Media and political influence

Due to the claims that websites ranging from anarchist to neo-nazi being described as "fair", "balanced, "unbiased", etc. and also due to conversations like the following:
Person A <insert source here> is propaganda
Person B no it isnt
Person A Yes it is
etc.

I have decided to ask people where they get their news from (radio, TV, print, and internet), and also where their political beliefs lie. Maybe we can make an official list of how much different sites/shows/papers/stations lean towards different sides

I personally am a bit of an enigma politcally, close to the middle in most things, but on others far to the right

i get most of my news from
Yahoo News (AP+Reuters)
Boston Globe
Local ABC+CBS

please post your information

I don't like the Daily Show very much. The closed captions are messed up and the show isn't (IMO) good enough to watch w/o captions. :p

I mainly read the Times (of London), and watch Channel 4 news or sometimes the BBC. The Times is generally considered to be right of centre but supported Labour at the last election, so isn't dogmatic. Channel 4 news is the most 'political' news in the UK I think, and is a little to the left of centre.

My political leanings are pretty central. At www.politicalcompass.org I scored just about dead centre for economics and about 3 clicks towards libertarian on the other axis.

I do happen to believe that it is possible to produce news that is more or less devoid of bias. Never completely, but more or less. I don't agree with the idea that all news is equally biased and reflects someone's opinion either through actual opinion or through the selection of data. Both factors can make news biased, but not all news is equally so. Facts can never be biased individually, and if they are presented in a balanced way that comes as close as possible to the actual facts the it will clearly be less biased than news that presents all the positive facts, for example.

I'm kinda liberal. My news comes from CNN, BBC, NPR, and the Sunday NY Times for the most part.

Your first statement is true, but the problem lies in sorting out the ones that are fairly even from the purely one-sided arguements. I believe that what you publish portrays a certain opinion or politcal view.

Say for Country X the GNP for 2003 was Y billion dollars, and 2004's GNP was calculated to be only slightly higher than 2003's figure, a news headline could be

ECONOMY REMAINED STEADY
giving the viewpoint of things are staying the same, which is good

or it could be

ECONOMIC GROWTH DISSAPOINTS
which means it should be better than it is

which viewpoint you publish determines who reads it, and in more naive minds, shpaes opinion without critical thought process

<EDIT> I agree that facts can not be biased, but the combination of facts shown, and their context, affect viewpoint

Right, we should get our news from the psychic friends network-or water cooler talk-I bet your mechanic knows whats happening.

Information has to come from somewhere. Theoratically we where all taught critical reading and thinking skills in high school to be able to look at how the information is delivered. Though we should start teaching kids how to read media in general...but then we couldn't control them while they pretend they aren't under control....

Question: Is Control controled by its need to control?
Answer: Yes.

I get most of my news from the Sky News website ( www.sky.com/news )

I generally don't like to read too much into depth on stories because they often blabber to fill the pages, 'America and Britain has invaded Iraq' is already biased enough with the word 'invaded', but it gives me all the information I need. Other wise I prefer to watch channel 4 news like another person said, I feel it's the most fact giving news aswell as entertaining.

Authoritarian Left I think that means....

Thats not what I'm saying, we need to make it clear that the Psychic friends network is not where peopl ego to find accurate news, and neo-nazi radio is not a good source either. Some people accept something like that, but throw a fit if someone mentions FOX news, or ABC, or CNN or other more reliable sources

One of the key words is theoretically, but how many people actually use those skills, not many

teaching kids to be media-literate wouldnt help, especially because media-illiterate adults make descisions for kids

I primarily read the New York Times, which I have to buy at the local kos, or the Lancaster Intelligencer, the local newspaper of my hometown; there are two papers in Lancaster, the Intelligencer and the New Era; the New Era tends to lean right, and the Intelligencer, left. But the bias is only truly visible in the choice of stories and the choice of Opinion columns. And the comic. I hate the comic.

I also read DailyKos.com and lowculture.com. DailyKos, my primary source for political news, is obviously a pro-Democrat website, but while it only reports things which are GENERALLY helpful to the Democrats, it still provides newsbits themselves; for example, I cited Senator Cornyn's words on the House Floor, which I drew form DailyKos; and while DailyKos offered it's own opinion on it, the facts were still there for me to decide on.

lowculture.com is a "liberal" blog, but only insofar as it is concerned with satire, and the easiest targets are the Republicans. ;)

My politics are messy. I'm a libertarian one moment and a socialist the next. I'm socially permissive, but when it comes to economics, I recognize the value of capitalism, but can't ignore the consequences of it, either. So I'm left-wing, but arguably a moderate. I'm not affiliated with any party.

And um yeah. I also get the Age, which is a maistream, non-tabloid paper, although of course it's the usual commercialsed, wishy washy crap.

I gets me news from webloggers und Drudge. I check Fox now and again for an editorial. I refuse to check the New York Times only because the bastards want me to register and I will never, never register for news. NEVER!!!! And don't tell me I can get around it with a program, I know I can and it is still going to a website that requires registration, NEVER!!!!
CNN is boring, sorry, just dull and lifeless. Besides they have that walking cadaver Larry King. That guy scares the hell out of me.
