Behind the Name

Ubiqtorate

Hey, so how did you guys pick your names? There are some pretty cool ones in here, and I wanted to know the stories behind them.

I'll start: My name comes from a word author Tim Zahn coined "ubiqtorate" It comes from the word ubiquitous, which is similar in meaning to omnipresent.
But I know someone out there has a better story . . .
Potaria
01-04-2005, 22:58
Well, this came from one of my aliases, Potatish. I altered it to make a worthy name for a nation.
The Internet Tough Guy
01-04-2005, 23:00
I was in an online poker tournament, and one of the players was mouthing off to all of the other players. One of the other players told him he should change his name to "Internet Tough Guy." I got a chuckle out of it and figured I should use it.
Holy Sheep
01-04-2005, 23:01
I just saw the word Theocracy, and was like, Holy.... Sheep.
Vetalia
01-04-2005, 23:01
Well, Vetalia came from a character in a story I wrote.

Goldaria-Gold

New Festizio- Family Guy

Only read this if you are a Communist who goes after Neo Nazi regions: (white text obviously)

The Reborn Reich (my plant nation in Aryanised Europe)- Tried to create an amateur "15yr old Neo Nazi loser" look, with a stupid, generalized slogan, german flag, and reichsmark currency. Check it out and tell me if it looks convincingly "amateurish".
Jordaxia
01-04-2005, 23:01
And again.... for everyones knowledge :D

my middle name: Jordan (the first name on my birth certificate is Michael at the moment... so heheh.)
Everything sounds cooler with an X.
Jordax. Someone who comes from Jordax, Jordaxian (with the X pronounced as Z.) Jordaxia sounds better than Jordax, so I stick with that.
Roxacola
01-04-2005, 23:01
I started leaving odd messages in a friends message book under the name Roxy. I added -acola out of fond remembrance to StarTropics for NES.
Drunk commies reborn
01-04-2005, 23:03
My parents were drunk at a communist party rally when I was concieved.
Franziskonia
01-04-2005, 23:04
I'm a self-involved bitch, and as Queen of my country, it really was the right thing to do. I shortly thought of Insane Basia, because InsaneBase is my internet nickname, comming from one of the best Buffy quotes ever, but didn't take it.

Roach-Busters
01-04-2005, 23:05
I hate cockroaches, and as a youth I had a club called Roach-Busters.
Occidio Multus
01-04-2005, 23:05

No, actually before Drunk Commies got deleted I was using a flag that consisted of Lenin raising a shot glass in a toast with the caption "Shots for the Masses!". The flag gave me the idea for the name.
Straughn
01-04-2005, 23:24
Well, i posted before ....
The name is the name of a (friend) of mine who is, after multiple cranial injuries and near death, apparently coming along much better than anyone anticipated. Currently the key witness in an attempted manslaughter/murder case, obviously.
(The Theocracy of Straughn)
Weird how much comas and like states have come up in the past few months. Disturbing.
Niccolo Medici
01-04-2005, 23:25
Mine's pretty obvious, no?

Niccolo - First name of the author of "The Prince".

Medici - Family name of the guy Niccolo wrote it for.

I came up with it after struggling with name ideas for a few minutes. It rolls off the tounge well, so I stuck with it. I'm amazed it worked as well as it did. I've thought about using it as a pen name or something.
North Island
01-04-2005, 23:29
My name, North Island, means just that, North Island. I got the idea from my own nation that is located in the far north and is an island.
I only later found out that there is an island in New Zealand that also has that name. Many people think i'm from New Zealand here.

Your posts don't seem terribly Machievellian in nature . . .
Silly Sharks
01-04-2005, 23:34
I wanted to be Silly Hats.
But I couldn't.
Zombie Lagoon
01-04-2005, 23:39
Well. My names pretty boring so ill just tell you it all again. That's if you haven't read it already. Zombie Lagoon, remember it....
Zwange

When I was first joining I couldn't think of anything, so I just made it up. But all my puppets have strange names because I was trying to amuse myself.

If you understand "Machievellian" to mean underhanded and evil...not so much ;).

If you read the entirety of his works, you'll understand that he had a very pragmatic view on power, but the very core of his belief system is that the government should be a positive force overall.

I share this view; power can be used ruthlessly and well, crimes can be commited for the good of the state and its people. Taken ruthlessly, ruled wisely. Similar in nature to Sun-Tzu's writings on war, war is terrible but must be studied well, better to preserve than destory, better to win without fighting. Beyond those trite words lay powerful conceptual tools.

