KALAMAZOO, Michigan (AP) -- Commentator and former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan cut short an appearance after an opponent of his conservative views doused him with salad dressing.

"Stop the bigotry!" the demonstrator shouted as he hurled the liquid Thursday night during the program at Western Michigan University. The incident came just two days after another noted conservative, William Kristol, was struck by a pie during an appearance at a college in Indiana.

After he was hit, Buchanan cut short his question-and-answer session with the audience, saying, "Thank you all for coming, but I'm going to have to get my hair washed."

The demonstrator, identified by authorities as a 24-year-old student at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, was arrested and faces a misdemeanor charge of disturbing the peace. He was released on a $100 cash bond, pending his April 14 arraignment.

"He could have faced a felony assault charge, but Pat Buchanan decided to not press that charge," university spokesman Matt Kurz said.

Buchanan's visit had evoked controversy on campus because it fell on the birthday of the late Mexican-American labor leader Cesar Chavez. Buchanan favors tighter controls on immigration.

Kristol, editor of the influential conservative magazine The Weekly Standard and former chief of staff to Vice President Quayle, was splattered by a student during a speech Tuesday at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana.

Members of the audience at the Quaker college jeered the student, then applauded as Kristol wiped the pie from his face and said, "Just let me finish this point." Kristol then completed his speech and took questions from the audience.

The student, who was not immediately identified, was suspended and could face expulsion following a disciplinary review, Earlham Provost Len Clark said Wednesday.

Clark also issued a written apology complimenting Kristol for his "graciousness

Treated so harshly? Boy you're stupid. The student's lucky the school didn't charge him the fee Buchanan charged for speaking since he didn't finish. I say he got off light

Typical - instead of addressing the point, you try to move to a different issue. Whether conservatives "monopolize the media and censor all opposing opinions" or not, does not change the fact that such behavior is ridiculous, does not advance the liberal cause, and actually makes conservatives look like the more reasonable party. And I find it VERY ironic that you are upset about supposed suppression of opposing opinions, but support someone who was trying to do just that.

You don't believe in censoring, but you support throwing things at a speaker, which accomplishes just that?

Your answer to my original statement was to simply state a different problem, that of supposed suppression of opinions in the media by the right. Whatever. But that is in direct contradiction to what the student did, which was effectively suppress Mr. Buchanan's speech. Inconsistent.

As to my original point - the behavior only serves to make liberals look ridiculous and conservatives more reasonable. By all means, I hope it continues. Or do you disagree?

Let's get some things straight. Pat Buchanan is not bigoted and he is not a neo-conservative. He despises neo-cons and all of their screw-ups are often the subjects of his writings.

I think he's a great guy and I'd probably be angry at the guy that doused him in his drink. At the same time I think it's laughable that dousing someone with a drink is considered a felony. It's not polite to do this to someone you disagree with when they're trying to speak but I'm a huge hypocrite and I won't condemn it if it's done to someone that I disagree with strongly or is merely a caricature of the ideas and people that person represents (Buchanan isn't a caricature). I'd like to reserve my right to doing something like that if I ever meet Ted Kennedy.

Yes, he could've kept speaking, but to far less effect with salad dressing dripping down his forehead, tie, and shirt. Thus suppressing the effectiveness of his speech. And don't try and tell me the student's intent was not to get him to stop speaking.

I say the same about that incident - also very boorish, and makes the conservatives look ridiculous.

Though I must say that is seems to happen a lot less from conservatives. The same happened to Ann Coulter not too long ago. Might be interesting to tabulate all similar incidents in the past few years.
