Name your top 3 bands

At first I was just going to say "name your favourite band," but I couldn't narrow it down that far. So name your favourite three bands, and why, what makes them great.

Mine are: The Wallflowers, Brand New, and The Postal Service.

The Wallflowers, of course, had a big album in the 90's. They came out with another one in 2002, I think, but it wasn't very popular. They're coming out with another one in May, and the first single from it sounds good. Anyway, "Bringing Down the Horse" had a lot of great songs on it, especially my favourite, One Headlight.

Brand New is sort of... Punk/Emo/Hardcore. Bitter lyrics, mostly about x-girlfriends. What's great about them is that the meaning of the song isn't always what the lyrics suggest. The words are hateful, but you know he's just hurt. And they have a lot of 3 part harmonies that are just awesome in surround sound.

The Postal Service has a soothing electric/synthesizer ensemble, but the vocals aren't synthesized or electronically altered or anything. The singer's voice is as pleasant as the synthesizer, and the lyrics are great too. "Such Great Heights" is likely the crowning achievement of their album, though by no means the only good song, but unfortunately it's been reduced to background music for commercials advertising new doctor shows.

Aww, when I first read that I thought it said "... brands"
That would have been infiniately more interesting and a billion times less already done by every fucking forum on the planet.

Anyhoo...
I'll regret putting down a list now because somebody later will say a band that I love to pieces and then I'll feel depressed because I forgot and abandoned it.
However, here you go:
-Faithless
-The Streets
-Radiohead

No I'm not British, but I wish I was with all their hot guys and kick arse bands.
They're not in any order, by the way.

First, I'm not going to pick any very recent bands, until they've earned it. Next, I think I'll try to be thematically, chronologically and geographically diverse, because I'm tired and a bit bored. So,

The Rolling Stones
The Fables
Green Day

Cream, as in the complation?
Well if we're doing complation series:
(In order)
--Gatecrasher (Resident Transmission, The Gatecrasher Experience, it doesn't matter, they're all tops.)
--QUAKE TRANCE BEST (Something I picked up in Japan... really fucking good trance mixes of old songs that nobody has ever heard of)
--Ministry of Sound, The Annuals (It's trashy techno-pop but I like it)

Notice how these don't resemble my favourite bands whatsoever... well Faithless is some dance, but their non dance stuff rocks as well. This is because most techno-y trance-y dance-y artists suck and are only good when mashed together with lots of other tracks and remixed by a dj.

They're coming out with another one in May, and the first single from it sounds good. Anyway, "Bringing Down the Horse" had a lot of great songs on it, especially my favourite, One Headlight.

I'm in a Wallflowers video, but only barely. In the video for 'The Difference' there was footage shot at The Filmore in SF. I'm in the last alcove of the balcony with the friend who brought me. He had an extra ticket and I was bored. I've never seen the video myself but my friend did and he said we where barely noticable, which is a state I'm pretty comfortable with...

I'll, for now, say-
Kronos Quartet-String quartet that plays new music. Their fantastic.

Sex Mob-Free jazz 'covers' (I have a hard time calling them covers in jazz, just doesn't seem appropriate) of pop songs like The Macarana, Sign o' the Times, Live and Let Die...just fantastic. And the bit they did with members of Medeski Martin and Wood where they did Bond themes...fantastic.

Dirty Dozen Brass Band-Everythin' I do go'n to be funk-ay. From now on. Really, can't be in a bad mood and listen to the Dozen-just not possible.

Aww you sounded so sad =(

Haha... Actually, I was referring to brands of all sorts. It's funny how people automatically think clothes when you say brands. I just mean brands in general. What brands would you buy something from no matter what it was, just because it's that brand? Mixed with how you think of their operations (ethically and such) and strained to three and you get your list of 3 favourite brands.
Mine would be:
--Sony Corporation (everything they do kicks arse. Sony electronics, Sony Ericsson, Sony computer entertainment, their various movie studios. However, Sony Music sucks and should burn in hell.)
--Fudge (Australian hair product manufactures... export worldwide but I dont know how prominent they are. They make the best human (and dog) hair shampoos and conditioners, syling products, hair colours, treatments, etc etc etc... and they dont use animal products or test on animals)
--Vodafone (I'm being a traitor and using Hutchison's 3 network now though, but only because Vodafone was taking so long launching their 3G network in Australia. As soon as it's released, I'm back. Dont ask me why I like them... mainly because they're not Tel$tra (http://www.telstra.com) or Optus (http://www.optus.com.au): they dont rip off their customers or treat them like invalids Microsoft-style.)

Meh, my friends are all into oldie music as well... Personally, the only pre-90s band (in the sense of a "band", not a composer or anything) that doesn't sound like trash to me is Kraftwerk (http://www.kraftwerk.de), and you cant seriously call them an old band... they'll be ultra modern forever.
It's probably because I absolutely love listening to music that is produced by technology. I know it sounds odd... but there's something about going to a rave high on new drugs developed by new technologies completely loosing myself in music that is produced purely by computers and new technology. It's odd... But probably exactly the same as smoking pot and listening to all that 60s and 70s crap (excluding Kraftwerk again, of course).

