if I get my point across, what does the spelling/grammar matter?

who cares if I add capitals at the beginnign of a sentence or the proper punctuation at the end.
that I put all the letters i n teh right place or have the proper spacing between sentences?I dont see what the big deal is - why does it drive the grammar nazis so crazy?
does any of that really matter, if you still understand what is being said with absolute certainty?

First off, using correct grammar will make it much easier to actually get your point across.
Secondly, there is a better chance of you being taken seriously if you are grammatically correct.

I dont think it is necessary as long as the point is easily gotten across.
if someone is goign to dismiss my point because they have a problem with the spellign or grammar then that is their problem. it doesnt make my point less valid.

why?
Because grammar nazis wish to control us all through correction of spelling, grammar and, in odd cases, syntax. Failing that, they just want to show they are far more intelligent than the rest of us :p
Yes and no. If you get your point across, I suppose it's fine, But I prefer to have it said correctly. I don't really care that much about grammer, though.

Exactly.
I don't jump on others for incorrect grammar or punctuation. And we all make typos.
But I sometimes cannot understand a point someone is trying to make because of misspelled words and poor grammar.
And the poorly punctuated and uncapitalized posts are often simply too difficult too untangle. If people cannot be bothered to make in their point in something readable, I can't be expected to decipher it.

I generally do not finish reading posts that have very poor grammar, so I don't have the ability to dismiss the points that they make.

Im all for making a point easy to read as well - but if I want to use dashes between sentences to mix it up a little it doesnt make it any harder to read - if i phrase a sentence in the form of a question but I dont use a question mark you can still see how it's phrased and therefore make an educated guess, right?
I'm just posting this in response to all teh people who talk shit because of someones grammar or spelling when they are makign a point and totally disregard their point altogether because of said grammar or spelling. WHen I see it done, I can usually easily understand what the persons point was, and their spellign or grammar doesnt make it any less valid.

We are largely in agreement.
I don't see the point of berating someone for grammatical or spelling errors. I do occasionally see the point in asking for clarification or suggesting that someone whose posts are incomprehensible might try some semblence of grammatical structure and recognizable words. ;)
But so long as a point is clear enough, I care not for rules. Grammar and spelling are simply tools to ease communication. They should not be obstacles.

yeah - I dont see you doing that sorta thing. I respect your ways. If a person cant understands someones point then they should ask for clarification - not be disgusted at the way they mispeleld soemthign and dismiss them altogether.
I have to apologise...I'm one of those people who gets all picky about spelling and grammar. I'm a teacher...I tend to be bad that way. Sometimes it REALLY frickin' annoys me though. If it's just a typo, no problem. However, if it is constant, if it is pervasive, and if it interferes with meaning, then I get irate. If someone is too lazy to type out 'you' (u) and 'are' (r) then : U R an ASS.

If you (the generalized "you", not you specifically... so don't take personal offense) have a valid reason for it (such as English being your second or third language) and I am aware of that fact then I will be inclined to look past any little spelling or grammatical peculiarities and try to get to the heart of the concept that you are trying to express. The same goes for the occasional typo.
On the other hand if English is your native language then I will look on a gross lack of proper spelling or punctuation as an indicator that you are either:
1. Just too bloody lazy to bother making your argument minimally presentable. If you don't care enough to expend the minimal amount of effort required to give your own argument a proper presentation I don't feel all that compelled to spend my valuable time reading and considering it.
2. Too stupid or ignorant to have ever learned how to communicate properly in your own mother tongue, which is another factor that does not exactly recommend your post as being sufficiently valuable to spend my time browsing through for nuggets of wisdom.
So yes, proper spelling and grammar is important.

how about if I am a slow typist and have a bad memory so I gotta get my point down as fast as possible before I forget what I am doing, instead of search for teh right keys to press, or paying attention to placing of letters, to make it presentable to those that I think are a bit anal about somethign that is ultimately unimportant compared to what is (the point). I suppose I could go back and make all teh corections afterwards but thats where the lazyness comes in and the feelign that as long as the point is clearly made then it's good enough.

I wouldn't dismiss their point. Lazy spelling does make them an ass though, in my mind, because only an ass could fumble with the keyboard so much as to type out one letter at a time to represent whole words...picture someone typing with their ass, and you'll get my mental image here:).
Na...I'm being facetious. It bugs me, but I don't make character judgements SOLELY on typing...
hey, Mrs. Sinahue. you said FRICKIN!!! i am telling!!!

I didn't miss it, I ignored it.

Laziness is a reason for not doing it, however I do not consider it an excuse for not doing it. If your post and the point you are making in it is of such piddling importance that it cannot even inspire it's own author to care about it enough to read it over once it has been typed why in the world would I bother to do it?

I would think it would be a problem for people to have a tendency to make it halfway through your posts and then write them off as not worth the effort of continuing to wade through while translating them into a comprehensible form... but again, if you don't care enough about your own arguments to read them over for yourself I'm certainly not going to lose any sleep knowing I didn't read them either.
I'll just make a mental note to skip over your posts in the future and then we should both be perfectly satisfied.

if it was an effort for you to translate my post, I can only feel sorry for your lacking mental capacity. In that light please do skip my posts as I doubt your responses would be worth reading.
