Goth for me, most certainly. But how 'bout y'all? And by "subculture" I'm refering to the entire experiance, that is the music, the art, the whole, as it were, shebang. Also, this is supposed to be fairly broad: Goth includes Rivethead and Mansonite (yes, I know, Manson isn't "goth"), Gangsta includes Rappa, Gangsta, and whatever you call the ones who listen to Hip-hop instead of rap (hip-hoppas?,) and so on. And when I say "other," I mean those cultures that are completely different from all else: cyberpunk, for example, which is too punk to be goth and too goth to be punk, or Valley Girl (VGs should, by the way, be used as fuel in steam boilers.)

I consider myself unique enough not to belong to a 'sub-culture' per se. However, were it nessecary to define myself in that terminology, I suppose I could define myself as a 'boarder' (ie: Snow/Wake/Surf etc) since my style, though definitely different, most closely remembles that image. I wear the skate shoes, and a lot of my clothing comes from retailers in that industry.

I'm like a turtle - I carry my own subculture with me, wherever I go. On rare occasions, I encounter someone with the same, or more usually, a related subculture, and for a while, my subculture DOUBLES in size! How exciting.
I was the odd one out way back when - not one of the various 'groups' would have me, even the geeks. However, I had a more-or-less even standing with all of them; I just thought it was all rather hilarious at the time. All the imaginary lines and demarkations...and requisite likes and dislikes, heaping praise on heaps of shit, while pointedly ignoring something that appealed to some other group of pigeonholed idiots. Not to mention all the myriad interpersonal politicking and byzantine relationships. It was much easier to chart my own course in the end. Less headache and bullshit to endure.

Other. Metalhead/nerd. There are a suprising number of metal fans in computer science. I have been accused of being goth (the connotation used wasn't one of friendliness) before mostly because almost all the clothes I wear are black (or used to be before they faded to dark grey). That has more to do with colour blindess (easy to find matching colours) than any particular desire to belone to any particular subculture.

... sorry.. I was joking, I don't really type like that, I was just playing the "stupid black man" profile that was set.
Seriously though, all these people trying not to conform, don't realize that conforming is the clothes you wear, or the way you live your life. It's the thoughts and philosophy's.
So by accepting the thought that buying all your clothes from "preppy" stores and such is conforming, they have actually conformed. By accepting the thought process.
While those that buy from the "preppy" stores because they actually like the clothes, and don't read demonic books and go to church, are not conforming. Conforming is accepting the thought of the whole, as long as you do things by your own thought, it's not conforming, even if the others that think as a whole do it. It's all about doing it by your own thought.
Sorry, again not to flame, but the Goths are dead... if they had music, I'm sure it wasn't anything with an electric guitar. By being Goth, you're just accepting the thought of a group, that goths wear leather / chains/ dark stuff.
Also, today's "goths" are, again, forgive me for stereotyping, but they are anti-church. While the true Gothic culture surrounded the church?
Just my two cents.
[Edit: Too elaborate, to be conformist free? Don't accept that conforming exists, and just live your life by free thoughts, don't put yourself into a stereotype of Nazi, skinhead, or goth. You just look goofy and make no sense. Showering everday doesn't make you a conformist.]
[Note: I may be wrong about the timeline for the Goths, I was thinking back, I might have them mixed up with another movement. Haven't had to think of that since years and years ago in school]

I'm a Cyberpunk Beatnik Biker Nerd. Something like that, anyway.
I'm hard to label. I don't say that in some kind of elitist nonconformist way, I'm just far too varied in my interests and activities to sufficiently classify myself.
I don't try to dress any specific way, or go out of my way to act of do anything specific to forge some kind of identity for myself. I just wear whatever's clean, do what I think is fun, and read, watch or listen to the things that interest and pique my curiosity to the point where I can't get enough of it.
If you label me, you negate me. - Søren Kierkegaard
Does this make sense to you (this question also addressed to the author of the thread's question)?
Dersatz, definitions change with time. If you're going to be pedantic, you also have to say that "punks" were actually all prostitutes, because that's what it meant in medieval England. The meaning of 'gothic' now is very different from what it meant 100 years ago, but then, so is the meaning of the word 'queer'. I used the word goth because it most suited my style of dress (black), taste in literature (mervyn peake) and philosophy in general (anti-church), but- as I said, and as I'm sure you probably read in my previous post- I don't actually consider myself to be a goth, I just said that's what I'd be if I had to pick a category.

