I like da old skool; EA Poe, HP Lovecraft, and Bram Stoker. Lovecraft in particular; after reading his stories, I feel the need to inscribe an Elder symbol on everything I see and plaster over all the edges in my walls...

(poll coming)
Without a doubt Lovecraft.
The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, is quite likely my favourite horror story ever written.
Although Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" is close. :)

Does Shelly really deserve to be on the poll?
Frankenstein is probably my favorite book, but I don't see it as horror.
Last men in London definetly wasn't either.
Lovecraft is probably my favorite though (no contest really, I don't read much horror)

Have to pick King. He's the only horror I've ever really read.
I know some of his stuff is incredibly stupid (has anyone read Cristine or Four Past Midnight ?) but some of his stuff genuinely scared me. And then some of his stuff is just plain awsome; The Stand, The Bachman Books (especially The Long Walk), and my all time favorites The Dark Tower series.

I have to stick to my man; King. I loved the Stand and the dark tower series is my favorite...
I still have to read the last one...

Stephen King definitely. While I enjoyed The Dark Tower Books, I have to say, the ending in the last book was very lazy. I was extremely dissapointed (though I won't give it away in case others haven't read it)

Well Lovcraft sucks. All his sories are copies of each other read one read all. It is pretty boring. King is really good. But I prefare Ambrose Bierce above all horror writers followed by R. Dahl.

Lovecraft. And why please is Anne Rice even in that poll?

Lovecraft sucks, but King is really good? What's the matter with you? Lovecraft came up with the idea of a mythology that ties his stories together. An idea that King stole, I may add.

Kind of like the first book....I think he went a little over the top when he introduced himself as one of the characters in the books. Even making him being hit by the van (in real life) a fundamental part of the overall story.

Yes... he was.... like God...
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
"'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door;
Only this, and nothing more."
I love that poem.

Some is. Yes, but you have to admit he did some groundbreaking stuff. He developed and refined a mythology through his stories, and his monsters weren't your ordinary murderous psychos, but rather manifestations of a mindless, chaotic universe beyond our understanding or control.

I tend to agree that the older stuff is better (from what I've read), but King is probably my favourite author... so I guess I'll give my vote to him.
Anyone here read Dan Simmons? Stinky stuff...
