Which is the best messenger? MSN kicks all of their asses with one hand tied behind its back while jumping on one leg and singing the alphabet backwards while doing backflips on a train falling off a bridge.

Oh yeah, Potaria do you have MSN Messenger?

MSN's alright, but it randomly signs me out all the time, which is a tremendous pain in the ass. All of my friends use AIM, so that's the easiest for me to use. I despise Yahoo, and I've never used ICQ; don't know what it is.

MSN is cool..I usually use AIM though. I have a few good friends who only have Yahoo and I actually like it a lot.

Aim ... superior file transfers plus encryption options (if using something like gaim)

Not to mention that MSN has by FAR more viruses associated with it (massive holes for worms to come through)

When I use AIM I feel like I'm operating some kind of stone-age communications program, I HATE that feeling. The webcam support is sucky for AIM too. MSN owns AIM in the camming area.

Though I have had better luck with yahoo for cam then msn :)

Yahoo has a real sickeningly sucrose, "I'm a bubbly 14-year-old girl" feel to it, in my opinion.

Try using MSN messenger for mac.
It's like MSN messenger for windows 10 years ago, fucking impossible to use, crashes constantly and doesn't support display pictures, video convos, voice convos, animated smilies, any smilie less than 5 years old, or fucking anything except plain text.

iChat (AIM client) is good... but I dont know anybody with AIM.
After searching around for ages, I finally found a half-decent MSN client called Mercury Messenger. It does everything MSN Messenger 7 does, and it works on a mac! It's the best.
But yeah, when it comes to Windows, MSN messenger just doesn't compare to those other, clunky, second rate programs.

Uh... none of the above, my vote goes with Trillian.

Very true ... but I get a lot of the same from msn :-P I personaly prefer gaim with bluecurves theme set with just a hint of transparency :-D
(I can do yahoo msn icq aim ... and a host of other messenger servieses through there) like trillian ... but good :)

I do have to admit though, I've been having trouble with my cam on MSN with trying to connect to certain people. If anyone wants to help me test out a theory add me.

I find that issue on certian types of networks with MSN

AIM is fairly consistant in its working ... as a matter of fact Yahoo has been pretty good to me too
File transfer with msn sucks lol

I like MSN messenger because it supports Japanese text. I use AIM a lot just because I know many people who only use that. The third-party programs like Exodus or Tirillian are probably the best, in my opinion.

From a security standpoint the AIM protocalls have the most potential as well

let's see...i got Trillian and i use ICQ as well as MSN. Simply becaue almost everybody i know uses icq. i got only one MSN-user in my list. and nobody using the other systems. so it would be kinda useless to get them.

ICQ is ancient, and crap. AIM is a terrible protocol, with limited facilities, and an absolute shitload of IM worms which AOL refuses to patch, claiming it'll break services. MSN has it's fair share of worms, but the new version = best IM client. Multiple file transfers, display pics etc. Yahoo is crap, bar voice chat, at which it's the best.

I only used ICQ once and it was annoying crap.

I've been MSN ever since. Much better :D

MSN seems to be the most advanced, and fun to use. Then again, my experiences with anything other than MSN is limited. In general, instant messaging is probably the best/worst idea ever conceived, people are either retarded with their shortenings of words, or are way too open about stuff. But it's way faster than emaiL!

Trillian has to be the best. You can communicate with anyone. Just make one account on each service and it streamlines everything into one neat templete. IM windows are the same for AIM, YIM, MSN and ICQ. It stores passwords and allows multuiple accounts to log on at the same time, IE: Three AIM and 2 MSN accounts all connected at the same time. It's file-sharing capabilites are blah, and I often have trouble getting AIM Chat to work, and have never tried it's video and imaging features but it streamlines communications for an interent junkie like me.

About voice chat:
What I find inherently strange is that one needs a 12GB/s connection to get a shitty, stuttery voice connection over the internet (yes, even with nothing else running), yet a landline phone uses 28.8Kb/s for a voice conversation.
I dont know, it just seems odd that you need such a high speed connection to get a service that only uses 28.8Kbps normally. A video call on my 3G phone uses like 300Kbps... yet a 300Kbps internet connection wouldn't be near fast enough for a decent internet voice conversation.

Yes, yes, I am aware that the difference is the difference between a dedicated network optimised to do one thing and the ugly, clogged network of ISPs and some rusting old microsoft/aol/yahoo/icq server in a cupboard somewhere dealing with all the voice convos...... but whatever.

AIM hardly ever crashes on me. I can't even message people with the new version of MSN. MSN has a lot of fun features, but for stability AIM is the best. It's not as fancy, and it's a bit older.. but it's always up. MSN always had downtime, but AIM never really did, at least not as bad as MSN does. And I don't know why you guys keep on talking about these AIM worms and whatever, because i've never gotten anything from AIM- just attempts from people to try and send me bogus files, and I'm talking real people using something made by Evil Eye software.

MSN is my choice but 90% of my friends are on MSN Aim I absolutly despise with its ugly looks and its annoying need to chime every time you send or recive a messege and of course I am just slightly jaded against any AOL product out there regardless of how good it is or is not

Yahoo is the chat service of choice for slackers looking to kill time on the company dime. They can firewall AIM and MSN, but Yahoo uses dynamic port allocation, and can't be stopped at the firewall.

They need to quit trying to break Trillian, though. Every time they do, Trillian just puts out a patch less than two days later.

Nope, it didnt. ICQ came first and that wasnt even invented until 1996.
