Yay, people!

I've done my Workplace First Aid Cert and I'm doing a Pre-Hospital Emergency Care five day course this month.

This is part of the New Zealand Ambulance Officer qualification and will let me practice as an events medic for St John in Wellington (http://stjohn.org.nz).

If any welly people here head out to a sports game, concert or motor race keep an eye out for me! (Yes, if we hold the V8's I'll be trackside! :D )

I had to use my skills once on a guy who fell and cracked his head, pouring blood all over the pavement. The ambo seemed to like my bandaging but I never found out how the old did after being driven off.

I keep a first aid kit bag stocked in my car, which I loaded up on common items (band aids, aspirin, etc.)... good for most common ailments. I wouldn't do field surgery, though. :)

I worked in a hostel and one of the people there was paralised down one side because of a stroke. Two Christmasses ago he stuffed far too much christmas pudding into his mouth and choked. I tried the heimlicht but it did not work, I tried rubbing hard up the back, supposedly relaxes the muscles, didn't work either. He passed out and hit the ground, I thought he was a gonner, so I stuck my fingers in his mouth and down his throat and removed the blocking cake. Ergh! Thankfully he started breathing again on his own and mouth to mouth wasn't necessary. It's not a plesant prospect having to lock your mouth with some old, fat man with a dirty mustash.

I don't think I'm actually qualified to do anything anymore, but I took a week-long night course in first aid 3 or 4 years ago. I think I can remember most of the stuff we were taught, but whatever certification I had before is now lost and/or expired.

It is a known fact (an alarming and morbidly funny one, imo...) that in emergency situations -- for instance, when someone is injured and prone on the sidewalk -- people tend to just stand there and stare.

So... my hat's off to those with the wherewithal to act in abject/horrific situations.

DIE DIE DIE!

Testing out my newest inventions often cause pain... Like the solar ray I made. THAT was fun. It used a parabolic mirror that then shoots light through 2 magnifying glasses to create a ray that incenerates things.

ha. this is funny. in MORTICIAN SCHOOL- you have to get level 1,2,3 and 4 red cross training. how funny is that? so i can save a life, but i would much rather stick a canula in their abdomen, a needle in their neck, and fill them with poison.

once a guy on the freeway on a motorcycle in front of me got hit. he had no legs, and one arm, and a chest wound the size of his head. i stopped the bleeding (kind of) and massaged his heart for 7 and a half minutes. he died later though. and, yes, his family had me embalm him.

That poll needs to be converted into 'Merican.

How do NREMT certs. EMT-B (I); EMT-Intermediate (II); and EMT-Paramedic (III) stack up against "ambulance operator" and so forth?

That poll needs to be converted into 'Merican...the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) registers emergency medical service (EMS) providers at four levels: First Responder, EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic. Some States, however, do their own certification and use numeric ratings from 1 to 4 to distinguish levels of proficiency.

The lowest-level workers—First Responders—are trained to provide basic emergency medical care because they tend to be the first persons to arrive at the scene of an incident. Many firefighters, police officers, and other emergency workers have this level of training. The EMT-Basic, also known as EMT-1, represents the first component of the emergency medical technician system. An EMT-1 is trained to care for patients at the scene of an accident and while transporting patients by ambulance to the hospital under medical direction. The EMT-1 has the emergency skills to assess a patient’s condition and manage respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies.
The EMT-Intermediate (EMT-2 and EMT-3) has more advanced training that allows the administration of intravenous fluids, the use of manual defibrillators to give lifesaving shocks to a stopped heart, and the application of advanced airway techniques and equipment to assist patients experiencing respiratory emergencies. EMT-Paramedics (EMT-4) provide the most extensive prehospital care. In addition to carrying out the procedures already described, paramedics may administer drugs orally and intravenously, interpret electrocardiograms (EKGs), perform endotracheal intubations, and use monitors and other complex equipment.

For a rough equivilant:

First Responder: High end: " I have a certificate which pretty much trained me to call the ambulance." or low end: "I have a Workplace First Aid Certificate (Approx 2 days training)"
EMT-1 = "I have a Workplace First Aid Certificate (Approx 2 days training)"
EMT-2 = "I have a further/specialist First Aid Certificate (Pre-Hospital care)"
EMT-3 = "I am at Ambulance Officer level"
EMT-4 = "I am at Paramedic level" (Would be "Advanced Paramedic" in NZ)

In NZ anyone at or above "Ambulance Officer" can administer drugs, the higher you go in the quals the more drugs you can administer.

As a teacher, I was required to get first aid certification and, as a parent, I've had to learn how to do everything from slap on a bandage to remove objects from noses to properly give stitches.

From watching my kids, I marvel that any of us survive to adulthood.

I enjoyed it heaps, and also had the incident where I ended up using my skills, so I got into the whole thing.

Now my training is free, being done through St John, as I am volunteering.

Lifesaving at school, and First Aid was provided free through uni. Apparently they thought we'd need to know stuff in case there was an emergency, and people looked to us because we are med students... No point us standing there like stunned mullets not knowing what to do.

^^ In other words a real honest to life Para God has just posted ( that what we in Texas tend to call those lifesavers that have made it up EMT4 )

Here in Texas there are many many volunteer firefighter / ambulance groups that are glad to help people get their levels in return for hours.

and as to war stories...well lets just say that I've pulled people out of the remains of cars that have been hit by a train, and gone over cliffs to get to those at the bottom...

I've also turned around when the lab tech bothered us for the 5th time during surgery and offered her the just amputated leg of an Irish Setter...

Third year is great. Although from semester 2 this year I'm going off to do two full years of an arts degree. The rest of my cohort is doing an advanced medical science degree in that time (or rather, one year of it).

And all I know is that I don't want to be a surgeon. Maybe paediatrics or neuro. Not sure yet.

Mmmm, surgery :). I never really looked into pediatrics much, most of my friends who went on to med school went into pediatrics. I ended up deciding to go into endocrinology.

Are you in an accelerated program?

Perhaps the states do it a bit different. We have the option of going into an accelerated program out of HS (only at certain universites) or going the BA route.

Its 5-7 years, normally...

7 Year Program at USF (http://web.usf.edu/~honors/prospective_students/acc_prog.htm#7year)

UMKC 6 year MD program (http://research.med.umkc.edu/education/default.html)

I did the UMKC 6 year program. I really like the program because of the early clinical experience (you are in the hospital the very 1st week of attendance). Plus, they have an excellent docent system.

Good luck with choosing your field :).

Don't know for Military Medic sorry. Judge an equivilent based on the EMT system if that's what you know best.

I worked at a hospital for a long time. I don't have any degrees or certificates though and I'm not a certified nurse.

I haven't done much first aid, the system is built so that nurses and doctors can be there very quickly. If it was more serious, then we would rush the patient to the emergency ward a few blocks away.
