Advanced
You scored 92% Beginner, 92% Intermediate, 80% Advanced, and 73% Expert!
You have an extremely good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and advanced level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three levels' questions correct. This is an exceptional score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don't use them properly. You got an extremely respectable score.

Actually, looking through the answer key, I've found several places where I was right, and the key was wrong.

For instance, they say that "hanged" is the only correct answer to the question about the execution, but that's not true according to Merriam Webster, who allow for both "hanged" and "hung", which was what I answered (i.e. that either or was correct).

The same is true for "yolk" and "yoke". So the test itself is incorrect.

I suspect that "hanged" and "hung" represents a variation between American and British english.

And "yolk" is the yellow of an egg, whilc "yoke" is what was used to hitch a team of oxen.

Actually, in advanced writing you can start a sentence with "but."

That is one of those rules that is generally true and only generally true. But using "but" at the beginning of a sentence is dangerous and should not be tried at home. :D

According to Merriam Webster [www.m-w.com]:
Main Entry: yolk
Pronunciation: 'yOk, 'yelk (in cultivated speech, especially Southern), also 'yOlk, 'yolk, 'yälk, 'y&lk
Variant(s): also yoke

I have always spelled it yolk myself, but have seen it spelled "yoke" and knew it was acceptable, so when I accepted both as correct, I was, well, wronged.

Ihate that rule with a passion, and break it whenever I feel like it. It's like "i before e".... inconsistent. And but looks fine at the beginning of a sentence, in my opinion.

It use to be that beginning sentance with either "and" or "but" was totally unacceptable. However most writers now consider it acceptable, especially for adding emphasis. :)

Hanged is the past participle of the verb to hang if and only if it is being used in the sense of hanging someone by the neck until they are dead. A picture or washing is hung. A person is hanged. (Really obscure grammar. It is a hold over from older grammatical forms and has been retained due to the traditional sentence:
"You shall be taken from this place to another of her majesty's choosing and there you shall be hanged by the neck until you are dead." )

Again, MW is a bit more progressive:
For both transitive and intransitive senses 1b the past and past participle hung, as well as hanged, is standard. Hanged is most appropriate for official executions <he was to be hanged, cut down whilst still alive ... and his bowels torn out -- Louis Allen> but hung is also used <gave orders that she should be hung -- Peter Quennell>. Hung is more appropriate for less formal hangings <by morning I'll be hung in effigy -- Ronald Reagan>.

As I already mentioned, "yoke" is an acceptable variant of "yolk".

It also recognizes "yoke" as a variant of "yolk."

If the Merriam Webster defines it as such then it is a USA - UK difference.

3. To fasten up or suspend on a cross or gibbet, as a mode of capital punishment; a. formerly, spec. to crucify; b. now, spec. to put to death by suspension by the neck.

In this sense, hanged is now the specific form of the pa. tense and pa. pple.; though hung is used by some, esp. in the south of England.

Rather pleased, as my father was an English professor. Haven't studied grammar since junior high.

You scored 92% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 93% Expert!

I'm not sure what I missed in the beginner section... I looked through the answer key, and all of what I thought were my answers were the correct ones... Perhaps I clicked the wrong button on one of them (or, perhaps I clicked one, and nudged my scroll wheel, which moves the selection down the list of radio buttons)

The Hanged/Hung one got me in the expert section, though... I know that for sure... I, too, selected the "Either one" option...

But regardless, I'm not ashamed (nor surprised, if I can say that without sounding cocky) at my results... I have a certain knack for linguistic endeavors... It comes from my innate desire to understand things... Not just memorize, and repeat, but to actually understand... And understanding language is extremely important, since almost all other thought hinges upon it (I'd say that all thought hinges upon it, but I guess there must be some forms that do not, otherwise, we'd have to think that babies do not think...lol)

(except for effect and affect, the difference has been expalained to me many times, I still don't get the difference).

I know this will likely be futile (since it has probably been put to you this way many times already), but I'll have a go...

Effect is a noun... It is what results from a cause...

"The desired effect of this explanation is that Anarchic Conceptions will finally understand the difference..."

Affect is a verb... You are doing something to something...

"However, it is likely that this attempt will not affect his understanding, because it is redundant to past attempts..."