Besides that, The prince was the first political science book I ever read for fun, way back in childhood. It had a profound effect on me, and I still look back on it as one of the best books I have ever read on the subject.
Peechland
01-04-2005, 23:42
well when I was a newb, I thought my nation name should be something "land" with the whole nation theme and all, and since I live in Georgia, which is known as "The Peach State", I picked Peachland. When I tried to enter the name...it wouldnt take it, so I had to spell it Peechland.

i wish we had a peach smilie *goes to see Haken about a custom smiley*

I'm known for my bad spelling, so i thought what the hell' i'll deliberately spell my name wrong
Unistate
01-04-2005, 23:53
Because I was trying to come up with an alternative to 'OneState' or simply 'The State', in the vein of 1984 and Brave New World. UniState come to mind; though it bears a resemblance to United States, that's neither here nor there. (Though then I went and called it 'The United States of UniState', just to shake things up :p)

Machievelli is right about at least one thing- power is amoral. If I were power-hungry, I'd use the prince as a how to guide. Another good book is the 48 Laws of Power.

31
01-04-2005, 23:56
Every name I typed in was refuse for about ten minutes. Out of frustration I typed 31 and it gave it to me. Then later during my one aborted attempt troll for fun and profit I typed Figleaf and it gave it to me right away. Now I can't get rid of that damn Figleaf nation! It always pops up before my real country. Forever punished for one little mistake. . .
Kryozerkia
01-04-2005, 23:58
I was bored.

I was sitting at a computer at school.

I decided to play, and hence Kryozerkia was born. I wanted to call my nation Kutou, but it was taken.

I just started typing, and I wound up with Kryozerkia.

My others...

Kutou-koku, because I wanted a country called Kutou to run it like a tyrannical dictatorship.

Farflorin is one of my other faves. I wanted to call another nation of mine Florin, but it was sadly taken, and so, I shoved the word Far in front of Florin. (For those of you who don't know, read The Princess Bride).

you probably have your settings set to "sign in automatically" on the Figlaf nation....check and see-that might be why it pops up before your main nation. I had that set accidentally on my legless peeches name and it kept popping up first.
Random Kingdom
02-04-2005, 00:04
I live in the United Kingdom, and I'm a pretty random guy anyway, and other nation names I tried with random in it failed, so it just fell together.

My puppets, Geckratonia and Sweatshoponia (the latter is most likely nonexistant now) got their names because of the following:

Geckratonia - populated by mutant geckos. Gecko > Geckratonia.

Sweatshoponia - it was originally my right-wing nation, so life in it was like a permanent sweatshop, and the suffix 'onia' made it sound more like a nation name.

I also used to have a puppet called OPN Missionaries, an advertiser for an old region of mine, the Oppressive Puppets' Network. Obvious.
Falastur
02-04-2005, 00:05
I basically happened across this (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/t/tarannon.html) in the appendices while reading LoTR. Since then, I have gone by the pseudonym of Tarciryan Falastur on the internet (check the link on the right to Tarciryan if you are that bothered).
Sesquipedalianism
02-04-2005, 00:10
i noticed that everyone was using reaLY long words for their names, and sesquipedalianism is made of latin roots and translates to "the tendency to use foot-and-a-half long words" but i didnt make it up. its in the dictionary.
Wild Hand Motions
02-04-2005, 00:14
I was in Academic Decathlon at the time, and one of the events is speech, another is interview. During both, I make extremely wild and unpredictable hand motions, which my former teammates thought amusing beyond all telling. And at the time, all of us played NS, so I decided to make a name they'd recognize.

As for my other nation, Leather Ocelots...well. My nickname is ocelot, because ocelots are tiny cats that will eat your face if you make them mad. Rather like me. :p And leather is just because everything is more spiffy if you add Leather to it.
Cannot think of a name
02-04-2005, 00:29
I was following links and honestly didn't think I would spend enough time here for my name to matter, so I gave up and decided to be honest about it.

It gave me the opportunity to have this as a flag-

So it's not all bad...

Gartref is my real name. It is Welsh for home.
Boonytopia
02-04-2005, 01:13
Named after legendary Aussie cricketer, David Boon. Holder of the beer drinking record on the Melbourne-London flight. The topia ending is because I imagine my country would be a beer drinking, cricket loving utopia if Boony was in charge.
Benokraitis
02-04-2005, 01:31
Well, everyone seems to have put effort into choosing their names. I just had a sociology text book on my desk and one of the author's last name was Benokraitis. I thought it had a nice ring to it...although I am sure I could have come up with something better if I really thought about it.

Hey! Another AcaDeca veteran! Me too!

Anywho, mine is from utter lack of creativity. My name is Robb, so it came naturally.
