Great animation, story - the whole 9 yards)

I'll recommend some to you anyway:

The Sixth Sense (my all-time favorite)
The Usual Suspects (great, but a bit on the violent side)
The Shawshank Redemption
National Treasure
The Lion King (1, 1-1/2, 2)
Shrek I & II
Ice Age
The Incredibles (great animation & story)
Monsters, Inc.
Spiderman (I've only seen the first one so far)
Harry Potter (all 3)
Dragonfly
The Long Kiss Goodnight
Wagons East (very funny)
Nothing to Lose (very funny)

I'm disappointed at the amount of "Kill Bills" and no one's mentioned Pulp Fiction. I like Kill Bill and all but I'm sorry: it sucks nuts compared to Pulp Fiction and Res Dogs. The plot is far too linear. Chick gets pissed, chick kills a lot of people. Pulp Fiction and Res Dogs were much more finely crafted stories, and they were told in a much more interesting and engaging manner.

I'm not going to bother with the codes: I've seen all of these movies and they all kick ass:

--Pulp Fiction
--Reservoir Dogs
--Snatch
--Lock, Stock, and two Smoking Barrels
--Lord of the Rings [if you havent seen them]
--A Clockwork Orange
--Zulu
--Little Big Man
--Network
--Sin City
--Raising Arizona
--The Count of Monte Cristo
--Clerks

The Titanic (S,O,T) - I think from all the people crying in the movie, I was the only one that cried because she had spent money to watch it.
The Fast and the Furious (S,T) - actually it was funny, but in a bad way; also, you shouldn't tune a Charger like that, even if it's only a 1970 model.
Kill Bill (S,O,T)
Saving Private Ryan (S,O,T)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (S,G)
Finding Nemo (S,G)
Shark Tales (T) - no need to see it with all those pop stars involved
The Colour Purple (S,G)

It's great isn't it? I picked it up for £2-99 in the bargain bin of my local Woolworths. If you loved that, try and get hold of anything from the Troma studios. My personal favorite is "Monster in my Closet". The scene of a newcast declaring that all closets in North America must be destroyed to safeguard the nations children is the best. And of course theres the Toxic Avenger, lovingly known as "TOXIE". Watch what happens whena meek 10 stone weakling falls into a vat of toxic waste and becomes the Toxic Avenger!

Requiem For a Dream - has that been mentioned? Well it's truly minfuck awesome.
Constantine (so what if Keanu has anti-fans - the soundtrack is awesome and so are the effects, and the script is pretty good too! I love the scene where he flips off Satan :D)
Brazil is an AWESOME movie - it's very nineteen eighty four without copying it in any way, and considering they have early-starwars-esque models for special effects those are pretty damn good.
I know a few obscure Soviet movies that are good :P but i doubt you've heard of them.

Shark Tales (T) (again just guessing)
The Colour Purple () (never even heard of it!)
The Last Samurai (S,G)

So, to start, I wanted to reinforce a couple of recommendations

The Princess Bride
The Usual Suspects

Both are fantastic movies, and you have to watch them immediately if you haven't already :D

I'm going to recommend movies I enjoyed at random in hopes of hitting something you haven't already seen. So here goes:

True Lies
Being There
Office Space
Dr. Strangelove
Pirates of the Carribean (I thought this would be horrible)
The Dark Crystal (If you enjoy children's movies)
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Ran
The Thomas Crowne Affair (both the original and the remake)

Ok. That's enough I think. That doesn't qualify as a remotely complete list of my favorite movies, but all were good enough that I've watched them at least twice :).

Personally, I would recommend skipping 'Requiem for a Dream'. It is thoroughly depressing, and takes an astoundingly long time to make the rather obvious point that drugs can screw up your life.

Every thing bad that happens to the main characters is pretty much their own fault, so it's really hard to care. I can't even remember if they died at the end or not.

House of flying daggars want that good. It was just a group of people wandering round a forest alternately killing each other or declaring undying love for each other, depending on what took their fancy at that moment. Impressive fights and all that but nowhere near as good as croucing tiger, hidden dragon.

Sinuhue

Looking at your evaluations of movies, our tastes probably differ (for instance, you called 11-Oscar Titanic and Saving Ryan's Privates -- oops, Saving Private Ryan -- Overrated and Terrible... while to my eye they're two of the best I've ever seen, and I rent nearly everything that comes out).

I love action/drama/romance movies (those that strive to combine all three or at least two of the three, and patriotism in movies generally strikes a powerful chord)

that said, check out these comedies (apologies for those already mentioned)... perhaps we can agree on these:

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Office Space
There's Something About Mary
Blazing Saddles
See No Evil, Hear No Evil
What About Bob
Groundhog Day
Caddy Shack (might be one word - Caddyshack)
Revenge of the Nerds

Well I can only agree with you that the story is rather pointless and depressing. But I love it because it's so damn goodlooking, well edited and has impressive sound design (pretty similar to Pi, same guys behind both movies)
You're right actually, I'm being unfair to 'Requiem for a Dream'. As far as cinematography, editing and sound goes it was fantastic. For me, character and plot are the most important things, but that's just personal preference :).