I love piano by itself, however. I really like that...

for me, personally, it will (at this moment) have to be

Nevermore
Amon Amarth
Dark Tranquility

Nevermore... because they have proper singing mixed in with some good hardcore music at times. I, Voyager anybody? How about Narcosynthesis, I am Dog, Deconstruction, The Heart Collector (rambles on)...
Amon Amarth... because they are just so damned good. Death Metal with a Nordic stance... its been done before, admittedly, but they manage to do it well. I have all of their albums and yes I do have "Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds" :P
Dark Tranquility... like Amon Amarth, they do have their own unique sounds, helped out by vocalist Mikael Stanne, of course :p Damage Done is a damn fine album, as is Character.

I have said my fill :D

At the top, for me, is the Decemberists. Their music is very smart; you have to use a dictionary sometimes. ;) Their music is kind of a mix between progressive rock, folk, and oldies tunes - which I love. The singer's voice is excellent as well.

Modest Mouse is next. I love their songs - they express deep, heartfelt thoughts and feelings, many of which I sympathize with. The singer's voice is melodic and harsh at the same time, and expresses sadness, depression or anger very well. I also love what they do with the guitar.

Finally, Rage Against the Machine. Tom Morello is amazing on the guitar, and de la Rocha is a true poet with a wonderful voice. But more than that, their music makes me angry. It makes me want to act. To get out there and fucking do something. It's real activist music, and I love it.

The Sex Pistols. I really shouldn't have to say anything about this band, but I will. The first and the best. Their sets were fast and outrageous, loose and very entertaining. Quite possibly the only band that didn't (and still doesn't) give a shit about rehearsing, nor what people think about them.

The Ramones. They were fast, energetic, and easy on the ears. The speed of their live shows was amazing (18 songs in 20 minutes!), and they influenced literally hundreds of bands.

Husker Du. They're not entirely well-known, but they should have been. Bob Mould wrote deep, insightful lyrics, and he had one hell of a guitar sound (he was one of the people who helped start the "Alternative" guitar sound; multi-layered guitar tracks with lots of reverb). Many say that their "Zen Arcade" album is their best, but it's really their final double-album, "Warehouse: Songs and Stories". It's an album that everyone should hear.

I've heard that they played slower on their albums than they did when playing live because their studio's metronome only went up to 208 bpm, or something of the sort. It might be an apocryphal story, but it's still cool.

I always heard that they just liked to play slower in the studio, and that they played so fast at their shows because of the energy. Either way, the speed of their live sets was still incredible. Blitzkrieg Bop in 1:18!

1) Nirvana

Nirvana has a bunch of songs, many more than are on their albumns (although many of them were released on the box set.) The only original song they did which isn't at least good is "Aero Zeppelin" and I'm not sure why I don't like it. The reason I like Nirvana is because they appeal to me on a personal level. The lyrics don't always go together to form a coherent song, unless you overanalyze them, so I tend to like individual lines from their songs best.

2) The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins also have a bunch of songs, even more than Nirvana. They're not as consisently good as Nirvana, but the sheer volume of good songs more than makes up for it. They also have their share of fantastic songs.

3) Local H

Local H is a relatively new band (debuted in '95) with five albums under their belt. Those five albums are some of the best music I've ever heard. If they release five more albums that are as good as the ones they already have, they could eventually replace my top two favorite bands, as the top two are no longer making music, and therefore have a finite amount of music to listen to.

I could name a bunch more, but the thread specified three, so there you go.

Smashing Pumpkins- Billy Corgan is an amazing songwriter and I love space rock

The Mars Volta- Trippy Neo-psychedelia. First album is about a guy who tries to commit suicide with morphine but ends up in some crazy dream world. Their new album has a bit of a latin salsa feel to it.

Radiohead- Probably one of the greatest bands of the 90s, and still amazing.

I very seriously doubt that it's true. People started trying to "compete" with the Pistols for being the first, which is absolutely ridiculous. And then that whole Richard Hell thing... My god...

I mean, big fucking deal. You have the same problems and ideals, so what's the big stink if somebody started a band before you did? And magazines like 'Punk' didn't (and continue to not) help matters much, with their subliminal "guidelines" for what Punk Rock should be.

Nope, can't say I've ever seen them in concert, unless they're opening for a band that's actually good. The band they're opening for would have to be really good for me to sit through Korn, though.

Incidentally, I do have to commend you for liking Marilyn Manson, but that's besides the point.

Well, 'relatively obscure' might have been a better term...and whether or not Marillion is onscure mostly depends on your age I guess (although most people know the horrendous thing that is 'Kayleigh').

And where does Lacuna Coil get a lot of air time? The US? I envy you then...any opportunity to see Ms. Scabbia is a good thing indeed...here in the Netherlands we only ever see them occasionally on MTV's monday-night 'metal' show...

