I have been watching coverage of the royal wedding and the guests arriving for the reception. What is the fascination that English women have with hats? Most of the ones I am seeing can only be described as " ". I'm looking at one right now that looks like she has branches sprouting from her head...and it's one of the more attractive ones.

I always wear a hat with this adorable little fellow on it:

Doesn't help, but he's so cool...Fiat Slug...okay...

When you're old school upperclass enough to show up to the Pope funeral, then status ranking like hats die off slowly, I guess...and there where only so many hats they where going to be able to come up with before they had to resort to antlers...

I never wear a hat...my hair is too curly and I don't like the feeling of something perching on my head. But when I look at most of these hats, I have to ask "What were you thinking?" It's easy to find a hat that is flattering and attractive. Why do they insist on wearing these creations of bad taste?

And to think, all those old money types have the guts to say the new rich have no taste.

No idea why they do it, seems to be an English thing, don't mix too much with 'properly English' (ie from non immigrant families) too much.

It's only majorly posh upperclass women. Most english women would never wear hats except possibly to weddings and even that is dying out. Luckily.

It's a tradition born from showing that you have money (most women wore similar clothing, but expressed themselves in their headwear) and from it being necessary to have your head covered in church, (hence mostly seen at weddings/funerals etc.

And to answer another question, hats can cost thousands of pounds......

Me?
Can't stand anything on my head, it bugs the hell out of me.....

They're trying to scare away the demons and evil spirits. The College of Cardinals is busy preparing to elect a new Pope and they don't have time to exorcise demons.

It's easy to explain. English women wear hats to take attention away from their choppers. Case in point, Charles' new bride. (http://img.blesk.cz/blesk/imgdb/original/phpb77gdf.jpg)

This clearly has to be the case.
