In response to Pure Metals topic of the IRC Rooms, I promised I'd post a step by step tutorial. So here it is.
1. Download MIRC from Mirc.com (http://www.mirc.com/get.html). Selecting whichever server is closest to you.
2. Install MIRC, just keep clicking next, the standard install options should be fine.
3. When it's finished tick the "launc mIRC" option and click finish.
4. If you're using an Internet Firewall other than that which is provided with windows, make a post, I'll help best as I can.
5. You'll be presented with MIRC, click continue.
6. The mIRC options screen will then display, enter some fluff for your first name. You can enter your real name but I'd reccomend against for security reasons.
Enter an email address, I personally use hotmail accounts for all of my pubic email addressing - it makes for less spam.
Enter a primary and secondary nickname. These are the names by which people will see your messages on IRC. If your first choice of nickname is already used, the server will select your alternate nickname.
Invisible Mode and New Server Window should not be checked. This should leave you with something like this:
Full Name: Fluff
Email Address: youraddress@hotmail.com
Nickname: Kusarii
Alternative Nickname: RhymingObituary
Invisible Mode: Blank
New Server Window: Blank.
6. Next click on either the flower button, to the right of connect to server, OR select Servers, in the menu on the left.
7. In this screen click Add under IRC Server. Enter your description as something like Nation States Server the IRC server should be irc.esper.net. Port, Group and password should be left as they are.
Click Add.
8. This should take you back to the previous options window, click connect to server.
9. After a short delay, a load of text should appear on the screen, followed by mIRC Favourites window. This displays the list of available channels or "chat rooms" on the server to which you are connected. At the top should be the option to: "Enter a channel name and click to join: "
10. Into the top text box enter one of the following options:
#internationalincidents
#internationalleaderslounge
#nationstates
#nationstates_gameplay
#nationstates_general
#nationstates_outcasts
#nationstates_politics
#nationstates_rp
#nationstates_technical
#nationstates_underground
#nationstates2
#ns
#sport
#themodcave
These are the various Nation States chat rooms, corresponding in most cases to the different forums. Once you have entered a room, click join.
And voila, you are in a nation states chatroom.
Once in a room, to change the room you are in/connect to a new room type:
/join followed by room name.
For example: /join '#nationstates_rp
