It was beautiful and very moving! Just shows the beauty of the Latin Mass as well, which is sorely missed.

One of those Cardinals in red will be the next Pope (unless they go elect someone who isn't a Cardinal).

One is Cardinal George Pell, Arch-Bishop of Sydney. However he's probably not the running.

I bribed them. I will be the next pope. Absolutions, half price now at Crazy Pope Joe's bargain bin!

But I really hope it's Cardinal Cormack Murphy O'Connor. He's cool.

Really?! He is a good Cardinal (being my Cardinal and with me living in his diocese area thingy).

True, but Pope Sin I sounds funny. :)

Well, he would change his name wouldn't he.

For Pope he's have to, but he didn't change it when he's a Cardinal. Popular fellar in his home country too.

The last African Pope was in the 5th century, BTW.

Probably didn't turn up either.

A clue to the next pope - Gloria olivæ (according to St Malachy).

=> ”from the glory of the olive”.

Benedictines are OLIVETANS, so maybe a Benedictine Pope?

Only 2 of the 3 voting Cardinals that were present for the 1978 elections will be in attendance! I'm sure that hasn't happened in a VERY long time!

(Hopefully, 2005 won't ALSO be another year of 3 Popes...)

A bit like the Year of 3 Emperors (in Roman history).
It was interesting the Syrians and Iranians turned up too.

Speaking of Popes, I've got a little copper coin minted by Pope Urban VIII (1623-44) in Avignon.

Aren't there other threads about Papal Succession?

Not much probably (due to their bad condition). I bought a pair on eBAY for $US 4.00 from some guy in *Israel*. They weren't made with the best minting quality either.

Because some people dislike the Church and its actions or stances of course. And some believe that doing lots of good does not excuse doing evil - to use a popular parallel: that a doctor that has saved 100s of lives is still not allowed to murder someone.

What constitutes good or evil is down to an individuals moral system. Evil associated with the curch could for instance be the stance on condoms in Africa, which has killed people. One can argue this is because the people there do not obey the abstinance part- but one can also argue that if you know people are going to do that you are still to blame.
Others are the stances on female equality, the stance on homosexuality etc.

Aha. So, a person is responsible for the actions of a group two thousand years old?

Aha. So by that logic, Anne Frank was a criminal because of King Herod. Man, I'm glad I don't live in your world!

"Let he whom is without sin cast the first stone." Calling JP2 a criminal, you may as well flush humanity down the drain.

Dislike? rofl... I'm not going to comment on what I think of this little group. That pope only managed to keep the church in the 13th century, he failed to adapt to the 21st century, failed big time. Thanks to him Africa's dieing of AIDS (using condoms is baaaaaaad, yeah right). Under his rule Germany and Austria have reached new records in people leaving the catholic church. And can anyone blame those people? No.

The reason?

Take the following case which displays how the catholic church is stuck in the 13th century:

A woman, who's teacher for religious education (in areas like Tyrol I call it "brainwashing"), has been suspended from her work for a year three years ago, because she and her husband (who's also a teacher in the same area) had divorced. This one year has turned into three years by now. The catholic diocese refuses to let her work again because her "family envirnoment is not clear". The woman has a boyfriend again, which seems to piss off those oldfashoined farts in the diocese, not to mention that she's divorced and a woman. They're obviously not judging her by her professional qualities.

Btw, her husband has been working since the divorce without any change.

That case made the headlines in the bigger newspapers around here today.

That's your catholic church.

May the pope burn in hell.

Borderline trolling. Regardless of what topic is involved, this will stop.

Now, I'm not sure what kind of topic "Super-power" had in mind when he posted this, but my best guess is that this is a rememberance topic. In which case, debate does not belong here; go use another thread for debate.

After the Pontificate of Benedict XVI, World War III will begin. The Arab nations will threaten and attack the United States; they will threaten, attack, invade and conquer Europe; they will threaten, attack, invade and conquer the northern part of Africa. It is God's will.

roflmao.

When the transfiguration of Jesus was completed, they arose and saw only Jesus. When the initial transfiguration of the Church is accomplished (by A.D. 2040), Christianity will be the dominant religion in Israel and in Jerusalem and in the world. When the transfiguration of the Church on earth is mature (in the mid 25th century A.D.), Christianity will be the only religion on earth. In that future time, everyone on earth will be a Catholic Christian.

double roflmao.

There will be many more Popes between Peter the Roman and the Return of Christ in A.D. 2437.

okay, I have to stop reading now.
