Wisconsin isn't just going to be famous for cheese anymore... apparently its overrun with domestic cats gone wild..

and soon you can go out and shoot the little varmits..

Am I the only one who sees the dark humor in this? Elmer Fudd and Tweety stalking through the woods looking for Sylvester? and Daffy Duck selling the cat out instead of Bugs Bunny? (absurd, but still....)

The possibilities are endless.

I would think PETA should be about ready to have a stroke about now.

It applied to feral cats in rural areas. Not in the suburbs, or downtown Appleton.

Most states have laws allowing feral dogs and cats to be shot on sight in rural areas.

Feral cats-and dogs, for that matter, are vermin. This is just another example of a problem created by irresponsible humans. Pet isnt properly cared for and supervised, so it "runs away" breed with other strays, creating a whole new problem. They carry all sorts of diseases, ticks fleas and parasites.
They do need to be irradicated, but the source of the problem needs to be dealt with too. Having a pet is a responsibility-like having children. There has to be a basic level of knowledge and patience, as well as compassion. I dont feel just anyone should be able to buy a pet. There should be a basic compentancy test. Any idiot can walk into a pet store or respond to an add in the paper, buy a pet and then, when the novelty wears off, let it run off or mistreat it. I despise people like that.

I'm waiting for the law allowing feral people to be shot on sight in rural areas.

Here in Virginia, all you need is a protective order and a concealed handgun permit.

If the person on the protective order shows up on your property, it's hunting season.

I'm with ya on that one.

However, I'm not with ya on the shooting predators that weren't made to be hunted.

I'm all in favor of the animals designed to be food for predators (deer, squirrels, rabbits, birds, etc.), though. It's because humans have hunted the predators our of areas that we end up with certain types of herbivore overpopulation (in Wisconsin's case, deer). I like how the cats keep the actual vermin population down.

I'm afraid that the cats that are the subject of this story may very well eat garbage. If they were all out hunting rats and mice, it wouldnt be so bad. I could actually use them here to help me control the exploding squirrell population.

The ones eating the garbage can't be hunted (with rifles) since they're mostly in cities that have ordinances against firearm discharge in city limits. Believe me, I've wanted to do use a firearm with the red-winged assholes, I mean blackbirds, for a while now.

I can't see that live-trapping and then drowning them as being all that humane, either (which would be legal in many cities if this were to pass). I'd rather see the shooting than that.

The point is, where people see a need to cull the numbers of cats not hunting and living like they were designed to live, you can't hunt them due to other outstanding ordinances. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Why not try Minnesota? It's been legal there for decades. And that from a blue state of all things. Weird.

I dont agree with the trapping and drowning either. In my opinion, there is a responsibility when you kill something-that it should be quick and clean. Someone had also suggested putting the trap in a large plastic bag and inserting a hose from the exhaust of a running car. Too elaborate, kind of goulish.
And I never agreed with poisoning anything-its cruel and you dont know where the thing is going to crawl off and die at.

Smelly chimneys and ventilation shafts.... <shudder>

Yes, if it has to be death, shooting is the way to do it. So, figure out how I can take down the red-winged bastards.... :D

As for me, I hunt the ultimate game... the bearded clam.

It sounds like the red winged black birds are the bane of your existance. Can I ask why?
For me its squirrells. They are so overpopulated here. We have the large garbage cans that the truck picks up with an arm to dump- on garbage day, every can up at the street has holes chewed clear through the top with the vermin all over the place. more than once, I have gone out to throw something in the can and had several scramble out when I opened the lid. And that led me to the best way to cut down their population.

You have to be careful, though. Many a man, and not a few women, have lost everything to the bearded clam.

Just too damn many, and I get sick of them swooping at me, when I'm walking or riding my bike. :)

I have a lot of large crows here- I love them-they "CAW" whenever I come outside, but never swoop or give me a hard time.

With the squirrells- I was watching them scooting in and out of the hole they chewed in my garbage can's lid one day and realized that was the kill zone. I knew they never heard me walk out and didnt run till I opened the lid-the last thing I wanted was a filthy rat with a fluffy tail jumping in my face.
So I walk up to the can, with a 2.5' length of 2X4 poised - tap the side of the can with my foot, and hit a home run when they pop their head out. Its nearly 100% effective, you just dont want the neighbors or kids to see you do it.

Some have gotten in trouble pursuing the balloon knot, which is usually found in the same ecosystem as the bearded clam.

Its the gravitational pull-you're sometimes not aware until its too late. MMmm-now I'm in the mood for rare roast beef for dinner.

It sometime involves getting cleaned up afterwards-if you're squeamish-I wouldnt reccommend it. And I recycle everything. The crows take care of the carcasses.

It's that whole thing about getting the birds into a kill zone of some sort. :(

They're a bit on the maneuverable side, and generally don't get themselves cornered.

Ah well...
