Who do you think the modern world owes the most to? This could be in terms of science, culture, leagacy....... It could be individual people or countries. Also it can be from any time.

In my opinion, three things:

Fire
Agriculture
Writing

I don't think the modern world could have ever arisen without these.

Personally i think it would be the Briish empire, they spread the English language (the most internationally recognised in todays world?), the industrial revilution (OK you could say it lead to global warming if you really wanted to but it did change the world in perhaps on of the most substansial ways ever) and they were also the parent nation of alot of todays nations e.g. usa, canada, new zealand

Nationwise, I'd say the Roman Empire. Greece may have led the way, but it was Rome that spread and improved on it. All modern Western law comes from Roman law, so this is one of my main motivators.

The Air Conditioner, the Refrigerator, and the Computer are my top three inventions, in no specific order.

Of course, they all come from a much bigger breakthrough: Electricity. Electricity, along with the findings of Louis Pasteur, are my top two breakthroughs.
