Do you look a certain way yet act another?
Some people would say I dress "gangster"(you can usually find me in my standard outfit: a du-rag, beater, and cargo's), yet I could talk for literally hours about quantum mechanics, cosmology, or nanotechnology. I converse in an intelligent manner devoid of ignorance or Ebonics and I love to read.
Are there any more people out there who look a certain way yet behave in a totally different manner?

Are those people white, and older? Because it's been my perception that any black man who wears a du-rag is automatically a "gangster" by their estimations. Last year, I worked overnight shift at a Kohl's department store, and my boss was a kid named Jason who wore essentially what you're describing. And even though he was a manager at the store and worked 60 hours a week and made in excess of $50,000 a year (at age 21), there were still a bunch of old white women from the midwest making minimum wage for the last 30 years who thought he was a "punk" or a "hoodlum" and a "failure".

I'm gay, but many people think I'm straight. I dress, speak and act straight (except when it comes to sex I guess). I don't try to act this way, I just am and don't bother thinking about it.

Yes, most of them are white. I just wear whatever I find to be comfortable and of course I get discriminated against. It's fun messing with people though.

I get the same thing solely because of my goatee.

Goatees are cool man, I prefer the "Clint Eastwood" look but I've been thinkin about growin one out. As a man with goatee experience would you reccommend it?

Yeah, that's the same for me.
So many people dont believe I'm gay because I dont speak with that horrible accent or prance around like a fairy. I dress nice, with more style than the average bogan, and I speak softly, or so I've been told. So I'm not a man man, but I'm not a queen.

Absolutely. Goatees are clearly the superior form of facial hair.

You ARE a man, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise. You're just a man with a different sexual preference and I see nothing wrong with that at all.
Absolutely. Goatees are clearly the superior form of facial hair.
I shall consider this superior form of facial hair even further once my beard grows out :D .
Not really. Sometimes I do dress up in an out of character way though, and I don't bother to change my behavior.

I almost always wear black, wear eyeliner, and lots of celtic designed jewelry, and if you just took a glance at me you'd probably think I was freaking depressed and sulky all day (granted, I'm not a ray of sunshine, and far from actually being happy, but I'm not exactly crying my eyes out). I act pretty happy and joyful. It's weird, because I get the "Aaaand that's a gothy teenager..." stares going down the street, but everyone who knows me thinks I'm the farthest thing from it. Gets me confused sometimes. o.0

Fucking Goth =P
Nah, I love the Gothic look, I think it's tops. It wasn't until I worked out it was affiliated with all that shitty depressed American angsty teeny crap that it gave me negative connotations.
I remember when I was in Year 7 there was this girl in year 12 who dressed all gothic every day. Full on white make-up with black features, black clothes, everything. She looked great, and had an excellent sense of sarcastic humour. She wasn't a depressive, boring moron. Instead, she would play Marilyn Manson in a finger puppet play, killing Britney Spears with an axe.
I've been told I dress like a priss... does that help? Heh...
I look like a chartered accountant, yet act like an insurance actuary. It drives the chicks crazy.

Goatees rule. Unless it doesn't belong on your head, then you just look goofy.
I look like a biker or a hippie depending on which you know less about. While I have had a motorcycle and do 'inhale,' it's important to remember that it was a '78 Honda CB400 (the least presumptious bike available to man) and I don't think having all of us 'just join hands and love' would do anything other than irratate me.
I kinda look like a rocker, but I listen to jazz and 20th century compositions (which is really pretty hippie, when you get right down to it. Many goatees at the Pharoah Sanders concert and 'smoke' at the Headhunters...).
I don't really know what people expect from me. Sometimes people will say they where afraid of me when they first saw me, but can't understand that anymore. I think if someone does find me scary they're pretty jumpy people.

well being that i have that mixed race thing going on....its gets confusing. many black guys get mad when they see me with my big white longhaired man crew, and call me a sell out. that sucks, and would hurt, except for the fact i have no feelings. i have also been quasi- hassled by white power types when they see/hear. etc. etc.my political and idealogical beliefs, and say "you should be more black" then theres the cherokee family that i have that thinks i should be more intouch with my native roots, instead of , as they see it, being a racist. the fact that i have worn all black and combat boots since, yes the FIFTHgrade- gets me heat from girls who say i dress kind of boyish. thats confusing- i have tons of skirts. i just them with boots. now lets get to the fact that i am 65% tattooed. that just gives me shit from about everyone- who thinks girls shouldnt do that type of thing to themselves . {whatever the hell "that thing " is- i have no clue} many metal heads think i should be GOTHIC, and vice versa. it gets old. very very old.

