I have a plan!

So next year, instead of working at a grocery store part time during school, I'm going to be my own boss, set my own hours and get paid more than double my wages.

I am going to put my partially completed degree to use and be: a physics tutor for highschool students.

I just don't know how much to charge for this service.

Easy way to figure out the 'going rate' - pretend you are a parent and ring up a load of private tutors.

thats a good way
if you dont want to be sneaky you can call up the guidance office at the local highschool and ask. that way you can get your name on their list too.

Well, my plan was to walk into a local highschool and ask around to be put on the list for tutors. I could ask there. I should have asked the guy who suggested it (one of my classmates) another classmate said that a highschool kid would probably pay $40 an hour... I think that's a lot... That would mean that with one student for an hour a week, I could eat, and then some.

My friend Dan runs a tutorring program through the university here, tutorring in biology and chemistry. They charge $10 an hour, mostly because it's college students paying out of pocket normally, and not high school kids. A few of my grad student friends in the history department run a tutorring program for high schoolers, and they charge $30 an hour, but they're grad students. The consensus amongst the people involved that I have just spoken to is that you could reasonably charge anywhere from $15-$20 an hour for your services. They advise that you should not, however, count on tutorring as your primary source of income, because you will probably never see more than 8 hours of tutorring a week. Hope this helps.

$40/hour? Say, are they hiring for tutors to teach kids how to waste time on NS, drink too much and generally annoy the hell out of people? I'm an expert in those subjects.

Well, for one thing, I'm also talking canadian currency here... so it's a bit differnt. One of my friends got $60 from a first year for an hour of tutoring in which he determined that she did not even understand basic math. i.e. if you have pi + pi what do you get?

And well, at the moment, I'm doing about 9 hours of work a week at $7.45/hour... If I could do 4 hours at $20, then I'd be making about the same, plus I wouldn't have to pay union dues nor would I have to pay income tax. :) (not that I earn enough to begin with)

And I wouldn't rely on that for most of my income. I don't rely on my current job for that either. I earn most of my money in the summer.

Also, I don't think I would charge $40 unless it's standard. Even then, I think I would undercut my competition. (oh, and thank you for the help)

youre in a union and you would CONSIDER undercutting the competition??

dont do it

parents will think they are getting cut rate service too. its a kind of prestige thing.

just charge the going rate and youll get more work based on how well you do with the ones you get.

its not going to be easy. teaching basic concepts to kids who are already failing is quite a challenge. they are already very resistant to the whole thing.

No, I'm in a union at the supermarket.

If I'm tutoring kids, then I'll be my own boss.

And yeah, that makes sense to charge the same as everyone else I suppose.

And also, if they require more time to learn things, then well, I do plan on relaxing my courseload so I will end up with an extra year, but less teeth grinding... so I should have time to help especially slow learners, for a fee, of course.

Depending on how good you are, 10-30 US dollars/hour is about the going rate.

$15/hr would be reasonable for your first job, as long as you demonstrate results.

Why not finish your degree?

I think she means she's going to tutor as a way of making money while she's in school, rather than work part time at the grocery store.

I'm tutoring a first year uni, health science student and I get $25 an hour. A friend who works at a tuition centre gets paid that.

I need a couple more students and I'll be set.

If you are not going to pay tax and SS on that money, make sure you are paid in cash. Legally, you have to pay tax on it.

Be careful about undercutting your competition. If you do that, some people might not hire you because they might think you are not very good. And if you undercut them to severely you might have a knock on your door at midnight.

i found that it strongly depends on the socio-economic surroundings of the area you are in. i am a grad. student in chemistry and have been tutoring for a few years (easy money). as an undergrad, i was in a primarily small-town setting where median income is not that high and was only paid $15/hour cash. however, now as a grad, i am in a large, metropolitan area and the school i am at is in a very high-income neigborhood. i now get paid $38/hour going through a tutoring agency (which charges parents $50). a friend of mine has his own tutoring business and charges $55/hour! these students we tutor go to spendy private schools and the parents solve problems with their money. i don't have the balls to ask someone for $55/hour so i go through the agency so they can deal with securing money. oh yeah, i still get tipped occasionally too!

anyway, ask around, see what other students charge for tutoring, if you don't have a hook-up, get in good with the department secretaries, they're the ones who get emails from the high-schoolers' parents asking for tutoring.

If the highschool kid asks what mass is, what do you tell him? If he asks what potential is, what do you tell him? If he asks what a mu meson is, what do you tell him?

Well, I'm going to do that as I tutor.

I can't finish my degree if I don't have food money.

I think I'm going for another degree after that as well, perhaps.

I don't even earn enough to pay taxes. I think you need to earn at least $20,000 to pay them. (I live in Canada) and yeah, I'll probably ask the highschool people what the general going rate is and stick with that. perhaps with discounts for referrals.
