It should be protected. It costs money to develop new products and patent them. It costs money to make movies, music, etc. If the people who produce such things don't recoup their investment and make a profit they'll stop producing.

It's ok as long as only actual implementations are protected and they are not banal, which is unfortunately often not the case. Ideas can't (or shouldn't) be patented.