Ohh! Just to be weird, I want to recommend 'Zardoz' staring Sean Connery. One of the worst movies ever made, but absolutely hilarious. Only watch this if you think you can handle Sean Connery walking around mostly naked for 2 hours.

I am astonished that Sean Connery was ever desperate enough to be in a movie like this

They usually are for me too but I do enjoy several films that just look amazing. One of my favourites is Dreyer's Jean d'Arc which has almost no story what so ever (Falconetti is brilliant as Jean d'Arc). LOTR trilogy has bad script and very hollow characters but it's done so well that I like it.

3 movies I've watched in the last week that I thoroughly recommend:
Midnight Cowboy - One of the best character dramas you'll ever watch, imo. Dustin Hoffman (who I usually can't stand) is absolutely brillant in it and should have won an Oscar easily for his portrayal of the pathetic and pitiful loser, Ratso. As a bit of trivia: The scene where a cab almost hits Hoffman, and he starts yelling and cursing at the Cad driver, "I'm walking here! I'm walking here!". The cab was real, and not part of the scene. Hoffman just stayed in character, as he didn't want to ruin a take. This from a man who would later play Captain Hook in 'Hook'.
America doesn't make movies like this anymore.

The Big Lebowski - A great Cohen brothers comedy, at the top of their game. If you haven't seen it yet, or if you haven't seen it in a while (like myself), do yourself a favour and watch it asap. "Nobody fucks with the Jesus!"
More Trivia: The reason Steve Buscemi's character, Donny, is constantly being told to "Shut the fuck up!" by Walter (John Goodman), is because Buscemi's character in Fargo (1996, the previous Cohen brother's movie) would not shut up.

A very long Engagement - Yet another stylish and sublime movie from Jeunet. Thoroughly enjoyable and emotional movie. More proof, if any needed, that Jeunet is one of the best film-makers around at present.

The Titanic (S,O,T)
The Fast and the Furious (S,T)
Kill Bill (S,G) (boy in seat next to me may have influenced my interpretation)
Saving Private Ryan (S,G)
Finding Nemo (S,G)
The Colour Purple (S,G)

Get ready to be Boyvoiced - I think it's Norwegian, fegging hysterically funny.
Story of Women - French, about an abortionist. I bawled my eyes out.
Boys Don't Cry. Hillary Swank won an oscar for that one, I think. I loved it.

I'm a sucker for Daniel Auteuil films, so if I reccommend The Girl on the Bridge and The Separation, it's 'cause I'm hopelessly biased.

I agree that the film isn't as good as the original book, but I still liked it. True, it wasn't as blackly funny, but it still worked for me, and wasn't too bad an updating of the original seventies setting. As far as everything in it being the main characters' faults ... did you sleep through the whole subplot about the mother getting hooked on medicinal amphetamines?

[NB: The following I have seen and enjoyed immensly]

Battle Royale I & II (though if you have seen I, don't expect the same thing in II).

Oldboy (brilliant, I wasn't aware that Korea had a film industry to speak of, but I found this brilliant. I'm slightly disappointed Hollywood are planning a remake to be released in 2006)

Scum (about a borstal, even though it was made 1979 it hasn't really aged too much).

Made in Britain & The Firm (Two other Alan Clarke films from the 80's, not as good as Scum, but I like them)

Nil by Mouth (Gary Oldman turns his hand to making a film, very good)

The Battle of Algiers (I heard talk of this being remade too, given its subject matter, how a powerful nation state [in this case France] put down a largely terrorist led rebellion in Algeria. Shows that neither side is good or bad in war, especially this war). Interestingly, the Pentagon said this was "required viewing" in relation to the situation in Iraq. Probably the only thing me and the pentagon will agree on :)

Romper Stomper (best way to describe this is the Aussie version of American History X [even though it was made before it iirc and the plot is very different], about skin heads ''defending'' themselves from immigrant. Some people push back though)

America's remaking 'Old Boy'? Oh great. Unless it's directed by Tarrantino, it will be shit. It's an extremely violent movie, btw, to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Why don't ya watch that old Holocaust classic Schindler's List, it's one of the best movies I have ever seen. Although I'm sure you've seen it as well. I liked it because I admired the nationalism of the Jews. It was also a very sad film.
Well I feel old. A movie made in 1993 is called an 'old classic'.

Personally, I found it boring and over-acted, especially the ending with Liam Neeson staggering around crying about how he could have saved more. No need for such melodrama at all, practically ruined the movie.
Spielberg has no idea when it comes to filming in B+W. If he wasn't ripping off some old film noir scene with light playing across the person's face, the other scenes had no added value in being in B+W. It looked simply like they had filmed it in colour and then removed it in post-production.

