"I Started a joke" By the BeeGee's.

Though my favorite version of the song was sang by 'No Hope', an Australian band. That guy, his voice was so damn powerful, when he went to the chorus I had teary eyes.

NIN or Johny Cash song-Hurt(?)

I'm not sure if you're asking for clarification about the title, artist, or something else, but as it was going to be my choice, I will clear it all up :p

Hurt, originally by Nine Inch Nails, covered by Johnny Cash just a few months before his death.

Now, I love Johnny Cash even at the worst of times, but my God in heaven, the song is one of the saddest - and most beautiful - I have ever heard. The song itself is powerful enough, but if you watch the video as well, you'll be in tears. There is so much emotion there it's not real...

Are any of the Counting Crows songs actually sad, or do they just sound like they should be?

Anna Lisa - The saddest song I have ever heard, sung by a band that ironically, should sing really happy songs.

Yes, I had childish tastes in music.

Anything by Leonard Cohen.
By that I mean anything, not the song 'Anything', which as far as I know he's never written or sung a song with that title.
I've always thought 'It's Gonna Be (Alright)' by Ween is a pretty sad song

How is that sad?
go listen carefully, especially to the second verse. It may not strike you at first, but it has some sad underpinnings in it. Either that or I'm reading waaay to deep into it.

Ohh, and Gary Jules Mad World.

Maybe these aren't the saddest of all time, but they're pretty sad for pop/rock songs. Though for any of the saddest, go for some opera or classical. They can be pretty depressing.

Gary's Jules's cover of Mad World. The Tears for Fears original version is disturbingly upbeat.

I agree with Time of Your Life by Green Day. Course, I might be sentimental because it was sung at my graduation.

And Clementine is sad. When I was a kid I always had to fast forward through it on a tape.

I think the saddest song of today is "My Immortal" by Evanescence but one of my all-time saddest songs is "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers.

I can play Gary Jules version of "Mad World" on the piano. It is pretty sad, but the piano part is strangely reminiscent of Circus Music. Maybe it's lost its origional emotional impact to me, but I find it less sad, and more informative. For example, in the line "I find it kind of funny; I find it kind of sad. The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had." it seems to me that he is not saying that he is some sort of freaky guy who wants to die, but that the only emotion powerful enough to knock him loose of his monotonous life is the fear of death in his dreams; that the world is so emotionless that any emotion that he feels can be concieved as pleasurable or exciting.

Unchained Melody is more of a love song, but the only reason I relate it to unhappyness (instead of longing) is because of its placement in the movie "Ghost"

My vote would have to be for "Little Boy Blue." ( At least I think that was the title. ) It was a song about a father who was too involved in business affairs and the minutia of life to spend time with his son when the boy was little, then realizes that his son is just like him when he's grown and has no time to spend with his dad.

I'm going to have to say "The Metro" by Berlin. Old 80's song also covered by System of a Down and Bella Morte (I'm going to have to say I like the Bella Morte version best). The lyrics are very powerful.

I have to go for Somewhere out there from the American tale movie.

It was the favorite song of a 3 year old boy in the city I used to live in. He was raped and murdered and his parents published the words of that song in his funeral notice. I can't hear it now, without thinking of that little boy, and what happened to him.

Kansas - 'Dust in the Wind'

And I have to disagree with those saying 'Hurt' is the saddest song ever. I'm a huge NIN fan and 'Hurt' has got to be my favourite song of all time. But I don't think it's actually sad in the way I feel like crying. To me the feeling of the song is one of being resigned and of regret of not being able to change the way things went.

only two more days
until your birthday
yesterday was mine
youll be turning five
i know what its like
growing up without
your father in your life.

so i pretend
im doing all i can
and hope someday youll find it in your heart
to understand
why im not around
and forgive me for not being in your life.

i remember waiting for you to go.
i remember waiting for you to call.
i remember waiting there to find nothing at all.
i remember waiting for you to come ( waiting for you to come )
remember waiting for you to call (waiting for you to call )
waiting there to find nothing at all.

maybe someday
youll really get to know me
not just from letters wrote to you
i pray i get the chance
to make it up to you
weve got a lot of catching up to do.

so i pretend
im doing all i can
and hope someday you’ll find it in your heart
to understand
why im not around
and forgive me for not being in your life.

i remember waiting for you to go.
i remember waiting for you to call.
i remember waiting there to find nothing at all.
i remember waiting for you to come ( waiting for you to come )
remember waiting for you to call (waiting for you to call )
waiting there to find nothing at all.

i remember waiting for you to come ( waiting for you to come )
waiting for you to call
i remember (waiting for you)

forgive me.
im so sorry.
i will make it up to you.
