like most things it varies from troop to troop. i was lucky. if i had joined a troop in some of the other places i've met scouts from, i would have left after a month, but i stuck around and now im a venturer leader and im a better persson for having been a part of the organisation.

I was an explorer scout for about a year. I think it's a branch of the boy scouts for people who are looking to get experience in their future career. My "troop" used to meet at the American Cyanamid agricultural research facility and hang out with the scientists in the plant biotech department.

Eagle Scout
can somebody explain this please?

over here you can do the following awards;
tracker
explorer
star scout
national scout
chief scout

i assume that eagle scout is something similar but id just like clarification

once you become a venturer or leader the only one of the above awards you wear is the chief scout.

I was a life scout, and almost got my eagle, but I moved, and had a severe change in curriculum school wise, and that made it too difficult to get my eagle, which is sad because I only needed one eagle merit badge, a position in the troop, and my project to finish it. But I'm less than a month away from my 18th birthday so all is lost. And it really does very depending on what the troop you join is like. The troop I was in until recently wasn't terrible, but weren't the best troop I was in. The first troop was awesome we did all sorts of crazy stuff, that I won't go into for many of them were illegal, but the troop I was in they weren't as cool as my first one, but weren't bad. Another troop we ran into was just absurd as to how they were. They would literally march everywhere in step, and do everything in military order. Hell they wouldn't even get in the lake unless all of them could go in. so it really depends on what troop your in.

Aye. I'm improving a learning lab for a day-camp for poor kids. I'll probably be neck deep in PC parts as soon as I get over there lol.

BTW, NOF:
Somehow you managed to troll and flamebait about half a dozen different ethnic groups, and flame two posters directly, all in a thread about cars. That might be a record for NationStates. [DEAT] -Frisbeeteria

How is it physically possible for someone to do that? Please don't tell me it was all on one page... and who would do that?

I'm an Eagle as well.

I got lucky, both of the troops I was in were much more we're-going-to-let-the-boys-do-what-they-want type leadership instead of being anal-retentive. Plus the trips I went on were great!

Im an eagle scout, and I actually stayed with the troop until I left for college instead of leaving right after getting my Eagle. I had a great time in the scouts, even was able to join a BSA group over in England when I lived there, the military community in the area had several troops in England for the dependants. I had a lot of fun going to international jamborees and camps. Even got to go hiking down the Omaha and Utah beaches in Normandy.

our rank system isn't nearly as military as the American one seems to be. here's how ours works;
a troop is made up of up to 4 patrols of 8 each with a patrol leader and an assistant patrol leader. the rest of the scouts in the patrol don't have ranks but sometimes have positions like quarter master. traditionaly the first scout (the tallest usually, due to everyone below pl and apl falling in according to height) tends to be the quarter master. and a 'last scout' is really just a nOOb cause the youngest are usually the shortest.

Eagle '00

Was also Scoutmaster of a local troop for a few months. The parents decided they'd prefer their kids to be irresponsible, but have fun - as opposed to be responsible and have fun...go figure

I was a scout, eventually as a "senior patrol leader" but left to join the CCF instead.

It might be different in the US, but scout meetings paled in comparison to what the Army were doing :)

Speaking to a few people who stayed on into Explorers and Ventures, I guess things got a little better.

I'm a Queen Scout and proud!

My Venture Unit (now Explorer Scouts since the reshuffle) have a fantastic programme.

A typical evening would be to fill a minibus with food & drink, drive up to town (Waterloo Bridge, Strand, etc) to dish out the stuff to any homeless people we encounter (stopping to have some incredibly interesting chats with them - you meet some amazing characters) followed by the rush back to Essex for last orders at the pub :o)

I'm actually a Venture leader. The leader we had had to quit because of work, and because I'm the only one over 18 I got roped into it. I wouldn't have chosen to do it but now I'm glad.
