As the man sez.
Nuclear power is the best replacement for fossil fuel at this time.
As the man sez.
Yay! I'm "the man"!
Wait..... that's bad... AHHHH! *Kills self*

I said yes because if just one thing goes wrong there could be a disaster. Nuclear energy is so powerful, its scary to think what could go wrong

Yes, a nice nuclear meltdown. That would suck massive....

I'm alright with using at as an energy source. The only thing I'm afraid of is the bombs! :gundge:

Me: No.
But I was raised by a nuclear physicist that worked at the Hanford and EEG&G sites in Washington and Idaho.
American people: Yes.
Three Mile Island caused mass hysteria. Chernobyl was another dagger to the heart. Combine that with distrust of government and the arrogance of the the relevant government agencies and energy companies. Americans generally distrust anything "nuclear" and they have little trust for those who would be responsible.

Itr depends what you mean by "nuclear energy". If you mean the energy itself in general, in certain incarnations, I do fear it.
If you mean nuclear energy as in the power-plant sort, then no, not me.
I feel that the American populace may, due to the whole Three Mile Island incident and all.

What's funny, is that generation three tech is a lot safer than the reactors that aare still operating, but building one is almost impossible thanks to lawsuits filed by green-activists and the scare-mongering in the press.
(Tchernobyl and TMI were both Gen. 2 reactors, which rely exclusively on active, rather than passive, safeties.)
The waste-disposal problem would further not be as much of a problem without the Executive order issued by the Carter administration in 1979 forbidding the use of closed-cycle processing. In a closed-cycle system, you reprocess the fuel for re-use, it breeds Plutonium, but that Plutonium is mostly of the 240 variety, while 239 is the preferred material for bombs. (240 doesn't give a nice enough bang, and is less controllable than the other.)
Oh...in answer to the question:
Me: Of course not, I know enough to be unafraid.
The American People: have been frightened by thirty years of propoganda.

I'm confused by this paragraph...
What's a gen three tech? I only know CANDU.
What are the currently operating ones?
What lawsuits?

i dont really like it.
i believe its possible(though somewhat unlikely) to be done in a _relatively_ safe manner, but just the fact that some of the substances you are dealing with are _extremely_ dangerous should be seriously considered.
personnally, i think increased efficiency decreased consumption, passive/active solar, wind, and microhydro are the way to go:)
and a bunch of methane digesters/biofuel :)
i know its damn near impossible to do with our current lifestyles(in the U.S.) but both nuclear and fossil are non-renewable. its not a question of whether they will run out, but when. may be a while, but that doesnt change the fact that it will happen.
btw, anybody ever hear of the olduvai theory?
you should do a quick google of it, some really interesting stuff, i wouldnt do it justice here.
but basically, we are going to (possibly soon) exhaust all the non-renewable resources(fossil fuels, metal ores, etc) and society will collapse back to the early agricultural stages, and would lack the resources to acheive industrialization again.
my dream world:)

American People? I don't really think so. The general attitude is, I think, more along the lines of "not in my backyard."

ok im from the UK and i think nuclear power is the only way forward at the moment. it takes many years to get a nuclear power plant online so we need to start NOW to protect our future!
so no im not scared of it!
Do the you and the American People fear nuclear energy? And WHY??Depends on the application.
for running my home... no
for blowing people up.... yes.

Just random info: If we were to replace all oil and coal generated power with nuclear power, we would have uranium for 25 years. :p

American people: I dont know, but probably not.
There are over 100 nuclear power plants in the US. Nearly every single state has at least one. So, I doubt people are scared of them.

Yes we don't trust Nuclear power.
It causes unusable waste that is dangerous, can cause mutations, kill, and is unwanted.
It can also cause a melt down based on facilities it is grown from.
Sorry, till you can rid the waste, no Nuclear power.

This what really annoys me when people bash nuclear power.
First, the waste is usable. It's possible to recycle the waste and reuse it. The French do it.
and Second, the chances of a meltdown are practically nil. Right now the US Navy has about 100 nuclear powered ships traveling the globe. Not once has there been a meltdown. There are a similar number of power plants on US soil. The only problem was 3 Mile Island, and that was a negligible release of radiation. Nuclear power is safe, it's reliable, and it's cheap.

Me: no: It's incredibly efficient, and contrary to the vehement claims of the greenies and company, if one takes good care and administers their nuclear equipment and waste it is clean and benign.
