60s: The Who
70s: The Who
80s: Warren Zevon
90s: OAR
00s: You're joking, right?
The more I listen to Led Zeppelin, the less I like them. They're not bad: all musicians in the band are in fact technically proficient, but the songwriting as a general rule [I'm talking the music here, but not so much the words per se] is subpar. It's all starting to sound the same to me; what with the driving guitar parts and John Bonham's unmistakable yet predictable drumming. That and Robert Plant posed off Daltrey so much its nowhere near funny.

Their best albums in my opinion Suffer and No Control were both in the late 80s anyway.

60s: Stones and Jimi. Toss up really.
70s: Rock->Floyd until '73. Miles Davis until '75. U2 and Police until 80. Late 70s->early 80s. Talking heads.
80s: U2 until '83. Talking heads, The Cure. Prince.
90s: Radiohead, Medeski Martin and Wood, The Dismemberment Plan, Nirvana
00s: Lake Trout, Radiohead, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, The Mars Volta, The Postal Service, Blackalicious.
Edit: Of course the sad thing is that most modern rock bands are basically covering U2 and Police of the late 70s and early 80s. The mars volta is basically a proggy throwback to middle zepplin. You take what you can get. :/

The Mars Volta incorporates so many diffrent styles of music I think it's kind of foolish to say that they are just a throwback of Led Zepplin.

We're going by the decade they formed in, right?
60s: Led Zeppelin
70s: Rush
80s: Primus
90s: Radiohead, honorable mention for Godspeed You Black Emperor
00s: I'd laugh at this, but some very good post-rock bands have come out in the last few years. Explosions in the Sky, 65 Days of Static.

1960s
The Beatles
1970s
David Bowie
1980s
Violent Femmes (?)
1990s
Beck
2000s
Modest Mouse
Well, I'm only been a part of the 90s and the 00s, *giggles a bit*, but I have been exposed to a lot of 70s and 80s rock, via my dad's hard rock/heavy metal obsession. I'll just go with the 90s and 00s.
1990s-
At the time, my fave was crappy stuff like Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys.
NOW my fave 90s stuff is definitely Garbage.
00s-
Evanescence, WITHOUT A DOUBT!

My knowledge doesn't go that far back but:
40s Frank Sinatra
50s Don Maclean [so what if he only had one hit, it was brilliant. Good stage show too, if you believe my grandad
60s hard, Doors vs Led Zep but too many others to count
70s Queen
80s The Clash, Def Leppard, Guns 'n' Roses if they count [formed 87, first album iirc Oct 89
90s G'n'R [see above], Oasis, Beautiful South
00s so far probably The Darkness, honourable mention to Scissor Sisters
Red Hot Chili Peppers could be 80s [founded 84] 90s [current lineup, first real hit] or 00s [hit mainstream properly, big hits] so just generally good.
