NationStates Names and Stereotypes
Do you ever look at someone's name and think they are of some particularly nationality, ethnicity, gender, etc.?
I'll give an example, I got in my head that Sdaeriji was a Persian Male. I guess because of the spelling of the name, which I don't think actually resembles Farsi.
I also thought Dempublicents1 was a male, but I think that was because of some of the things she said.
Can you think of examples of people you assumed were of gender, nationality, etc that you found out later were something else?

I thought Eutrusca was a woman when I first started, and in some ways I prefer to think of him in this way...

I'm one. I was I mean. It was because of the "Barbara"

I've been told by a lot of people that they thought I was Asian the first time the talked to me.
I used to think Bottle and Aerou were guys, and Spoffin and Incertonia were girls. And I usually assume people are American until I find out they're not.

Hmm... I can't recall too many times when I've really been that far off on people based on their names - perhaps because I once had a female puppet! haha! I guess that tends to make me more analytical of how a person posts...
As for me, my own name seems to lead people into thinking that I actually am some sort of lascivious love obsessed lady charmer... to the max! ;)
Honestly, I have no idea where that misconception was born, or how it continues to thrive! Sheesh!

Ooo! Now thats a stereotype I can live with! :D
I'm horrible at assigning gender to people; I'm almost always wrong (like I was in the case of Neo-Anarchists), so I try not to assign anything like that to others.
I have been taken for an American at times, but I guess that happens to anyone who isn't, here. A lot of people on the other side of the pond seem to have difficulties remembering that this is an international forum. Perhaps it's because of the English? Alas, introducing other languages to this little corner of the Internet has been futile.

That's kind of stupid. Your location clearly says "Sweden". I think the people who mistake you for an American are just not bright.

Some people (who don't know their saints) assume I'm female because of the "Barbara" in Santa Barbara.
I am another one, but in my case it had nothing to do with the "Barbara", it was because "Santa" is the designation of a female saint in Portuguese whereas a male saint is Santo or São. I already apologised, but once more, sorry for the gender switch.
I intentionally put an "a" at the end of my name to make people think. I just started typing sounds and got Jocabia. Later I realized it seems like is has Jacob as it's root. Incidentally, Jacob is not my name.
That's kind of stupid. Your location clearly says "Sweden". I think the people who mistake you for an American are just not bright.

The only person, of those I've actually formulated an opinion one way or the other about, that I happened to be wrong was Dempublicants. She debates in very stereotypically male manner and does so with the kind of tenacity and logic that is common to male ego based debate. And does it very well, I might add. ;) :p :fluffle:
I assumed Sinuhue was a man when I first started lurking. (I lurked for a while).
I thought Tink was older.
I thought Legless Pirates was American.
Like I said, I thought Dempublicents1 was a man and an idiot (I'm kidding, but if you look at it right, it's a compliment)
I thought UpwardThrust was not American.

I tend to think of you all as a very complicated type of Zork game that my computer creates to amuse and befuddle me, so I don't often think of picturing the person on the other end unless it comes up, and then I usually have a clue. I think, if pressed, I default to the assumption that people are male unless there is something compelling to suggest otherwise (feminist sigs, etc.)

lets see....in my very very early days of foruming.....
Sdaeriji = thought he was a fun loving, sweet, cuddly guy from Saudi Arabia. This was of course before he stopped believing in the fluffle.
Lascivious Max= thought he was an Italian body builder who taught Sunday school to kids and watched porn during work hours. (but i know the real man now and he's super duper)
Grave n idle= thought he was a magical wizard who knew everything there was about anything and carried a switchblade. Believe it or not, I hit the nail on the head with that one!
Frisbeeteria= thought he was a she and that she might have been a Korean law student in New York.
Cannot think of a name= I imagined he looked like the kid who played Napoleon Dynamite. But now I imagine him as a super cool cynical musican who looks like a member of ZZ Top.
more to come.....

That's about all...
Any British comparing and WW2 threads makes it obvious that i am an ethnocentric German/Irish/Italian. I am also too lazy to post things fully because people should learn my logic to connect the dots. I do only when people either ask or people corrupt/misinterpret what i say.

Yeah, we all know that anyone with this signature:
"We can have peace and security only as long as we band together to preserve that most priceless possession, our inheritance of European blood, only so long as we guard ourselves against attack by foreign armies and dilution by foreign races."

If not informed otherwise, I generally assume that people are American, and from my area, too - I'm sure if I lived in Europe, or Austrailia, or anywhere else, I would assume everyone is from where I am until I find out otherwise, because I tend to view this as a semi-face-to-face interaction, not as one that reaches across the globe - it is pretty mind-boggling to think that I am communicating to people from all over the place, and so to avoid spending half my time confused, I just make assumptions until they are proven wrong.

I am not a latino and I only know a little bit of Spanish (more than most but not enough to get by in Mexico City).

People almost universally assume I'm a Chinese woman, living in Eastern Europe... I can't explain it. Either that or they assume I'm elderly.. all false! :headbang:

Do you ever look at someone's name and think they are of some particularly nationality, ethnicity, gender, etc.?
I'll give an example, I got in my head that Sdaeriji was a Persian Male. I guess because of the spelling of the name, which I don't think actually resembles Farsi.
I thought he was a Jew! but now i know how he got his name!
I thought Occidius Multus was Irish/Italian
Mind you i think your all Jews! :p

I know what you mean about the hooded eyes. I have big hooded eyes and people have often thought I was stoned or falling asleep. Anyway, most people think I'm a guy and some have asked if I'm in college yet. Huh...I wish I was college age. :(
I'm in college at 33 and I just last quarter directed a woman in her 50s? 60s? (I didn't ask, she looked more than capable of delivering a swift kick) in a play (I cast her as god and an Irish girl as famine-cause it made me laugh...). So, really, you're always college age. It just depends on how much crap you had to put up with before you go there.

People think I'm a guy all the time. Probably because I'm the leader of a radical white supremist region, and most leaders of counter culture regions ARE typically male, only because in reality we are very militant people. But no, I am 100% female. :D
Now I shall leave this thread before I am bombarded with insults and immature comments.
you assumed that you would be attacked. thats why people hate you, miss know it all. nazis cant predict the future.

It's weird to be offended and flatered within a really short span...I'll take it. The truth is probably somewhere in between (though the only similarity I'll take with Napolean is that I have lidded eyes that make me either looked stoned or tired all the time no matter what-which I think is part of the reason my car is searched so often...well, and the long hair and beard....)
well , you sound awesome!
Yes, I -am- going to have to ask, despite not speaking up that often, what you have as your preconceptions of me....

Things with cat in the name (after katganistan and feminist cat woman) for some reason (cat or kat) reminds me of a female
maybe it is because it is used for the short version of names like katrina and such

Personally, I think it's because we have a tendency to think of cats as feminine and dogs as masculine (GENERALIZATION).

Forrest, seriously. i don't think i'm just speaking for myself when i say that i have no wish to bite you. because that would be gross. besides which, you're covered in plaster, silly! that's bad for ingestion.

i always assume that you'rea tree hugging canadian brunette woman. armed with only your wits and a powerful liking of maple syrup, you swing from tree to tree in your frozen wasteland's deciduous forests. you wrestle bears. slender hips and shapely legs offset thick, muscled arms, and a friendly, warm lumberjacks face.

Um... I am female, and brunette, and (I guess) witty, and I do like maple syrup, and I have literally been a tree hugger at certain stages in my life. So I guess that was a pretty good guess. :D
