i play both genders, but i tend to play male characters more because they tend to be more badass and have better looks. in lots of games they have better powers, too.

on the other hand, i have a straight male friend who plays City of Heroes, always as female characters, and he put it this way: "if i'm going to be looking at an animated butt for 50 levels, i would rather it be a hot female animated butt."

I play Neverwinter Nights online, in a persistant roleplay world. 3 of my 4 characters are female. In RL, I am male. A lot of people ask if I'm gay...which I'm not, just for the record.

I usually just tell them how it can bring a whole new aspect to roleplay to play the opposite gender. How it helps bring the world to life, as most characters are male, as are most players. It makes it more realistic if there are females in the game world. *shrug*

mmo = massive multi player online , NS would fall under this catagory :)

Most of the guys I hang out with play MMOs (and they've gotten me into WOW =( hehe). Anyways, a lot of the guys were in a guild together way back when on Everquest, called Divine Vigilance. When they started making alts (that's alternate characters for all you non-gamers), they realized that all of them were making female alts (for much the same reasons everyone else says - let's stare at a nice female butt), so the alt guild got named the Divine Muffins. =)

I'm not really good enough at WOW to join the new Divine Vigilance, but I get to be a muffin. =)

And I choose female characters - well, just because. I play table-top RPG and I've played male characters and everybody gets all uppity and confused so I figure I'll stick with females from now on.

I often play male characters. No one ever calls me gay.

I find it another one of those weird double standards. Many people seem to think that it's weird for a guy to play a female character, but most feel it acceptable for a woman to play male characters.

um, i don't believe anything about "getting one's jerk on" was said. straight men tend to find the female form pleasing to look at, but that doesn't mean they masturbate every time they see a pleasing female body. a man can enjoy looking at a well-formed set of buttocks without engaging in the act of self-love.

people also don't object when women wear men's clothing, but they throw a fit if a man wears women's clothing. sucks to be a boy! :)

In P'n'P RPGs I tend to play sexless characters... I like playing various automaton (Robots, sentient gunships, Mayan golems, etc.).

Games rarely offer this choice. What I use depends entirely on my mood when making the character. EG in EVE online I will always be female if Gallente, and Always be male if Ammar. I never play Barbarian (Minmatar :p), and Caldari depends on luck.

In CoH however, I tended towards male characters. They just seemed cooler. And you can't beat 'Mr. Fantastic', can you? xD

Yes! I recall a somewhat funny story about that...

My roommate is in the military, and many of his friends are military too. Being a Canadian Scottish regiment, they often wear kilts and think it completely acceptable.

However, one of his buddies got back from tour in Bosnia, and he'd spent his RnR touring some of the Pacific islands. (In civy life he majors in Pacific studies, he's not just a horndog soldier looking for island princessess, although I'm sure that was on his list of activities.) Anyway, the first time he came over, he was draped in what looking like a loose flowing wrap-around toga dress thing. My roommate, one of his best friends, took a long time to pick his jaw up off the floor and he couldn't help himself from making smartass comments about it. To his credit, he didn't refuse to go out in public with his buddy, but it was obvious he wasn't comfortable about it.

And yet I live in t-shirts and jeans. It's hard to remember that just 50 years ago, that would have been frowned on! (At least, it was in the public school my mom attended. Girls had to wear skirts, and they had to be at least calf-length.)

Well I do enjoy playing as a female character due to the whole diffrent world it opens for me when interacting with other players. And I do play as male characters but I do tend to be more friendly as a female one where as a male one I just tk people who piss me off

I don't think it's weird. I have a few male characters, a friend of mine has a large ammount of female characters. Nothing weird there.

Anyone who believes that the characters you play in an mmorpg resemble your IRL stance... is an idiot and has no idea of roleplaying.

Very long time PNP player and GM, only been online RPing for about four years. I'm female and play bout 70% female / 30% male.

I don't consider it weird at all. Over the years the other gamers I've been around tend to fall in that divide ( 70ish their own sex, 30ish the oposite gender) - never met one that played only one sex or the other. ( many did when they first started but after a few years experience, they started branching out )

I have come to the conclusion that if games offer a gender choice then it is likely there will be complete equality or female characters will have a slight edge (even if it is very small)

Yes, but you are actually female, correct? So its not like you are really "playing" the opposite gender. =)

Of course, the actual players tend to be overwhelmingly male, at least on most MMORPGs.

I prefer females myself. Of course, being female myself, I prefer to stay with my gender gaming. However, in everquest, I tend to play males exclusively because of the bias towards females. As a female there, I got a lot more invites to group or was given things because I was female. I guess there were too many horndogs there.

I usually don't play females, but in some games(such as FFXI) females have some advantages.

For example: The Mithra are female-only, yet they can do some of the coolest things(such as thief, ninja, etc). A bunch of guys play them, because that's the only way you can play them!

Also, as said before, if you're going to be looking at an animated butt for 60 levels, why not have it be a female?(especially so in WoW. Of course, I don't think Gnome, Orc, Tauren, or Troll butt is that nice. Or Dwarf.

Humans and Elves = :D . Undead=so so. I mean, they are missing flesh from some limbs...but they still have all the essential "parts".)

its only weird or wrong if you are using it to pass yourself off as actually being female and are forming out-of-game relationships based on being female. especially romantic ones.

Why equal-sex chars?
Take it like this: for instance, you are playing World of Warcraft. You know that you're easily going to spend 100 hours looking at the behind of your character (or, by one fell swoop of the cursor, top, front and side as well). So, if you get all this as starting facts, I believe the question should be: why in the name of all that is holy should you want to look at the behind of an equal-sex character if you're not gay?
I play WoW with a night-elf female druid. I get to say "yeah baby yeah" at least once every 5 minutes. Now that, my friends, is entertainment. That, and the fact I can dress her up anyway I want ;)
And for the record: I've played Diablo II about 80% of the time with the female chars (sorceress, amazon, assassin), and played Neverwinter with females as well. It's just more aesthetically pleasing.
That, or it's a subconscious desire to make woman do what you want and at least pretend you understand them...

People pretend to be elves, dwarves, orcs, gnomes, badgers, etc as well, but no-one complains about that. Why?

people also don't object when women wear men's clothing, but they throw a fit if a man wears women's clothing. sucks to be a boy! :)Cultural bias, Currently in most of the West this is the case. You should go see how many women you can find wearing men's clothing in Iran and what sort of reactions they draw. Even 50 years ago in the West trousers on women were frowned upon and 75 years ago unacceptable of, so it is not an ingrained Western culural trait either, merely the current one.

I used to play table-top roleplaying games a lot, and I calculated once that about 40% of my characters were female (I'm male). Some of my friends felt uncomfortable playing female characters, and never did, while others, like me, had no problem with it. I just find it interesting and amusing, trying to see through fictitious female eyes, and have your character react to situations as you imagine she would. *shrugs*

Although I usually try to make my characters look something like me, for some reason. It just feels right.

It is perfectly normal, about half of my RPing characers in NS and other sites, as well as half of my characters in MMORPG's are female, and the other half are male.

For some reason if I'm ever presented with a choice over what gender my character is in a game, I invariably choose female (I'm male btw ;) ). I'm not a straight forward roleplayer, but I do often find myself getting really involved a game, especially if its an rpg. And I just kinda seem to find female characters easier to... connect with. I generally find the "if i'm going to be looking at an animated butt for 50 levels, i would rather it be a hot female animated butt" excuse that everyone gives to be pretty much a way to avoid just saying "I prefer to play as a girl". It's not a sexual thing at all. Men are just boring to play as. :p
