Seriously. I'm rather tired of these "Why does the world hate america" threads.

I don't give a shit and my country's right next to yours. The only things that are really issues are stupid economic crap. I don't even give a shit if you all think we live in igloos and drive dogsleds everywhere so long as you mind your own business and don't hassle our polticians on gay marriage and the legal status of drugs in our own damn country.

I don't give a shit. The U.S. is a nice enough place to visit, I don't think I'd want to live there, I don't hate the place or the people, you could do a better job picking leaders, but hey I guess given the options you had there wasn't much you could do, really. I just really don't care so long as you don't try putting pressure on the people that I elected to represent me.

Because, my friend, the US will not always be top dog. Sooner or later, it will be weaker than others. Then perhaps it will be seen why diplomacy and humbleness are more important than arrogance, strength and intimidation.

I couldn't agree more on the matter, and I'm really getting pissed at the way our "leaders" are abusing their power.

Dont complain, thats the world of imperialism and greed you all choose with every new vote.... because free market is soooooo goood. >_>

Making the world a better place, even with pressure, is not that bad. BUT
Americas politicians are only making the world a better place for corporations and no one else

Many USians assume the world gives a shit because on places like this forum we see threads with titles like "Genocide in America?" or "Europe vrs. US". It tends to makes us think that yes, some people in the world give a shit about the US.
Why do you choose to ignore the existence of those threads? If you don't care that's all well and good but a lot of other people do, especially those swarming Canadians. (Don't mess with'em, that's my advice.)

But I guess I don't count because I'm going to be a Canadian as soon as I possibly can! I think you make an excellent point though, everyday people who make such a big hoopla over which country is better is really wasting their time anyway. Their opinion isn't really going to change much!

America is a fun place to live and I'm sure I'll feel the same way about Canada as soon as I'm able too live there! :)

We assume the world cares how our government acts because the world does care. At any given time, nations are rejecting and protesting our way of governance and policies, and in other places adopting them; some nation is always striving to be more like the U.S., while others rise to power by opposing some policy or other that we have in place.

Look at the former Soviet Republics. Where did they get their system of criminal and civil justice, most of them? From the State of New York, largely. Not that we didn't heavily advocate it, but still. Most of their tort law comes stright from New York under Cordoza.

The many Americans who "assume the world gives a shit" have probably never been out of the country in their lives. Many of them live in the south, and many of them more then likely voted for Bush. Do some people in the World actually give a shit? Yes. I do; I have to. I've been living in the US since I was born, and I've hated every second of it since I've been old enough to think for myself.

Nationalism is at work here. It's always been around, and it will always affect the world. Americans are very nationalistic, they think they're better then everybody else. I can't go a day without hearing someone say "be thankfull for what you have, in a third world country... blah blah blah." Honestly? I would rather live in the poorest country in the world, be plagued by disease and famine, then have myself associated with Americans.

What does the future hold for me? Well, as soon as I graduate college and raise enough money I'm moving straight to Sweden or Germany. From then on will I give a shit what the US does? No. They could all turn into canabalistic mutant half-cat-half human hippies and kill each other with staple guns for all I'd care. To answer your question, "Why do americans assume the world gives a shit", is the same reason why little punks cause trouble. The same reason why emotional kids try to kill themselves.

The funny thing is, all these countries are(or were) bitching about the US not going through diplomatic channels, yet our invasion of Iraq is becoming a massive success because we finaly just said "enough is enough" and cleared out Saddam. Now even the Sunnis are coming around in mass and denounceing the terrorists in Iraq.

And you know what, when we are not the top dog, we probably will use diplomacy more, but when anyone else is the top dog, they will probably use diplomacy less when it serves their interests. Look at your own nation's history before ragging on ours and getting all high and mighty.

I personally love this thread. It's starts with i don't care about America but it then slowly turns into hey can yor government stop pressuring mine. I'm studying abroad in europe right now and i study politics, and i'll tell you this much. Everyone cares about what America does because were top dog. If we attack Iraq it affects urope. If our economy slumbs every one elses economy has a problem. If we don't sign a treaty it fails. example ICC, Land mines ect. So all of you who do not think other countries care are wrong everyone cares. It's not if they like or don't like us it's the fact that when we make a decision it can effect the world. And this is not just Bush's fault you would like to put this all on him because he is now but this is failed foriegn policy for decades. And the rift with europe is not a new one. So if you think no one caes think of the reaction to the War in Iraq everyone took notice.

Those suck too, but it seems that each one of those spawns at least two "why does the world hate us" threads even though many of the "america sucks" threads seem to be started by americans.

For instance, there are a number of threats being sent to canadian mps over the gay marriage issue and pressure from american politicians (most notably Bush's threat to close down the border) is what got marijuana recriminalized... even though many states have more leniant policies than what was being suggested here.