Personally I thoroughly dislike Hollywood/Oscar's obsession with the Holocaust. If you want to win an Oscar, be thought of as a talented film-maker, serious actor or be forgiven for child-abuse or simply just want to win an Oscar, make a WWII movie showing the Jews being horribly oppressed by the Nazis.
While you're at, be sure to telll all and sundry at every possible instance that we must never forget 6 million Jews died, but at the same time be sure to ignore the fact that over 6 million other people (Gypsies, Poles, Russians, Serbs, Gays, cripples, the retarded etc etc) also died in the concentration camps alongside the Jews. Thus ironically becoming guilty yourself of doing exactly what you are railing against.

How many people here have heard of Jasenovac?
Not many I bet. Reason why? 'Merely' 25 000 Jews died there. Oh, and nearly 100 000 Romas (Gypsies) and over 1 000 000 Serbs. One night (August 29, 1942), the guards had a competition to see who could kill the most prisoners. Father Petar Brzica, a Catholic priest, cut the throats of 1,360 prisoners with a especially designed butcher's knife (called srbosjek or Serb-cutter). Having been proclaimed the prize-winner of the competition, he was dubbed "King of the Cut-throats". A gold watch, a silver service, a roasted suckling pig, and wine were among his rewards. It was probably the most brutal (and the third largest) concentration camp in WWII. Only a few people survived.
Or Kozara, where 220 000 (mainly) Serbs and Romas were killed in one day.
Then there's Zagreb. If you go to the Simon Wiesenthal Centre website, you'll find a small note saying that most of the 11 000 Jews living there were brutally slaughtered during WWII. No mention of the 500 000+ Serbs who were also exterminated during the same time.

Sorry about the rant, but this is just a real bug-bear of mine.

Back to the Movies:
Watch 'Dead Man' by Jim Jarmusch (starring Johnny Depp) or 'Wings of Desire' by Wim Wenders ('Der Himmel über Berlin') to see how powerful movies can look when filmed in B+W by talented persons. There's not one scene in 'Dead Man' that would work in colour.
Speaking of B+W movies, watch 'Casablanca' and 'Citizen Kane', both thoroughly deserving of their reputations as two of the best movies ever made.

Yep, but Tarrantino isn't doing it. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0425320/)

Anyway, it isn't the violence I'm worried about. It is the key point to the plot. The company might think the subject matter is morally repugnant to an American audience (well, its meant to be) and might try and change it.

Possily to a second rate pure action movie with wires, bullet time and all the other bells and whistles.

re: Oldboy. You're right about the plot. I can see American Studios not understanding it at all and altering it horribly, to sanatise it for the American Public. The biggest problem here is that the whole concept just isn't going to translate well into America. The Korean culture is what makes Oldboy disturbingly realistic. That could happen in Korea.
I just read what it says on IMDb, and the director took the job, even though he had never even heard of the Korean movie before. But apparently he liked the concept and had this to say: "I wasn’t interested in remaking the film so much as taking [the concept] and exploring that."
So it will be total total shitola. His last movie was for Disney, for fuck's sake. Yep, a real violent disturbing movie coming up. They'll probably turn the main guy into some sort of action hero and cast Vin Diesel into the role.

Oh, wait. My extreme attempts at sarcasm have failed (Hollywood never manages to underwhelm me). Rumour is that Thomas Jane (was in 'The Punisher') is tipped to be the lead. Oh God. It WILL be an action movie.

As for Jim Jarmusch, I've seen 'Coffee & Cigarettes', 'Ghost Dog' (which was pretty cool) and a couple of others, but they were so long ago, I can't really remember them too well. I find his movies very stylish, but he never seems to be able to finish them properly. The endings are invariably anti-climatic. Maybe that's meant to be the point. I don't know.

Good rant. An issue that deserves a lot of ranting. Unfortunately the Gypsies (and Serbs, gays etc) are "the negroes of Europe" and noone is interested. For example Slovakia oppresses it's Gypsy minority. Everybody knows that and it should have been a reason to block Slovakia from EU but hey, there they are. And now it's even harder to correct these injusticies as "such things can not happen inside EU, that's just impossible". And the same thing is going to happen when Bulgaria and Romania will join EU.

I've never thought about that but you're right. The endings really are anti-climatic. I would say that Jarmusch wants to show that his main characters are antiheroes, life goes on, the film just shows a little piece of the lives of ordinary people (krhm..I guess Ghost dog is not very ordinary..) A typical ending in European films.

The Diamond Hand (Brilliantovaya Ruka) - A guy who gets mistaken for a smuggler by other smugglers and un-knowingly gets diamonds handed over to him... encased in a plaster cast on his broken arm! He also has amusing relationship problems. Humour = doubleplusgood

The Adventures of a Bunch of Italians in Russia (Precluchenia Italiantzov V Rossiye) - Another comedy (the name sounds better in Russian :P) involving an old lady's confession of knowing the location of buried treasure in Russia, and then whispering said location to her granddaughter before expiring. Parts of the conversation are overheard variously by a couple of Ambulance men, a diplomat with a broken leg and a Mafia boss whose wife is having his fourteenth child. Everyone goes off to Russia in search of said treasure, although only the girl has a precise location and even that is cryptic TO THE MAX, so much hilarity ensues.
