The Italian police started turning back mourners. The Vatican announced that it will close St. Peter.'s Basillica for viewing tommarow morning. And yet mourners come by the millions. There are so many coming, I've heard that all trains and flights to anywhere in Italy are booked. The latest strategy is to fly to a neiboring country, then drive to Italy. I personally find it touching that so many loved the Holy Father this much.

I agree. It is very touching. Im not religious in the slightest. But I have been moved by the way the world has reacted to the death of the Pope.

It's very interesting how this pope has transcended his faith, and has become a moral leader to even non-Catholics. Those 2 billion people that I mentioned will be those watching the Pope's funeral on TV, the largest audience ever in the history of the world. For comparison, only 1.3 billion people on this planet are Catholic.

I'd love to go to Rome, too. But it is too far away right now. I live in the US, and probably all flights to Europe are booked, let alone Rome. There may be some idiots trying to go by ship, but they won't make it in time. Still, I wouldn't mind the prospect of camping at the Circus Maximus, or fast food every day, or cigarette smoke everywhere. I'd just want to see the Pope.

Plus, Rome is an amazingly beautiful city. There would be plenty to see in addition to going to St. Peter's.

I was being sarcastic. Besides, a trip to Rome for yourself is morally superior to giving to a charity. Charities must be reserved exclusively for disaster relief, or dumping cash. But that's another arguement for the Ayn Rand side of me. Right now, I am honoring religion. Note the irony here :).

So I've heard. My mom went on a trip there in September. St. Peter's alone was enough to move her to tears at its beauty.
Still, it is probably impossible to go to any of these sites right now. And while it is probably hard to get a table at a resturant, especially at the inflated prices they are at right now, it is probably just as hard even to get a coffee there. Then there's that annoying afternoon nap Italians always take.

Rome isn't all that special. Sure, there's some nice architecture, but where isn't there in Europe? Although, I'd go there again just for the gelato. It's semi-orgasmic.

Only the Italians know beauty. The French and Austrians are mere imitators, the English have no sense of beauty, and the Germans, Scandanavians, and Baltic peoples love this architecture that reminds me of my grandma's tudor from the eighties. But Italy took Greco-Roman architecture to a new level, and made it into its own. Florence is extremely beautiful, and so is Venice. I've also heard that Sienna is very nice.

"1 a : the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God b : the act of claiming the attributes of deity
2 : irreverence toward something considered sacred or inviolable"

He wasn't Christlike at all, and to say he lived his privileged and affluent life like Christ is laughable. I have no doubt that if he was as pious as you claim, he would scoff at such hubris when describing him.

Look I'm not christian but I don't dislike Christianity... the pope was a wonderful guy in life, he was sort of a goofball, I'm not trying to make fun of him, I am however amused by the idolatrous veneration people have for him at his death. He was a great man who needs to be honored, but he is not God, and what mortal is to judge who is christ like or not? In any case it would still be awesome if he popped out of his casket and then we can all share a laugh with him.

I don't think any mortal has the authority to judge who is righteous and who isn't, or who is Christlike.

Yeah, right.

The French and Austrians are mere imitators,

As were the Italians. Not surprising, since their ancestors had to shamelessly steal an entire culture from the Greeks.

the English have no sense of beauty,

If Italian = beauty, then no.

and the Germans, Scandanavians, and Baltic peoples love this architecture that reminds me of my grandma's tudor from the eighties.

Now that's just so wrong it's funny.

But Italy took Greco-Roman architecture to a new level, and made it into its own.

Copied the copy cats.

Florence is extremely beautiful, and so is Venice. I've also heard that Sienna is very nice.

No argument there. Rome, on the other hand, is nice for some of the ruins, and some of Michelangelo's (whom they imported from Florence) works.

A.) By your logic, that means you, too. You and I do it all the time.
B.) Judgements are always passed by humans. That doesn't mean that they matter, nor should they count. However, I am supremely confident that the majority assessment on the Pope matches the authoritative and objective decision.

Well then, with that line of thinking, every national and ecclesiastical government should not exist. Every government on the planet has some skeletons in its closet. The Catholic Church does mostly because it had the gift of longevity.

Attributing the attributes of a deity to anyone else but that deity, especially in monotheistic religions like Christianity where the deity is a vengeful, and, I quote, "jealous" one when it comes to idolatry, is not just blasphemy, but heresy against the first commandment.

Not really, I've never in my life decided how "Christlike" someone is or if they're going to heaven or hell... I don't even know if heaven or hell exists. in a metaphysical context such as this I refuse to, and I don't know how to, judge someone.

Who wrote that passage at the top? The Pope? Some papal commission? Well, FYI, I disagree with a lot of their theology. Mine is actually closer to some Protestant ideas. However, I still have faith in the church.
Plus, I am not worshipping a false idol. His death will be irrelevant a few centuries from now. Instead, I am mourning the death of a beloved family member, even if I did never meet him.

At death for years. It's not a new joke and neither is it disrespectful. It's humour and maybe some people don't find it humourous but others can laugh at it and still maintain their respect for the guy.

Also, for the people who are concerned about the people who butt in on what is meant to be a serious thread what the hell? I mean, if you really take the thread seriously it shouldn't be an issue whether joe blo says nyah nyah this sucks. Sure it may seem hurtful but honestly, what difference does it make? You've said your peace, you believe it, other people believe it too from the looks of the thread just go with the people that matter to you and forget about the rest.

Telling those who piss you off that they're rude and they will be punished isn't going to change their opinion or make them act up any less. This should be common sense because it happens time and time again on these forums. Maybe their should be people who are more apologetic or "have more manners" but in the meantime know that what matters most is the changes that you make in yourself.