Shame you only get to name three bands by the way...would love to have added The Mars Volta (can't wait to see them live this summer) and Ayreon (the proof that at least some decent music comes from Holland) to my list as well...

Always good to find another Ayreon fan...

For those who don't know the music and enjoy good metal, check out the official site www.ayreon.com for loads of samples (I have to plug this since one of my best friends is the webmaster ;) )

I'm seeing Mars Volta at Rock Werchter in Belgium...along with Rammstein, Nine Inch Nails, New Order, Garbage, Green Day, REM and Tom McRae...the kind of line-up that's almost too good to be true (for me at least)

A small question for the US Rammstein fans: how many of you actually know what the lyrics mean? I in no way mean this as an offensive question, I simply recall that when I translated the lyrics for my american ex-girlfriend she almost couldn't believe that this was what she'd been listening to all this time :D

I took German for 5 years, so while I don't know all of the words, I know many of them. I was surprised that they were using "hast" as "hate" in "Du Hast", though.

Pink Floyd: how could you not like it? Dark Side of the Moon is an absolute classic, and so is The Wall. I'm really surprised that no one else has mentioned it in this thread (at least, that I noticed).

Dream Theater - thought-provoking lyrics, excellent song-writing ability, and amazing technical proficiency. Plus, they wrote A Change in Seasons, which is quite possibly the best song I've ever heard.

and finally,

Queensryche. Operation: Mindcrime, anyone? For that album alone it will probably be my favorite band of all time.

I also love Iron Maiden and Metallica, but they didn't *quite* make it to this list (close - those two plus the three above probably make up my top five)

If you like the lineup, why don't you go to the festival? There are still plenty of tickets (for the moment) and with Ryanair flying to Belgium from the UK is pretty cheap...
You can check www.rockwerchter.be for more info on the current lineup of all 4 days (more bands may still be confirmed)

Yeah, go on, McCarthy, Blonde Redhead, and Bjork.

If I can't have Bjork as a band, as such, I don't know what I'd go for. The Manic Street Preachers cutting off somewhere in the middle of Everything Must Go (yeah, I'm one of those), or Melt Banana, or Wolfhounds, or this could go on forever and I shan't decide. It'd end up with me talking about Catatonia or the Detroit Cobras, and we none of us need that.

Yay, music post, me love music!

Fav bands...This was a hard one, naturally for me, Sum 41 would be on the list, but the others were hard to choose...

Sum 41
Rise Against
Guns & Roses (kinda outta place with the other two :D)

Sum 41-My ultimate favorite. Love their albums All Killer No Filler, Chuck, and Does This Look Infected, might like the others if I got a chance to listen to them. All Killer No Filler was a fun punk rock cd, 'Fat Lip' 'Motivation' 'Heart Attack' kicked ass. In Chuck, that cd had some more meaningful lyrics and some seriously kicking guitar. Songs 'No Reason' 'The Bitter End' 'Open Your Eyes' and 'I'm not the one' rocked, and the last song of the cd, '88' had some awesome guitar. The album Does This Look Infected was a mix between fun punk and 'serious'. 'Still Waiting' 'Makes No Difference' 'Over My Head(Better off Dead)' were awesomely kickness.

Rise Against-I first found this band watchin Fuse when the music video for 'Give It All' came up. That song was awesome, so was the music video...But After that I went to a borders and checked out their album 'Siren Song Of The Counter Culture' and soon bought. That album rocks with actual meaning. Rise Against is awesome.

Guns & Roses-Just like Sum 41, I can't seem to leave this band out of my 'favs list'. Guns & Roses is awesome. 'Sweet Child Of Mine' 'Paradise City' 'Welcome To The Jungle' all rock, all are great. Guns & Roses is one kickin band.

Rage Against the Machine is, I feel obligated to reiterate, awesome. They r0xx0rz my revolutionary b0xx0rz. They're about more than communism and socialism. People of the Sun, anyone?

I actually dig The Offspring a bit. A few of their tracks I can get into.

Melt Banana is great! But if you want funny, listen to Gravy Train. Heh. Or They Might Be Giants. Or William Shatner! "Has Been" is a great track!

As to the Led Zep comment, Led Zeppelin is a great country/folk band, and appeals to nearly everyone, crossing genre boundaries when it comes to fans. Don't be disheartened if someone likes Led Zeppelin but also likes bands you consider shite.

The Microphones are awesome. So's Mirah. I loves mah Indie Rock.

On the more popular side of things, might I suggest Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and the Cardigans?

1. Rage Against the Machine
2. AC/DC
3. (Tie) The Tragically Hip, The Hives, Alexisonfire. The Hip are incredible live, i've never seen a concert like it. The Hives proves downloading can be good, as, I didn't like these guys till I accidentially downloaded one of their songs. Alexisonfire are crazy live and everything i've heard by them is awesome.

I bet no one here knows all three!
Blues Traveler; G. Love and Special Sauce; Cake (both kinds)

Never heard of G. Love and Special sause, but I do love Cake! Blues Traveler is ok too.
