It ought to be that living recipients of the medal of honor are exempt from state and federal income taxes (and everything else but sales tax, which would be tricky).
A side effect of this might be that medal of honor winners could become a happy tax shelter for very wealthy heiresses.

Why? Isn't the medal itself honor enough?

What would an added perk hurt?
Besides, i think the soviets entitled winners of the Hero of the Soviet Union order to a hefty discount on everything they bought for the rest of their lives.

So you think that we need to bribe our soldiers to commit heroic acts?

How many people in the military join it to get money for college, job skills etc.
Be realistic.

Quite the opposite; I think our soldiers ought to recieve substantial benefits for their acts. It's not as if Nobby Peters is gong to be hiding behind a wall from the Hun thinking 'Oh, I'll just dash across this courtyard and stick dynamite charges to those three German tanks there, that'll get me ciggies on the cheap!", now is it?
The medals various nations award, such as the Victoria Cross and Medal of Honor, are awards of the absolute highest calibre. They are probably the finest things Humans can award other Humans with. But I don't see any harm in giving these people a break - if they've done enough to get such a medal, they've done more than their share for the country.

it would no more be an incentive than the death penalty is a deterrent. in the heat of action no one is going to think of the reward instead of the exremely high likelihood of dying.
once youve shown yourself to be one of the finest human being to ever serve his/her country, you should get as much recognition as possible. in a capitalist society money talks. if we really want to honor someone we "put our money where our mouths are"