They're trying to not conform with Official Society. But they conform with each other, true. Counter-cultures and all.
Fortunately there are plenty of actual non-conformists out there.
So by accepting the thought that buying all your clothes from "preppy" stores and such is conforming, they have actually conformed. By accepting the thought process.
Some of us are just cheap and buy whatever looks good, you know.
Preppy is just too damned expensive, and rarely looks good.
However, they're silly, because you can find cheaper clothes that look the same elsewhere.
Sorry, again not to flame, but the Goths are dead... if they had music, I'm sure it wasn't anything with an electric guitar. By being Goth, you're just accepting the thought of a group, that goths wear leather / chains/ dark stuff.
Goth is based on 'gothic novels'. So, yeah, conforming to being spooky-ish. But damn some of those girls are cute in that gear...
Also, today's "goths" are, again, forgive me for stereotyping, but they are anti-church. While the true Gothic culture surrounded the church?
Um.
Do you have any idea how common crosses are in Goth groups?
Goths are quite varied in belief.
Why should they conform to your lack of conforming to non-conformity? Heh.
Some people do things for fun, ya know. I still want to go to a goth club, myself, because I think it would be fun to be surrounded by people in costume, who tend to like to be bitten.
[Note: I may be wrong about the timeline for the Goths, I was thinking back, I might have them mixed up with another movement. Haven't had to think of that since years and years ago in school]
Modern Goths are based on the love of Gothic novels, particularly Horror novels.

Can anyone classify me? I enjoy metal rock, wear relatively trendy clothes with a perchant for neutral colors, red, and black. I am a psychology major. I love to read. I am a fanfiction junkie that loves little kid games like neopets. I have a boyfriend and am a self-proclaimed sex pot. I have mainly male friends and am curious about a great number of things. Any clues? Also, I am beyond an anime junkie

A Stoner. Gods, how did that one get left off?
Me and my mates don't fit anywhere else really. We like metal, but we ain't quite metal heads, we game until 3am but don't have the skillz to be gamers, we love computers but not enough to be nerds, we dress in hoodies because its the only thing warm enough for smoking in a London alleyway, but we also wear leather because it keeps the wind off and we aspire towards Harleys but are never gonna be able to afford them.
Oh, and we get as high as freakin' kites, have an almost pharmaceutical knowledge concerning most recreational narcotics and consider most modern forms of government irrelevant and undesirable.
Yep. Thats us.

I picked nerd because I enjoy academia, but I've also described myself as a hippy-goth; I love the Doors, Cruxshadows, Manson (yes, I know), flowers, meditation, yoga, natural foods, peace, dark creepy things, etc. However, I dress like neither.
It's an odd mix, but somehow I give off both vibes. As in, people can tell within a few minutes of talking with me that I'm either a "hippy" or a "goth". Go figure.

I don't know what I am. What do you call a pot-smoking liberal metalhead ska/punk BMXing geek? Apart from jackass, that is. Ahem.
What sub-culture am I?
I am the one where you don't go around putting a stupid label on yourself and the people around you. Instead, you just accept the the fact that people are people: there are some who are assholes, and there are some who aren't. Judge people on individual merit, and don't say: "She's popular! I hate those damn preppies! Angst angst angst!"
Sadly, there are not very many people who are part of this sub-culture. Oh well.

I am not a nerd, I'm a geek. There is a difference. Nerds are people who study to be smart and get high grades in school. Geeks are just naturally smart so never try and almost always just pass classes because they don't do home work. Then again I'm probably just on the edge of that since I'm the dumbest one of my friends despite having a mensa IQ. Stupid everything.

Other-
None of those categories work for me.
So I've created my own: Literate Elitist
The Literate Elitist is someone who reads all sorts of points of view on the same subject, aiming for balance when forming opinions. They have a broad musical taste, but disdain things that are too popular as beneath them. They perform well academically, and will eventually find themselves in high-paying professional jobs.

I voted other also, I'm a Ferroequinologist. If you must know then look it up.
Subscribing to a "subculture" is a very middle school, immature, and weak concept.
I don't really relate to any one in particular. Rather, I think it's more humane to just learn to accept everybody, appreciate, and respect them.
There really is no excuse not to, in my opinion.

If anything, i am a '69er skinhead. But i dont follow all the subculture "rules", thus i dont wear the Lonsdale shirt/bomberjacket uniform, even if i like my boots. I shave my head, keep my sideburns, like drinking beer and doing stupid things and dig ska. Some of my chums are more dogmatic, but i like to take a look into other things, thus i hang out with psychobilly mates, have goth friends (and enjoy the occasional industrial/ebm), will visit a punk concert this evening and do very nerdy things.
