Not that much personally, suprising considering I'm a computing student.

I estimate I've bought maybe £500's worth in the last 2 years.

Previous to that the only computer related things I'd bought were games, so if you count those, it probably goes as high as maybe £700

My computer, new, 3 years ago was $2400CND and I have since bought a new video card and RAM. ^_^ So, about $2000USD total. Though I think I might've spent more, seeing how I've bought a new keyboard, mouse, router and joy stick... Hmn...whatelse...

Well, back then I didn't know how to build, so bought.

My dad's, which I built, I did a year ago for about $750CND (then again, I have a P4 1.9 GHz and he has a crappy Celeron at 2.4GHz)

Ahhh I tend not to build Pentium machines but yeah I know the feeling ... I did that a few years ago but all my systems now are built (I do it for a busniess now)

So if you are counting expenses for my building computers that puts me in the 100K + mark

But personal machines I have about 9k total USD sitting in my basement :D

I would use Athelon, but I do more writing and application based stuff at home (including programming, which I absolutely hate), so I need processor speed more than anything.

Sweet... Nice business. I'm just starting my business. I'm still dabbling with names.

Only 9K? I know people (seeing how I'm in school and whatnot), who have extra machines just sitting under their computer tables as well as servers in addition to their main one and a laptop. It's pretty sad.

At least you have a good reason...

I just have my crappy P166 collecting dust in my closet.

5 years seems a bit wide of a time frame for a question on computers. My experience with laptops is that the useful life of a computer runs in the 3 year range. After that, you start to lose the ability to run the latest software.

Although with that said, there's been kind of a slowdown in tech advancements the past year or so. I bought my laptop at the end of 2003 and there have only been minor improvements since... I paid about $2500.

I said in my basement :) ... as in not in use (sorry did not make that clear) they are being setup for more server equipment
I am running an extra about 9k more worth of machines up right now

As for Amd and programming ... you got to be kidding ... at price AMD walks all over pentium

NOT to mention WTF programming are you doing that requires that processing power? I can compile just about anything that I have writen by hand in under 5 minuits and thoes were full fleged gui based apps (on a 450 mhz BSD machine)?

Maybe so but I did not want to limit it to the current computer
