United States Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, had this to say today. edit - rumsfeld said this on april 12th, and this thread was started that day.

"Anything that would delay that or disrupt that as a result of turbulence or incompetence or corruption in government would be unfortunate," Rumsfeld said before he began a round of talks with Iraqi leaders.

Is this the way an appointed government official talks to and about the democratically elected government of a free and independent nation, while that appointed official is in that nation, and in the middle of diplomatic talks?

- OR -

Is this the way the Secretary of War (not a typo or error) of a nation that successfully invaded another nation talks to and about the government (read "regime" - after all, that's what Mr. Bush wanted to change) installed by (or with the "assistance" of) the invading nation?

He's no diplomat, that's for sure. Still, he gave the Iraqis good advice. The former baath party members who are now serving in the military and security forces have experience and know how to get the job done. They shouldn't be shitcanned just because the Shia leadership doesn't like them and wants to give their jobs to friends and relatives.

I agree. There is tremendous danger of the Shia leadership repeating the mistakes of Saddam's regime. Nepotism and favoritism are likely already running rampant. Keeping knowledgeable veterans from the old regime should be considered carefully and balanced with the need to remove the old abusers of power.

One should remember though, that US officials canned the entire government to begin with, not content with removing the head of state, we dismantled every aspect of the state. Rebuilding from sratch like this was our doing.

What's wrong with what he said? Anybody could have said the same exact thing about another country, and perfectly in the right. Problems occuring because of corruption suck.