freak. oh wait. i think that was implied.
i don't dress like anyone in particular. i wear clothes that are comfortable and that i can afford (thrift stores kick ass). i wouldn't exactly group my personality into any particular group either. i've been described as awesome by a bunch o folk, and a faggot by others. i dunno. i have gotten some shit for being in a interracial relationship, but not much. some dumbass little black kid on the train got pissed when i laughed in his face (he hit on my girlfriend and she just ignored him) and threw a condom at me. i'm not sure as to what it was to represent. i showed him the many dozens of condoms that were in my bag (i neglected to unpack them for spring break, as i always have that bag with me, and it's just easier.) and assured him that his gift, intended as an insult, somehow, was thouroughly unneeded, and would have folloowed the object lesson with a light beating had his annoyance persisted, but he fled the train.

Yeah i guess that i do not as much as you though, i just look like a normal girl (jeans and a singlet top) walking around the shopping centre (cept a little less slutty), you wouldn't pick me out as unusual or a nerd but then people who know me understand my more nerdy side... things like coming on here and reading heaps for example... you wouldn't pick me as the girl taking physics, chem and advanced maths...

i dunno, i have 2 (mutually exclusive) styles of dress: all black, or all beige/cream/brown (yeah its exciting woohoo). the latter goes with a newfound hippie look, and i am a bit of a hippie. the former i generally wear when i'm feeling down and suits my grim outlook on life and metalhead-ness ;)
unfortunatley i feel too... pleasant in my new hippie attire. i partly wear the black stuff in an attempt not to be seen, but in these new clothes people look at me and it freaks me out :(

I like black clothing, just not in the extreme. I don't wear the make-up or anything, But black is the only colour I wear. I'm a nice and polite guy too...
YES!
This drives everyone who knows me nuts. Since I first got radical politically, I started dressing very conservatively. It makes people lower their guard around me. One friend described me as a lioness in the grass, swishing my tail around to draw attention away from the fact that I had my claws out and ready. Plus, I look ridiculously young. I recently took a driver's ed course (yeah, I was a decade late in getting my licence), and the kids there thought I was seventeen. (needless to say, it may have been false flattery, but I bought them all milkshakes anyway:)) So, young looking, in conservative clothes....no one suspects I am ready to pounce at any second! Even other lefties dismiss me because I'm not 'anarchist looking'. *shrugs* They don't mind it when I use my inoffensive appearante to bust 'em out of custody after illegally eating their ballots during a federal election:)

Speaking as a white guy from a working class family/upbringing, you don't have to be a minority per say to get old white folk nervous. I still dress like the typical metal head/biker but I've trimmed the beard and shaved my head (male pattern baldness). I have had whole families get out of my way in malls gotten sh!tty looks from clerks and followed by both security and police.
Now with the slightly more presentable appearence, I get "Are you a SKINHEAD"? A black jacket and a bald head and suddenly younger people think youre the second coming of Hitler. That's the one I jest don't understand.

I have a style that vexes many, combining several unusual styles into one blend of complex flavour. Take an engineering technologist, then mix in snowboarding style for the winter, wakeboarding fashion and surf culture for the summer, a dash of funk and retro in between and just a dash of country for nostalgia (born and raised) and you have a very individualistic style that serves only to confuse peoples preconceived perceptions.
Since I dress up on occasion, wearing a suit and tie etc, it only compunds the problem. The same people that are willing to greet and meet me at functions get bizzare looks on their faces when I extend my hand to shake theirs and a thick leather wrist cuff exposes itself from under the folds of my crisp white dress shirt.
For some reason, people are quick to associate a certain incapacity for intelligence with whatever sub-culture they assume Im from - and so I have to prove my worth beyond recommendation by my peers.
That is, despite the fact that I am rather well established in my end of the industry, and have only ever been talked to with the utmost of respect and high regard in situations where people cannot see me to define my credibility by my youth and appearance. This goes for all people too - whether they be male, female, white, black, asian, purple or blue... all people that is, that are around 35 plus. Age seems to be the real defining factor here.
