... weathermen!
Long story short: this is cherry blossom season in Japan. That means picnics under the flowering trees, with large amounts of alcohol. I had one planned for today, which is supposed to be the local peak of the blossoms. So Thursday afternoon, my buddy calls and says the weather report looks bad. I keep up on the developing forecasts through Friday evening. They get worse, so I push the picnic back to next Sunday. Last night's NHK (Japan's national TV network) weather forecast says 80% chance of rain. I feel justified and happy.
Until I woke up this morning. Beautiful sunny sky without a cloud in sight.
I WANT MY RAIN!!!! If it doesn't &$#^@ing rain this afternoon, I'm getting out my official ju-ju stick and I'm gonna hex that weatherman!

You can't declare a jihad on everything that pissed you off.
...You must submit an application first.
Ya know what?
Give the weatherman a break...

Oh, ok. If you insist. This (http://web.archive.org/web/20010803032048/http://ymusa.org/northeast/#JIHAD%20CAMP%20APPLICATION%20FORM) is the proper application form, isn't it?

In order to attain peace, ther emust be no distraction. In order for there to be no distraction, there must be no people. In order to attain peace, there must be no people. Therefore, all people must die.

Why do people instantly think of a bloody violent war when they hear the word Jihad?

Why do people instantly think of a bloody violent war when they hear the word Jihad?
Because the word itself is often pronounced with such enthusiastic hatred that it makes people shite their pants - unless those people are Americans, in which case they grab their guns ;) In both cases, the result is often a bloody mess... :p

Why do people instantly think of a bloody violent war when they hear the word Jihad?
Maybe because that's the very definition?
Jihad does mean "holy war" after all, and those tend to be the most bloody and violent.

"Struggle" or "holy war", or "bloody mess" - it's all in the eye of the beholder

You have to realize that a Jihad is a struggle against something, often thought of war, but it is not in any way a holy war. Jihads are struggles and are split by greater and lesser Jihad. The lesser Jihad being a struggle against a force to improve many peoples life. A greater Jihad is a struggle within yourself to improve yourself.

Depends on whether you go by the common usage or a strict Arabic definition.
Jihad \Ji*had"\, Jehad \Je*had"\, n. [Ar. jih[=a]d.] (Moham.)
A religious war against infidels or Mohammedan heretics; also, any bitter war or crusade for a principle or belief.
http://dict.die.net/jihad/
ji·had also je·had (jĭ-häd') pronunciation
n.
1. A Muslim holy war or spiritual struggle against infidels.
2. A crusade or struggle: “The war against smoking is turning into a jihad against people who smoke” (Fortune).

Any site that uses the word 'Mohammaden' is not a valid site. Jihad means 'struggle'. Qitar means 'war'. There's a huge difference. Jihad doesn't mean war. Sure, war is a part of Jihad but that warfare is not the sole meaning. The word actually means struggle or to do everything in one's power to realize one's goal. Jihad is commonly used as non-violent protest. It can also be an inner war. A struggling alchoholic may want to give up drinking and it would be very difficult. Therefore he is performing Jihad...

... weathermen!
I believe a scientific survey showed that although weathermen were able to predict tomorrow's weather with something like an 80% chance of accuracy, just saying 'it'll be pretty much like it was today' gives something like a 60% chance of accuracy. Make of that what you will.
the only thing annoying i find is when i'm trying to watch something and they spend 10 minutes talking about a weather system over and over and over. Come on, i'm trying to watch the Simpsons!
