The Pope and Terri Schiavo

I did a google search and Terri Schiavo turned up 15,200,000 results.
Pope John Paul II only got 9,220,000 results. (However, "The Pope" got 22,900,000 results.)

I think it's a little disturbing about our priorities in culture and specifically, what the news tends to concentrate on. IMO Terri Schiavo should have been a quiet footnote, not some blaring pigfest where all the journalists stand around jerking each other off all day and all the people lap it up. The death of the Pope - beloved by millions globally - should not have to contend with the death of some comatose bulimic chick. But it did, because someone attached a political hotbutton to Terri that no one could stop from hitting.

Bah, what do you make of all this?

The Pope may have gotten more hits if the ones before him (and I mean centuries) weren't such douchebags :)

I think that it's not entirely suprising.

You have to think of the types of people that use the Internet.

Catholics and in general, people who would really have much to say about the Pope (prior to his death) aren't going to have as much of a presence as people who would have something to say about Schiavo.

Schiavo's case was a moralistic and ethical case more than a religious one, so it's bound to have a wider audience than those who would comment on the pope.

Another fact to bear in mind is that the Schiavo case has been continuing for quite a while now (in the major public eye) whereas the pope only started running into serious difficulties a week or two ago. So in that, her case has had more time for publicity.

While the passing of the Pope has been a sad, though not entirely unexpected occurence, it does not suprise me that a case such as Schiavo's has taken precedence, as in general it has the potential to directly affect everybody. The pope's did not.

I agree.

The death of the Pope - beloved by millions globally - should not have to contend with the death of some comatose bulimic chick.

Here I disagree. The pope was basicly an old man dieing of natural causes. There was no ethical problem with his dead. The Schiavo case (and is it necessary to speak of "some comatose bulimic chick" ?) is about if one has the right to decide when to die, and who is believed if the person him/herself is not able to state his/her wishes. The "are you in charge of your own life" question is one of the most fundamental questions of a moral system and therefor important.

I have no ethical problem with Schiavo's death either, in fact if it had not been for the news blowup of her particular importance I would never have known about it. The Pope on the other hand has more importance. His death affects people in the same way that... well, that Jesus's death does! Schiavo must be referred to as "some" chick because you see, she is unimportant in the grand scheme of things. The only important thing was the issues ramped up SURROUNDING her. She became artificially important by becoming the poster girl of some Cause.

ANd that cause may have been important (I don't think so, I think whether I live or die after going into a coma is ALREADY out of my hands and nothing will change that), and if so it should be addressed. In fact, if it was so important it should have already been addressed, or continue to be addressed until resolved. But it won't be, it was all just another excuse to have people on two sides bitching at each other over some unimportant issue.

Agreed. It would have been much better if this issue was presented as an ethical dilemma instead of being hung up on a single media hyped case.

The man is indireclty reponsible for the aid's explosion in africa due to his contraception policies.

If Catholics in Africa followed the Pope's directives about being faithful to one partner then the AIDS explosion would be greatly limited. The absence of the use of condoms is as much to do with culture as religion "who wants a sweet with the wrapper still on" is a popular saying in Africa. Other aspects of culture in Africa such as the belief that sleeping with a virgin will cure HIV/AIDS cause an increase in the spread of the disease as does ignorance about other things. Africans are also harmed by the lack of effective anti-retroviral drugs in their countries.

Now, I'm not a Catholic and I disagree with Catholic doctrine on contraception but I don't think that's it's fair to just blame the Pope for AIDS.

As I already stated in one of these threads, he did the best he could considering his ultracatholic upbringing and further indoctrination in the priest school thing and throughout his early career from all the older priests.
