The winds change and I make a decision!

So here's the situation:

You're a music teacher and you genuinely like what you do, but your principal has come to you and given a long speech about budget cuts and blah blah blah and, frankly, you're sick of it, so you decide that after this semester, you're moving on to other things.

You've been offered two jobs which you think worthy of your skills. Which one would you take?

1] Entertainment Editor for a local newspaper. Not very glamorous, but you'd get to see shows free and you'd get to spend more time with your family and it's a managerial position.

2] Staff Writer for an entertainment magazine with wide distribution. The pay is better and it would allow you an expense account to travel to see shows you wouldn't normally get to see. The pay is better than job #1, but you'd have a boss and be subjected to deadlines, word counts, etc.

So ... which would you take?

I say job #1. I took a $20k cut in my annual salary to be with my family more. I made good money, but I was always at work! If your household budget will allow for the lesser of the two salary offers....I say #1!

Dig-job #1. Less with the stress and you can still play locally, which may or may not make up the difference-but you'll still be active in what you really dig, which is playing music-not just talking about others playing music-which will slowly eat away at you inside until you are a shallow husk of your former self. And you can also teach kids on the side, so you still get to spread the love. Win win, really. All about the love, not the paycheck. (if it was about the paycheck you never would have got this far down the path in the first place)

I say job two; travel while you can, many of us never get the chance.

I reckon job 2 sounds interesting. If it became too much stress, get something else.

Job no. 1. actually has more stress than job no. 2. It is a managerial position, you would be held responsible for things beyond your control. I would take job no. 2 for two reasons. One: it is going to be more secure, which, when you have a family as youy do is a significant factor. Two it will offer much more in the way of opportunities to make contacts in the industry in general, which will eventually enable you to do more of what you want to do, and less of shuffling paper.

The only downside is that you will not have as much freedom to express yourself as you would wish. (I assume travelling for an overnight stay here or there is not a problem as you are considering the job.)

If you don't need the extra money, no.1. sounds better. :)

I believe you have kids? And as far as I know you love them very much. So no1 sounds better to me.
I rather work in a small company than in a large one. I loved to work in a small newspaper.

Well, I used to have radical job changes a while back. You know, get drunk, enlist in the Army.

You get free world travel, meals and lodging always included. You get your own weapon, and occasionally you get to shoot at people (well, they might shoot at you, but those are the breaks).

Personally, I'd choose job 1 for the more immediate merits it offers. However, I think Alien Born has a point too.
